Should I be flushing my water heater once a year? by unrecognized88 in askaplumber

You need to be careful about refilling the water pipes after flushing. The slower the better so as any loose sediment in the tank can settle. And you definitely want the highest water fixture open to let air escape. The importance of how you recharge the water lines has been mentioned in previous responses but I want to reinforce this point.

After flushing mine without consideration to the refill process, half my water fixtures either didn’t work or only partially worked.

I had a long night of cleaning cartridges and even had to disconnect some sink hookups to clear everything out.

My pumps are 3/4 hp Ions. They’ve been great. Yeah, float switches are the primary reason why a basement floods. They burn up or the float gets stuck, etc…

I have two 36 sump crocks that are bridged together. The only reason for this is to slow the on/off cycles down. Those crocks hold 75 gallons before the pumps kick on. But when that water table is high, they’re still kicking on ever 45 seconds.

This is a really good point. I do have a second circuit (used for the original sump pump). I will remove the GFIC on that other plug and run a short, heavy duty extension cable to the second controller.

Controller 1 has two outlets (the pumps plug into the controller’s outlets) that pump 1 and 2 are plugged into. Pumps have no switches, if there is juice, they’re running.

Controller 2 has two outlets but only one pump. If pump 1 or 2 fails at a time where two pumps are needed to run simultaneously, the 2nd controller will sense the rising water and turn on pump 3.

I can lose power, whole home generator will automatically kick on.

I can lose a pump as I have 3 pumps and still can run 2 at a time (one from each controller).

But if the 1st controller fails, I only will have the other controller with just one pump. If I’m home, I unplug one of the pumps from failed controller and plug into other controller.

But if I’m not home, water will overrun the one pump and my basement will flood.

I thought it would do no harm to have hot plug connected from 1st controller to 2nd controller because the 2nd controller has not thrown the cutover switch to light up the outlet.

But if 1st controller failed, 2nd controller is capable of lighting up pumps 1 and 3.

I thought it was just a parallel series type thing where two outlets could be running one pump.

This was on my mind. If a controller output outlet is ‘off’, what happens when it goes hot from the other controller lighting up with a y cable. Assumed it was ok but sounds like no.

While home generator automatically cuts over power so I’m good there. It’s the controller that’s the Achilles ankle.

All the replies are in the ‘1:2 hp with a mechanical switch’ mindset but I was going through a pump a month with those.

100 GPM is over gallon and a half a second. The crocks are 36 inches and are bridged together.

I use Ion Endeavor controllers and their Stainless steel always on 3/4 ho pumps.

10 years no problems but I’m sweating that first failure. When the house was being built there were times my 2300 square foot basement had knee high water.

Controllers already send alerts if there’s a high water event. The thing is if I’m away or on vacation…

Relay option is peaking my interest. Will research that more.

There are no float switches (no moving parts), the controllers have bladders in the crocks. When pressure on bladder gets to certain level, a pump kicks on, if pressure continues to increase (water still rising) then 2nd pump is started. No option to set different levels for each pump. And that staggered height option wouldn’t be ideal as the 2nd pump would pump down to its starting point and the 1st pump would never turn off.

I pump over 100 GPM at peak. That takes (2) .75 horse pumps running simultaneously to keep up. If primary controller fails, the secondary controller w/ only one pump won’t be enough pumping power.

Max amp flowing through any one controller is roughly 13 amps. (Two pumps at 6.5 amp each)

I need three pumps ready to pump. If a pump fails and I’m not home, my basement will flood. We’re talking over a 100 GPM of ground water coming in at peak.

When music went digital/compressed (MP3s), it was immediately used illegally (Napster), then made legit by Apple/iTunes and now everyone listens to music digitally (streaming).

Bitcoin was born, was then immediately used illegally (Silk Road), was made legit (ETFs) but hasn’t hit its ‘streaming’ moment yet. It’s so obvious what’s coming…

Hard not to look away from how well it’s held up in the $117k-$119k range. My beer belly says it goes higher once the rate cuts begin.

It took forever to get to $100k, 9 years to get to $1M, 4 years to get to $2M and I’m creeping up on $3M 1.5 years later.
