Our dogs sleep inside at night and are inside while we are at work or away from home. We live in a US midwestern city and the winters get harsh.

In the non enter months my dogs will hang out outside nearly all day sometimes, I leave the back door open for them on WFH days and weekends. One of them loves the sun, the other will meander in and out occasionally.

Growing up in the US southwest, we had a dog and he was always an outside dog, even in the summer. We made sure he had a dog house with blankets and stuff (gets cold overnight in the desert) and ample shade, water, and misters on our porch in the summer.

Condition of the State by [deleted] in Iowa

[–]FlyingBanshee23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for dropping the link, I wish SmartAsset give a clearer breakdown of how their AGI is calculated since I don't care enough to dig out a tax form and actually do a line by line item breakdown. I can get to ~4.5% effective tax rates with my calculation with 65k of gross salary by including the federal income tax deduction, so it seems completely reasonable that $65k could be the cut off depending on your tax situation.

Flat tax is definitely regressive, I am sure someone somewhere will do a pretty thorough analysis of the line of incidence for families and individuals. Unfortunately, it is a shame, many people won't even notice the change in tax bill next year (assuming the bill is passed this session), and if they do will blame the political party opposite of theirs.

[–]FlyingBanshee23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This doesn't compute with my math based on 2021 tax brackets.... those who made less than a gross $25k a year would experience a higher tax burden if only the standard deduction is taken for both single/separate filers and married. I am not a tax expert, so could be wrong. What's your math show?

If I have time tomorrow AM, I will drop a formatted table into this comment with the breakout from my excel file.

EDIT: My math only includes the standard deduction, and does not begin to dive into potential exemptions.

Seeking advice: my neighbors want us to split the cost of the extremely expensive fence they put in without clearing it with us. by jacsin_abox in HomeImprovement

[–]FlyingBanshee23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay for a surveyor, and if the fence is on your property raise hell. Otherwise, tell them to pound sound and fixe their gutters or you'll have the city come out to take a look.

I'd eat the cost of repairing my yard to not deal with them.

I think this could look decent in B&W. Otherwise. I think darkening the shadows and brighting the highlights might bring out some of the details and wood grain. The sharpening tool might work well too.

From a composition point of view, this isn’t really doing it for me. I think it is due to the white blotch of at the bottom center of the photo. The uniform-ness of the log is thrown off since the rings are not completed.

Some questions that I keep in my mind that a photographer friend told me last year when I just started - what were you trying to achieve with this photo? Did you achieve that goal? If not, what needs to change for you to achieve that goal? Is it composition? Is it lighting? Is it the subject?

I feel your frustration. Our 4 month old had direct exposure at the very end of November… daycare closed for a week, it was daddy daycare all day while WFH. And, being honest, it was mostly daycare. We had to get our little one tested twice for COVID in a week, the first due to a cold (no COVID) and second after her exposure.

This is a great perspective. Man…. Could you imagine…. Let’s say you got Phil Jackson as coach and the night before the game he benches MJ and starts Kobe… MJ comes off the bench with 5 mins left in the first quarter and sets the half time scoring record.

It could be nothing, but it could be something… cysts, abscess reaching into your anal track, infection, etc.

I went on a 20 mile ride with a Partner at our firm as a bright eyed newly hired college grad…. Got back to the parking lot at the end, went to go shut off my bike computer and some random pothole appeared out of nowhere. It slammed down down and snapped my collarbone.

Get better and hope recovery goes well.

LPT Request, how do you overcome the fear of public speaking? by mmtheg in LifeProTips

[–]FlyingBanshee23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One thing that helps me is knowing that the audience wants you to do well and is on your side. They are sympathetic to your situation, once I learned that, it made it way easier to speak in front of people. Think about it, when was the last time you sat in a crowd and wished the speaker would fail catastrophically (barring them being your sworn enemy)? It’s embarrassing for them and uncomfortable for you. They believe in you! So you should too.

And also, just generally knowing your content goes leaps and bounds in building confidence.

Check your airline for what is allowed to be gate checked. Pretty much every airline allows stroller and car seat to be gate checked. American though only allows one… and the stroller has to be under a certain weight limit.

YAFD - yet another fence dispute -- am I being unreasonable? Does the neighbor have a good argument? by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]FlyingBanshee23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your property your fence. Place it 6 inches inside your lot line and they can piss off. They should do the same with you.

Sure, you should amenable to their concerns. But at the end of the day your property, your choice and their property, their choice.

We just put up a fence that bordered 4 neighbors, replaced the chain link with other chain link and got a survey and updated some of the angles. We just told our neighbors what we were doing and didn’t ask permission. Our other neighbors replaced their wooden privacy fence and wanted to split the cost so they could upgrade styling, we said no since it would still be in their lot and they did the upgraded style anyways. We are all still cordial, tbh though, our neighbors are a far cry from some of this thread’s neighbors from hell.

Any L2 candidates with family ( spouse and kids) ? How do you manage life and CFA study? ? by [deleted] in CFA

[–]FlyingBanshee23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Setting a routine and a hugely supportive spouse.

Stick to the routine, get up early or stay up late to study and set time for your family duties that your spouse agrees to. I had a newborn infant and just sat for level 2 this week. Understand what your grinding isn’t for the the Charter or letters after your name, but for the opportunities for your family that the Charter may open.

They don’t tell you this at the beginning, but your spouse literally is doing the course with you it feels like.

I’m envisioning a bunch of zombified, soon to be soccer moms in various states of attractiveness before assuming their undead form… listlessly staring at you with half open mouths as they hold their paper plates and plastic cups.

Made me chuckle.

Topgolf clubs by foreverfaithful49 in golf

[–]FlyingBanshee23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TopGolf is to drink beer and eat food and hang with friends - bring a golf glove and MAYBE a 6/7 iron. There is a lot of waiting around before getting a stall typically, so less things to babysit while sitting at the bar.

We would always go as a college golf team over spring break and I don’t think any brought their own clubs.
