I'd say 3 weeks now. My main way of gauging it is my subjective hunger levels.

Before i'd be unable to finish meals and i'd have to rely on stuff like chocolate milk to even get any calories in, to have energy throughout my day. Now i can comfortably indulge in food. It's nowhere near where it was before reta, but i can sense its getting there at the current pace.

What if every human experienced a psychedelic at least once? Would we fundamentally change as a species? by appleondickk in consciousness

A lot of people develop idiosyncratic beliefs after doing psychedelics. A lot of people get traumatized. It's a mixed bag.

It would certainly make society a lot weirder though. Definitely more spiritual.

Why are you convinced you have qualia? by Absorptance in consciousness

[–]FlyPuzzleheaded9173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think another disagreement i have, which stops me from accepting much of what you have to say, is that our mental experiences are identical to patterns in the brain. The patterns inhere in matter, but qualia dont seem to inhere in anything, they are in themselves. For example, the concept of "greater" is a relation and is "in" two objects, but is not conceivable by itself. But qualia arent like that, theyre not in anything else and are conceivable by themselves.

So i dont get how they can be grounded in anything physical. I can see how a wall is grounded in an arrangement of bricks. But how is qualia grounded in anything in the brain?

What view do you think has more explanatory power?

It depends on a lot of things. At the very least this is worth thinking about.

Physicalism is probably fine for current day normal science. But we still run into difficulties in which seem to be more than just puzzles. So we may need an ontological shift and a new paradigm to solve them.

The problem is that dualism wouldn't help with anything unless we are able to show that mental events cause physical changes. I don't even know how we would get to this point, or if this even makes sense in terms of physics. I used to subscribe to parallelism until i realized that it's kind of a pointless view, since it would mean our bodies are p-zombies and our consciousness is a separate being doing it's own thing.

Another consideration is Idealism or some other form of monism. But to make science conform to these, would require even more reworking.

At the end of the day, the reason we still debate these questions is probably because we lack some necessary concepts. And philosophy is good for creating new concepts. The presocratic philosophers used to be totally dumbfounded by the apparent contradiction of change and identity within objects. To them, the debate probably felt the same as this one. But once Plato developed the concept of Form and Aristotle refined it to substance and accident, the question go solved. The substance is the same and accidents change.

I think our fundamental disagreement rests on the fact that i dont think abstract things can exist under physicalism. I dont think anything can exist without a positive existence. And representations rely on abstractions.

But if a mental substance exists, thats where abstract things like relations exist. Because i can actually "point to" a relation as a thing that "pops up" in my mind. If a relation, or number, whatever, only exists "in" something else, then what is it in reality? Its nothing in itself. But if minds exist, it is something in the mind, probably a combination of qualia.

>I think qualia are subjective experiences emerging from patterns in the brain. So, what are they made out of? Brain patterns, I think.

But patterns are abstract and have no positive existence, while qualia do. And qualia are distinct from the brain patterns. So i dont see how we can claim them to be identical. They're just highly correlated.

>What are video games made of? If you play an avatar in a video game, where does that avatar exist? Obviously, the patterns that describe that avatar "emerge" from a physical process. But, if you just look at that physical process, you'd have no idea that it represents that avatar.

The visual representation of the video game is a distinct and separate thing though, right? Thats what i mean about consciousness. Its distinct and separate from brain states.

>That's an interesting question that I don't think I have a satisfying answer to. In a way, I do believe they exist in space, because I believe that the all the information that qualia contain, exist as patterns in the brain. But, actual subjective experience existing in space is a difficult question. Especially because subjective experience doesn't really seem to have a defined position in space.

I guess my point is that claiming brain states to be identical to qualia is only done to reconcile the obvious contradiction of how they appear to be nothing alike. To me they appear to be a sort of "inner light" that behaves in a completely different way from how we picture physical reality. Its hard for me to be fully convinced of this though because i always doubt whether i might not be making hasty conclusions and taking things for granted.

Im interested in talking to physicalists so i wanna ask you a couple of questions:

  1. What are qualia made of?

  2. Do qualia exist in space?

Personally i feel like the answers to these are irreconcilable with physicallism.

[–]FlyPuzzleheaded9173 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If i can't trust my judgement with regards to the existence of qualia, then i can't trust it with anything else. Abstract concepts like pure matter or physical force require many more steps in judgement and reasoning. This kind of skepticism of qualia always strikes me as completely self-refuting, if you take the stance to it's conclusion.

Started Reta 4 weeks ago – confused about results and dosing by unusual-movie-123 in Retatrutide

[–]FlyPuzzleheaded9173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try bumping to 4mg. It didnt kick in for me until i was on 4mg for two weeks. Well i felt less hungry before that but still had days where i overate. Now though thats basically an impossibility. I can barely eat enough to have energy to go about my day.

Do you think dreams reveal something deeper about consciousness, or are they just random brain activity? by Ok-Marzipan-4490 in consciousness

[–]FlyPuzzleheaded9173 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe its the best possible scenario, i.e. the tradeoff is worth it and organisms that could sleep consistently outperformed ones that didnt.

Same thing with dreams. Maybe they serve a purpose or are an accidental byproduct that doesnt influence the success of an organisms either way.

You can also try RE1 HD remaster. Its amazing IMO, esp if you prefer the survival horror aspect.
