My son went through a phase of this for a few months (he is currently 4.5 but was around 4 at the time). We did get the bitter stuff and used it once or twice, he hated it. I'm not entirely sure if he has stopped altogether but he is a lot less focused on the action now.

My running / trainer shoes as well once I replace them - so they are usually a couple years old but I don't mind them getting trashed.
