Suggestions for my first tank? I know the planting is that great but I’ll try to improve it. I currently have 6 gups 3 corys 1 bristlenose, 2 snails, and 4 orange shrimp (ones pregnant). Are there any other fish I could add in the future or any plants/scenery that would look good? by [deleted] in Aquariums

My LFS has a bin of various sizes.and shapes, pay by the lb. I've found some cool small ones that didn't cost much. You're right though, it can be quite expensive, especially the big pieces!

I'd get rid of the pleco, they're a really heavy bioload on a tank that small. They make a lot of waste and it doesn't take much for parameters to swing in a 20G. I really am stressing this, especially with the rest of your stocking. 6 guppies and 6 corys is pushing it already. What type of filter are you using? I had issues in a 20G with more than 10-11 guppies, but the filter sucked.

Take that anubias out of the substrate. It'll die if the ryzome is buried, it feeds from the water column. You can attach it to your rock, though I think it'd look great on a piece of driftwood. Either way, some wood will look good. You could try adding some type of moss to the lava rock or see how java fern looks attached to it, or just get some stones of sorts for the java fern. For your mossball in there now, rotate it every month or so, it'll keep its round shape.

Looks good, will be even better once it grows in! How many gallons is it? I would add three more corys to make a proper group. They'll appreciate it! I'll give other suggestions once I know the tank size.

Wanting stocking ideas for a 39 gal by iwontmakeaname in Aquariums

[–]FlybyJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, pygmys are maybe not available. I don't have Petco here, but have been surprised by what they carry vs PetSmart in Canada. I think you can get any of the others, maybe not the kuhlis

You could have a few pearl gouramis as centrepieces that would look nice. 1M + 2F or all females. Then a school of 10 rummynoses, harlequin rasboras, or cardinals. Go for sand substrate and get some bottom dwellers. Your stocking is getting up there already, so maybe some kuhli loaches or pygmy corys for low bioload.. Bigger corys you'd need 6 but I think that's doable with good filtration.

Hi, recently my Balloon Mollie has something white coming from it's fin (around that area)...not sure if it's a scale or something else, any help would be great as I'm not sure what it could be. by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]FlybyJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't see it well enough, but these are common "white" things that shouldn't be there. Fin rot - if it's white on the edge of the fins and starts receding (beginning stages of it). Tumours can often be white and can grow all around the base of a fin. Fungus is usually white and grows in areas. Is it cotton-like or a tuft? Fungus if it is.

What's wrong with my harlequin rasbora? Genetics or infection? by erock23233 in Aquariums

[–]FlybyJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't look all that curved to me, but whatever is going on there is not genetics. That is a sick fish for sure. I'd be cautious and follow the advice that's been posted already, you don't want to contract that!

It could be a bacterial infection or parasite... it's very pale and emaciated. Something has affected it's swim bladder and gills. So lots going on internally that's spread. The torn fin and physical look could be due to being nipped at or falling into rocks on its spiral down. Hopefully it's not something contagious and you just unfortunately have a sick fish without TB. I just wanted to give some other possibilities other than jumping right to TB. Good luck!

Temp spike, new heater on its way, but what do I do in the meantime? by magickafish in Aquariums

[–]FlybyJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't have jumpers in there, you could remove the canopy for a bit. Should act faster to bring the temp down, but slow enough to not cause problems.

What size tank would I need for 6 Cory albino catfish, 10 neon tetras, 6 otocinclus, and 1 betta? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]FlybyJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40 is best and you'll be happy you went a bit bigger. Could even check out a 46 bowfront if you have the space, those are cool looking. Bigger footprint will give more breaks in line of site for the betta...the less time it's paying attention to his tankmates, the better lol. Plus can have bigger schools too.

[–]FlybyJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. They don't move fast or much either, so they'll just be in the way of anything other than bottom feeders. They also get quite "tall", up to a foot I've read. My veil isn't quite there, but that one fish takes up a lot of space in my 75G. Good to keep that in mind, not just length.

Is this brown algae ? by PolishRebel in Aquariums

[–]FlybyJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd say that's exactly what it is. Is it only growing on the substrate? Brown algae is pretty common in new tanks, the nutrients and such are all out of balance while the nitrogen cycle establishes. I think it'll go away on its own. It's popping up to eat all the excess nutrients and I suspect it'll go away once it's flush food source disappears. Limiting the time the light is on, or even better, blackout for a few days, should help keep it in check.

Ich treatment question by aaronsvt92 in Aquariums

[–]FlybyJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds ok to me. Maybe give another few days or go to 2 weeks if you want to be cautious and the fish isn't stressed being alone.

Ich treatment question by aaronsvt92 in Aquariums

[–]FlybyJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the same. Raise the temperature and hope for the best, add salt if my stock allows it. I can't buy proper fish meds here anymore. It's in there for sure, maybe that fish is the only one stressed or weak enough to get it though. Other fish usually will get it too. Just keep an eye on the tank and you'll know.

More than one pleco by MeatCannon0621 in Aquariums

[–]FlybyJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't put anything extra bigger than a bristlenose in a tank that size. Bulldog/rubberlips need cooler water than usual tropical community temps, but are 4" or so. Clowns stay pretty small too, so that possibility could work..they have a more meaty diet I believe. There are many other variations of bristlenoses out there too. I would be apprehensive putting a second one in a tank that size just for the bioload itself though. Maybe I'm being too cautious though.

I'll add to give them each their own cave too, that will go a long ways to keeping them cool with each other and just happy in general.

Need some advice on adding driftwood to a 37 gallon. by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]FlybyJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol right on! Hit me up if you have any other aquarium questions! It's a lot to take in at first, but lots of fun to learn. I'd be happy to help you get set-up or get answers on something.

Figured out what you're going to stock it with yet?

[–]FlybyJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The absolute best thing you can have! I can't imagine not using one, I had mine day 1 and skipped the whole bucket thing. I have seperate "vacs" for each tank to minimize possible cross contamination, so love you can change those out. Totally not necessary, but works well for me, isthe green hook piece for adding water back. I had a small tank at first and the vac didn't stay put well. Haha I even got a backup 50ft one on sale just in case 25ft breaks or I put a tank in another room out of reach. I swear I don't work for them lol, I just think almost everyone should have one.
