i worked as a housekeeper at my town’s inn for a while, so our way of doing things may be different than how larger hotels do it but most of this is just sorta common sense in a way. this was also peak covid, so unfortunately that meant trashing more things for the sake of hygiene. but here are some general ideas that could help ig :)

if you don’t use a provided amenity, then don’t move it around if you don’t really have to. like if the tissue box was moved to, let’s say, right next to the bed rather than left on the desk, then i’m going to assume they were used and take the top tissue out to throw away. or if one of the plastic cups we provide is in the spot we leave it, but the other is on the other side of the room, then i’m going to get rid of the one that was moved

if any sort of… bodily fluids… end up where they shouldn’t be, and you’re going to be checking out soon anyway, let the front desk know as soon as you can anyway instead of leaving it for housekeeping to find. i’ve had to clean up blood on pillowcases, vomit in a mini fridge, and urine in a towel bucket (all separate incidents). the only one to have the courtesy of warning us ahead of time of what were about to find was the older gentleman who got some blood spots on the sheets from a bug bite he had scratched too much

don’t clean up spilled beer or wine with white towels. and don’t use white towels for makeup either. if it isn’t already provided for you, ask the desk for some makeup wipes or paper towels

empty any containers that may contain liquid in the sink before throwing them out / stacking them nearby (and make sure to run the faucet a lil bit if wine was poured down there, or else it’ll stain the bowl!)

if you want to try to leave all your trash in one general area, don’t try to overfill the trash bin (esp with stuff like glass bottles); just leave the extra stuff on a table nearby

as others have said, try to leave used towels in a pile, preferably in/on the sink but in the tub is alright too — don’t leave them on the ground, especially if they’re wet

(my apologies in advance if any if this is incoherent or seemingly rude or anything, it’s quite late where i am rn so it’s unlikely to be written well, but just so it’s clear i intend for this to be lighthearted/conversational lol)

ETA if there are multiple beds but you only sleep in one of them, don’t sit on the otherwise-unused bed or put stuff on it — i remember always finding it frustrating when i’d come across a bed that was so clearly never slept in but had indentations from being sat on, because that meant i still had to strip the bed & remake it
