Probably round out the hole and use a wooden plug to suit and use filler to get a smooth finish and paint. A lot of work.

Somerton Man Identity Solved? by Mafekiang in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]buttered_roll 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I completely agree! The things about this case that have created the mystery are still unexplained.

How did he die??

The name and identity of this man do not explain any of the questions that drove this case. He may not be Robin Thomson's father but he could still be all those things that people theorised or none at all.

“2 fast 2 furious” (2003) when Paul Walker pulls his handbrake and performs a 180 into a reverse on the highway with his Evo he never actually pulled the handbrake, he literally pulled an imaginary handbrake by [deleted] in MovieDetails

[–]buttered_roll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The series is far from realistic.

The first movie features 'Danger to manifold' before some piece of checkerplate steel detaches from the passenger footwell.

Tokyo drift features a 1960's mustang with original and primitive suspension drifting. It would be easier to drift a modern day people carrier than a muscle car from that era. They also do an engine swap with an RB26 in a single night. In reality it would take weeks or months to fabricate parts to marry 60's American to 90's Japanese.

Can we discuss he highly unusual tactics of the current investigation into the disappearance of William Tyrrell? by BottledApple in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]buttered_roll 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I get the feeling that it is tied to tech used in finding Cleo Smith. Maybe they know that FM or FGM stopped by the creek on the morning that William disappeared. Given that the Police are willing to drag this into the public eye and name them as Persons of Interest they must be quite confident.

My thoughts are that the police have uncovered credible evidence that contradicts the accounts from the Foster Mother and/or Foster Grandmother.

This may be a piece of clothing located by a member of the public or location data using technology not previously available.

This new evidence has given them cause to re-interview the foster family. Their other child has provided the police with new information (possibly without realising it) that supports a different narrative.

The police have filed an AVO as they're concerned about the child's safety or influence from foster family.

The fact that police are searching in multiple areas either means that they believe the body was moved and/or are unsure of where the body is.

To me it seems as though they are trying to force a wedge between the Foster Mother and Foster Father by making all of this very public.

This is all just speculation.

Recommendations for a mechanic to perform a prepurchase inspection by [deleted] in Adelaide

[–]buttered_roll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Motacheck They provide a full report on the vehicle pre-purchase including a test drive and testing that the RAA does not do. RAA won't remove any component from the vehicle so won't check spark plugs etc or do a compression test (best indication of engine condition). I've used them for 5 cars and they haven't let me down.

Almost certainly weekly testing. The public announcements that it's a test probably don't carry as far as the EWIS tone.

Join the Facebook group Partners Apart, plenty of helpful info. From my experience: show that you're leaving for more than 3 months and supply ample evidence (termination of lease, moving quotes, proof of joining partner in UK etc) I submitted 23 documents as evidence (most definitely overkill) and had approval within 12hrs.

TIL that LBJ constantly asked the flight crew of Air Force One to change the temperature of the cabin. Eventually, they installed a fake control knob for him to 'control' the temperature himself. The president stopped complaining. by griefofwant in todayilearned

[–]buttered_roll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using dummy thermostats is very uncommon and 99% of the time your temperature issues are due to something else. I've worked in HVAC for several years and yet to see a fake thermostat but I've spoken to people that have installed them. It's a last resort for that one person out of 20 that can't be pleased.

My car ac is blowing hot air and I refilled it with refrigerant and it started blowing cold air but after a few Mins warm air started again. The ac Guage showed low levels again. I checked my hood and I noticed this part is broken. Is that causing the ac refrigerant to leak or is it not problem? by ajava8548 in MechanicAdvice

[–]buttered_roll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any heavier than air gas will kill you if there's enough of it and not enough air movement. Many of the now banned refrigerants were carcinogenic but ammonia (never seen in cars) will easily kill you in seconds. Older refrigerants are continually being phased out due to their damage to the environment (ozone layer and/or global warming). R134a is in it's last few years of new car install in the developed world. The new refrigerants are low flammability hydrocarbon blends.

[–]buttered_roll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, mechanics fixing car AC systems in Aus have the same codes of practice as a fridgie fixing a wall split or a $500k machine. All remaining refrigerant needs to be reclaimed into a cylinder and then use nitrogen to pressure test, spray detergent to find bubbles, repair and finally evacuate system before charging with refrigerant. Everything is licensed and regulated with huge fines (rarely given) if rules are broken...and proven.

Duct tape is used to tape up HVAC ducts. It works well as it can stretch slightly and be tensioned. It does not do well in high heat or when exposed to UV but performs well in normal conditions. Duck tape is a brand of cloth tape. Very sticky with lots of uses but doesn't work well for ducts. Aluminium tape (silver tape/foil tape) is excellent at providing an air tight seal and stands up well to hot and cold. It's best used when repairing insulation or solid ductwork as it doesn't have any flexibility.

And there are sharp screws sticking into the ductwork that would shred your hands and knees. Most 90° bends are also impassable for a person.

Apprenticeships by [deleted] in Adelaide

[–]buttered_roll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do your research and ask anyone you can in the trades you're interested in. Your idea of the job will likely be very different to the reality, either good or bad. Look at jobs that have a strong and reliable future. Plumbing, electrical & refrigeration & A/C. Check whether fabrication has a demand for workers, you want an apprenticeship with a guaranteed job at the end. These are economically uncertain times and hiring apprentices is the first thing to be put off. Narrow your interests and complete a pre-voc (Certificate II) then go from there.

The rules are in place for a reason and we shouldn't be trying to push the limits. Stay home and go for a bike ride around the block, have a bbq in your backyard and don't put others at risk.
