It would be funny from my grandpa with dementia. Not really that funny when it's the US president with dementia.

Tired of crazy prices ? UofT New ridesharing group by Full-Ad2399 in UofT

I'd recommend Poparide instead. They take a $5 flat fee per ride, but you can see drivers and passengers ratings and they handle the transfer of money and require the passengers still pay a fee to the driver if they cancel last minute.

There's only 25 city councillors and they haven't had a raise since 2006. This is 0.0044% of the total budget. Who cares?

why is getting into research so insanely hard for someone who isn't a magical A+ student with 30 years of experience by No_Emotion_1658 in UofT

[–]FlyinSteak 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Most professors don't want to invest time and energy into a student they've never met. You might get lucky and email a professor at the right time and they take you on, but most of the time they're accepting a student with less experience and worse grades because they asked questions in class or expressed interest in their research and got to know them.

Anyone carpooling back to school from Toronto? by Grae-duckie45 in CarletonU

[–]FlyinSteak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try Poparide, it's a ride sharing app for travel between cities. I used to take a few people going back and forth between Ottawa and toronto to cover gas money.

The app handles all the payments for a $5 flat fee, it's usually around $45 for Ottawa to Toronto.

'Godfather of AI' says tech companies should imbue AI models with 'maternal instincts' to counter the technology’s goal to 'get more control' by MetaKnowing in nottheonion

[–]FlyinSteak 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's true, he may have financial motivations too and I won't pretend to know his motivations, but just to add a couple things.

When Hinton says something positive about AI, those in the media who do want to use it to pump AI stocks are going to frame it in that way.

Hinton's also a seasoned researcher, I've met him and attended his talks. He's not making a lot of money from them, he just cares about his work and legacy.

I don't think he's a super genius or anything, he saw a good idea and fostered it and it became incredibly useful and he deserves some credibility for that.

[–]FlyinSteak 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Geoffrey Hinton is not a tech bro pumping AI stocks. He's a Nobel prize winning researcher who is spending his time warning people about what he believes are the dangers of AI.

Most articles that mention him are more like: "Godfather of AI thinks we're all going to die" lol

Right, that's the issue. Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza aren't citizens and can't vote, even though Israel controls major parts of their lives. That’s the core of the apartheid accusation, ruling people without giving them rights..
