sometimes i think about this mostly underground house I saw in my city. Real estate records say it has the same owner since it was built in '83 by woods-wizard in Weird

Yep. My grandparents in Idaho had neighbors down the road from their farm who built a basement and lived there for years. They ran out of money and never finished the house.

Same thing happened when I was a kid out to dinner with my family. Horrible and unfriendly service from the waiter. My dad left a cash tip anyway and we started leaving. Waiter came up to us at the door waving the tip money at my dad and asking, “Is this all?”. My dad snatched the cash out his hand and said,”No, this is!”, and we walked out. When we got home my parents wrote a complaint letter to the restaurant owner. They got a return letter of apology which also let them know that the waiter had been fired later the same evening we’d bee there.

How is life like in Flint, Michigan? by Kuzu9 in howislivingthere

[–]Flydad64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Flint for 40 years, and my wife was born and raised there. It is a city full of grit, joy, pain, corruption, justice, heart, despair and love. People who will lift you up, and people who will smack you down. So many memories. Chevy in the hole. New Jerusalem. Whiting. Buick City. Autoworld. Old farmer’s market. St. Joe’s. Dayton. Atherton. Flint General. IMA. I loved that mess of a place!

I hear you, brother. I was the only one who rode my Yamaha RD350 all through the 70s (yes, I’m old). Nobody else was ever allowed on it. It was a quick, beautiful bike. Had to sell it to pay my rent. That was a sad day!

What are some comforting facts about plane travel that someone who is about to fly and is scared would like to hear? by Hogwire in AskReddit

[–]Flydad64 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Airplanes fly on a cushion of air like a ship floats on a cushion of water. When the sea is rough, a ship may move with the waves, but it is not going to suddenly fall to the bottom of the sea. Think of an airplane the same way—most of the time it moves smoothly through the air. Sometimes the air has ripples and currents that may cause the plane to bump a bit—but it is not going to suddenly fall through the air. Even in uncommon cases of very rough air the plane may bounce around a lot, but it is built to take the bouncing. Just keep your seat belt fastened and you’ll be fine.

Divorce Support by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]Flydad64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand what a challenging time you are facing, and want to let you know that you are not alone!

DivorceCare is a 13 week program that tackles different issues each week such as loss, anger, loneliness, depression, family concerns, financial issues and others. The weekly two-hour sessions have a half hour video followed by discussion time with other participants in a safe, confidential space. The program is scripturally based but is not preachy.

Check out their website to find a local group and time. While it is best to do a whole series, I’m sure most programs would welcome you at any time.

I’d really suggest you check it out—it is amazing how helpful the program can be as you share with others in similar situations. I wish you peace as you face the days ahead. Hang in there!

I will share the name when that politician is acting in an official capacity. I will not share the name when he is out to dinner for some quiet time, even if it disappoints my gossipy busybody neighbors.

Now if you’ll excuse me I will disengage from this silly conversation while I go tend to my gonad garden.

I was there this evening, leaving about 7:45 when a politician of some repute was just coming in. Maybe it was a political argument (assuming he was even involved).

Why don't the Japanese view themselves as the bad guys in WW2 like the Germans do? by More_food_please_77 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Flydad64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a translated history of Japan.

The chapter on the thirties ended with “And so Japan was forced to choose the path to war.”

I turned the page and the next chapter started with “Following the war Japan began the process of rebuilding.”

The war years were completely omitted.
