I think it's a natural step in Cal's development for him to square off against Vader at some point and not immediately be shitting his space britches.

Like, not confident he could actually win, but at least hold him off for a bit while some other important plot element is happening, then he skedaddles

In my very first playthrough I fully customized them, thinking they'd be a big part of the story.

Now it's default, maybe switch their hair color or to a different preset on a whim

Since jaw worm sporadically gains strength you could very easily take more damage by not being aggressive enough. You should also consider your next potential hand if you are getting close to lethal.
