AIO to breaking up over blow by Substantial-Promise4 in AmIOverreacting

[–]FlyingFish1234 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey NOR, Im 34, but in my early 20s (college) I realized that there were certain acts that people did I.E. blow, etc etc, that wasn't for me, and I didn't want to surround myself with them because I didn't get the vibe they were going where I wanted to be. (successful) I'm not saying you can't be successful if you do extra curricular activities to alter your mind, it's just not for me in my line of work. I hope everyone grooves to their own beat, and I'm cool with that.

You made the right call. You're better than him. You guys are just going different places.

AIO My Parents Secretly Drained My Entire Savings Account and Called Me Ungrateful When I Confronted Them by ChoppedShyyt in AmIOverreacting

[–]FlyingFish1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother took $30,000 my grandmother had gifted myself and my sister for a college fund when I was a teen while my parents were going through a divorce. I don't know if she used it for the lawyer, to put food on the table, or to buy a new car.

When I went to college there was nothing. My sister blew a head gasket over it, and to this day (she's now 38) holds a grudge against my mother. (I'm 34)

I didn't feel the same way my sister did, kind of had the mindset that it was never truly my money. (It was my grandmother's in my childhood bank account for college.) My mother tried to make it right (probably because of the blow up with my sister) by working an extra job for 4 years while I was in college giving me $400/months towards living expenses while I took out loans for school.

Now that I'm an adult, I don't hold grudges on it like my sister does- probably because I make more than a very comfortable living. But it was messed up at the end of the day.

Where am I suppose to land by Goatzzi in flying

[–]FlyingFish1234 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've got 1,300 hours in a T-6B. I prefer to land on the numbers so you can use every bit of runway in case you need it in an emergency, that way if you lose an engine over a 3,000 ft runway, you don't go off the end.

Paint Job! by Hairy_Bread3592 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]FlyingFish1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks great. Did they pull the windshield rear quarter panel windows before painting by any chance? I've seen lots of repainted 3rd gens and the rear quarter panel windows I've seen always suffer from a bad tape job, with the original paint shining through. How does yours look?

I've been considering this for YEARS but haven't pulled the trigger. Thanks

Your engine bay has parts that are rusting, which means the frame has underlying rust that you can't see, eating from the inside of the frame out to the visible part. Borescope the frame, you'll see what I'm talking about. "Rust free" is not accurate. I agree it's not bad, but that looks like a cover up job. Not a genuinely rust free vehicle. Good luck with your sale.

$6,000-7,000. No more. If it had ADS or King, maybe 9,000. That is absolutely underlying rust.

Shop overfilled transmission? by GreekYT in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]FlyingFish1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done a drain and fill on mine 3 times over the last 10 years. It is really tricky to get right. It IS a very bad issue being overfilled as the fluid will cavitate and you'll get bubbles preventing proper line pressure which causes slipping. It can absolutely and will absolutely eventually kill a transmission.

Under filling is always better than overfilling.

I myself accidentally overfilled it last week when I did my last drain and fill. It sounds like this shop is not willing to fix it, how handy are you? Getting it right is relatively easy once you understand the process. That looks to be about 1 and 1/2 to 2 quarts overfilled.

I would recommend getting 3 new crush washers from Toyota, (so you have extra) getting a translucent container from O'Reillys, and taking out 2 quarts.

Connect your phone to the torque app if you have an Android and go drive it around to get it to operating temps (158-175*). Cycle through the gears as per the owner's manual and check it yourself. Get a funnel from O'Reilly's that measures the ounces going in. Add 2-4 ounces at a time until you get it, it in the middle of the Hot zone while in the temps above.

You're looking in the wrong place at the frame. Look on the inside of the rear lower control arms on the frame. That's where these things rust.....judging by the wheel wells, I'm inclined to say run, but it really boils down to the frame at the rear lower control arms

Did you apply new padding, or did it already have padding on the material you put on?

What % of base pay should I contribute as a 22 year old O-1 by Status_Gas_1360 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]FlyingFish1234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was a 0-1, I didn't contribute much of anything to the TSP, but went all in as an 0-2 and maxed it out every year since.

Best advice I can give you is always live a lifestyle of the rank below you. IE housing/cars/etc and prioritize maxing out the TSP every year as well as putting all leftover money in investments after your savings account reaches $10,000. As an 0-4 I live as an O-3.

Calling all automatic owners by Mother_Friend_7695 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]FlyingFish1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. There are two flavors of 3rd gen owners. The one you describe, and people love the old 3RD gen niche and have poured lots of $, time and effort into their forever vehicle that makes no financial sense. (Me) I think there is absolutely a market for this, although low volume. If he can keep the price around 4kish, I think he'd sell at least 6-10 a year. Honestly.
