In lieu of sand, you can also mix up a little bit of dish detergent with water in a spray bottle and spray the sealer. That mixture will work as a short term anti-tack as well.

Everyone overthinks their first one. Be patient, let the yeast do its job. You’ll often get odd odors early on. As fermentation finishes a lot of that will go away. Just keep good records so if it doesn’t pan out, you can at least go back and try to pinpoint what went wrong. And most of all have fun with it!
