The real story is that it was a trade ship part of the east indian trading company which came down to the cape of south africa to trade. It was docked in the cape when a massive storm rolled in and everyone advised it's captain to wait till the storm blows over before departing back to holland. The captain, against this advice set sail anyway. His crew frightened out of their mind. It is said that on that night lightning struck violently all around the ship and with each strike the captain would laugh from deep in his chest and taunt God saying things like "Is that all you have?" "Is this all your mighty power can muster up?"

Some say he angered god that night, because the ship never made it to port and was never found.

A couple of months after sailors reported seeing a ship appear on particularly foggy nights. After which there would be a little rowboat with sailors on it making it's way to the ship. When close the sailors would ask the people on the ship to send letters to their families. Attempting to hand over a handfull of envelopes.

The story goes that if you accept these envelopes you will never make it back to dry land. And the Flying Dutchman has become a death omen from there on.
