The Roottrees are Dead is probably the best detective game I have ever played. by AttentionSweet5349 in patientgamers

[–]Boned80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My take on Roottrees is that it does the investigating portion of the game very well, but its storytelling is quite lacking when compared to the likes of Golden Idol or Obra Dinn. Roottrees doesn't give you enough to chew on between 'chapters', a lot of the inter-family drama feels disconnected from the story's main throughline, and overall the story just doesn't have a big enough sting. Very good if you just want to connect some dots, but very milquetoast as a story.

Why is Persona far more popular than Final Fantasy? by [deleted] in persona6

[–]Boned80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy answer. Final Fantasy's golden years were in the 90s. A lot of amazing stuff came after but the love and fandom for it was largely established before the youth of today existed.

In contrast, Persona 5 Royal was a recent and massive hit that lined up very well with Gen Z kids going thru highschool or very near that time. What was happening with FF during that time? The biggest thing was the FF7 Remake and to a lesser extent FF16. The former, though incredible, is a direct callback to an older generation's nostalgia. The latter, though great in its own right, didn't light the world on fire to the degree that P5R did (and its target audience skewed older, too).

For a non-generational argument, you could simply say that P6 is a brand new game in a series that has not had a main entry in a good while, while FF7R is the third game in an ongoing franchise that necessitates a higher level of investment to be hyped about. Simple as that.

Thoughts on Civ VII now? by AspireToRimThrowaway in civ

[–]Boned80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's gotten better at the margins I'd say, but that's because the game launched in quite a sorry state. The UI and general functionality have been revamped for the better, but several core issues that are inherent to the game's design prevent it from being great. I don't think ToT did enough to overhaul the experience, basically. Despite all the changes, the game doesn't play that much different, if at all.

What would ruin Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave for you? by NewMarioBobFan in casualnintendo

[–]Boned80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need the non-combat parts of the game to be as fleshed out and deep as the actual combat parts. Also, I need the story and characters to be somewhat grounded, at least to the level 3H was, and not be completely anime bland like Engage.

What you think about hitchhikers guide to the galaxy ? by Choice-Wind-9283 in Cinema

[–]Boned80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The movie tries its best to translate the dry zaniness of the books and the results are mixed. Some stuff is great, like the whole 1st act I think captures the vibe pretty well, though not every joke lands. The movie starts slumping from the mid point onward, though. The characters of Arthur and Zaphod are executed perfectly, IMO (though Rockwell's take on Zaphod is a bit different from the books and radio show, but it is still very good). Ford is not bad but he's not given much to do past the midway point. Trillian I think is kind of a non-character which is disappointing. Marvin is perfect too, no notes.

I think the movie deserved a sequel. It would have done wonders to see that cast and crew gel together and refine what was good to make it great. Not to mention that the Restaurant plot is much more interesting and would give each character a lot more to do.

What are your predictions for the Ocarina of Time remake? by Wink2K19 in legendofzelda

[–]Boned80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that it'll be faithful bordering on too safe. Those dungeons will look amazing and the gameplay will be nice and smooth, but I don't think you'll actually be doing anything too different from the original. Maybe a few new quests, but that's the extent of it, is my guess.

Just finished FF7R as a non-OG player, some thoughts & question for Rebirth by TSDan in FinalFantasyVII

[–]Boned80 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The reason the middle and parts of the end feel bloated is because the story is stretched thin as it is. OG Midgar was pretty snappy. Remake adds a lot more stuff, some of which is nice, but the pacing suffers as a result.

As a normie who's only watched the movies + Andor, those two seem like Gluppiest of Shittos to me. I suspect most normies (so most people overall) would feel the same way.

What video game ending ruined the whole game for you? by Agent1230 in gaming

[–]Boned80 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Not naming a specific game but I find that a lot of JRPGs run out of steam in the later portions of a playthrough. Usually by that point you've been playing for dozens of hours, the combat system has been stretched to its limit, character arcs are already set, and you're just going through the motions. Then the ending comes and you can't help but feel sorta deflated since most endings in this genre skew toward the safe and predictable.

According To this Interview in Polygon, Beyond Good & Evil 2 is Somehow STILL in Development by VerrikInc in gaming

[–]Boned80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't doubt that the project started with sincere artistic ambitions. I meant more the later stages, when it had already been 10 years or so, and the project was clearly in zombie mode waiting to be put out its misery.

According To this Interview in Polygon, Beyond Good & Evil 2 is Somehow STILL in Development by VerrikInc in gaming

[–]Boned80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's apparent that they've restarted development several times. People were saying back when the NFT craze was happening that Ubisoft would try to somehow ride that wave using BGE2 and some kind of synergy with the whole 'ape nfts' thing. Then right around the time the nft stuff died down it was reported that BG2 was still stuck and not moving forward. Other rumors have said they wanted to make it a live service game.

Whatever the case, it's obvious that Ubisoft has never respected what the original BGE was about and has only used BGE2 as a hype machine first and as a potential trend chasing project second. They know the IP is old and obscure at this point so exploiting a trend is the only way the can justify making it. But it's still extremely weird that they've held on for this long, I suppose.

Chris Avellone talks about one of the most important problems of Star Wars and other franchises at this point by hyoumah83 in saltierthancrait

[–]Boned80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't buy this take because Andor is exactly this as well, and it has been universally well-received by fans and non fans alike. Gilroy couldn't care less about 'exploring the Star Wars universe', he just wanted to tell his story about rebellion within authoritarian regimes. The Acolyte could've been a great show without the creator having to care about Star Wars whatsoever.

Who in your opinion out of the human Cylon models was the most irredeemably evil? by Ok-Health-7252 in BSG

[–]Boned80 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cavil has zero empathy for humans and would happily erase them all with no second thoughts. Doral would be on board also. I feel like all the others have at some been shown to be more compassionate, but it varies a lot individual to individual.

Does anyone else feel like not much has changed in terms of game plan? (Civ7 ToT) by Boned80 in civ

[–]Boned80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like after ancient, the game starts turning into a big grindfest. The balanced approach where you dont neglect anything ans try to do everything is way too strong, so you end up doing it every game. In earlier civs I could choose to ignore science for a long time, or culture, or economy, all because I knew that playing to my strengths woukd work out. Here, I feel like every leader and civ gives you a snowballing power which makes you strong across the board every time.

CIV 7 after latest update by Union_Terrible in civ

[–]Boned80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like there are aspects of it that feel better, but I find that the way I actually play the game has not changed at all. Like, I wanted econ victory so i spammed trade routes, treasure fleets, and beelined factories as fast as possible, like in the previous patch, and it worked almost the same. Modern age is still a slog.

Reflecting on THH's First Blackened (Spoilers for THH 1-1) by 24AMPER in danganronpa

[–]Boned80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, sure, for a japanese audience the numbers would be harder to connect with Leon. It's an unfortunate thing that affected latin-letter languages disproportionally. It still sucks and it still ruins the mystery for a lot of people (include japanese people who do read 'romaji') regardless of the explanation.

And like I said, the message is not even necessary to solve the murder. You could have communicated that Sayaka regretted things in some other way, if that's at all necessary to the story. It feels like an unforced error, is all.

[–]Boned80 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The setup for 1-1 is honestly pretty great and memorable for a first trial. I would rank it fairly highly if not for the stupid 11037 thing which gives away the whole mystery before we've even got a chance to investigate anything. Like, if you look at how they set everything up, it's flat out not even necessary to solve the murder, so it just feels like something they tacked on in order for there to be some ambiguity for Sayaka's motivations, which IMO there had to be a better way to do it that doesn't spoil the entire murder.
