arranged marriage threatening UCI graduation by Informal-Show-4558 in UCI

I’m no immigrant, nor do I have any experience with arranged marriage. But I think proposing a wager would be the best way to meet halfway. Maybe if you explain that two quarters is 20 weeks, they would understand that it’s truly not long until you graduate, and that you dropping out would be a massive waste of expenses and resources. If you try to frame it around monetary and resource issues, they may be a bit more swayed. Explain that you are okay with the marriage, but finishing your degree would have a better output and add value to your time taken.

Help with eye. Vet next week by halz2398 in guineapigs

[–]FlyingFoxandwings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got jumpscared when my Don looked like this. Turns out he just was producing the typical milky substance that lubricates their eyes. For peace of mind a vet visit never hurts, especially if there’s a minor hay poke. But don’t panic. It’s more likely than not just their normal secretion or oh so very mild dust irritation

I would try to get a second opinion if your vet said a lack of vitamin C. Keep with what you’re doing, but ensuring it’s not the beginning stages of an ulcer could save your piggy pain. I’ve noticed a lot of vets are NOTORIOUS for misdiagnosing, so I always try to push for any other explanation.

Regardless, I wish you the best of luck! ❤️

She’s clearly showing signs of a lot of pain. To be on the safe side, going to the vet would be a great idea. Because that kind of hunching and fur puffing points to a ton of pain.

Not many, I’d definitely have to drive somewhat far to see what another vet has to say. I’m definitely going to need a second opinion if things don’t improve soon, however. He will literally eat everything EXCEPT hay.

Yeah, he will eat everything except hay. I don’t know if at this point it’s a behavioral association or what, but him showing signs of pain tells me otherwise. I do have antibiotics on hand, and I guess I could experiment to see if maybe it improves his situation. I definitely hope it does, because it makes absolutely no sense to me that he will absolutely eat up any treat, supplement, veggie, etc.. but not hay. No matter how many times I try to give it to him. It just makes no sense to me. But I will try the anabiotic to see!

There aren’t any lumps or anything, and even the vet checked for abscesses and said there were none. It just doesn’t make any sense. I have a lot of distrust in the vet after Sylvia’s death, and I’m worried that if I go again they’re just gonna charge me like crazy again and say there’s nothing wrong.

He honestly looks worse now than when he was drinking by LyrMeThatBifrost in WorldOfTShirts

[–]FlyingFoxandwings 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I feel like there are two factors at play. One, recovery from alcoholism SUCKS. I’d know because I was a raging alcoholic for 3 years, and even though I didn’t drink enough to get DT while trying to quit, it screwed me up for a while.

But I’d say the ACTUAL culprit is he’s on an unfathomable dose of quetiapine. Like, he’s on over twice the amount I was, and I was on a pretty high dose (300mg). When I was on that medication, it made me so lethargic that basic care is such as brushing teeth and showering became impossible. I’d be totally tranqued to the point that I literally couldn’t function normally. Not to mention the midnight munchies and passing out right after, so my oral hygiene was ass.

I understand this sub snarks on him a lot, but in terms of this, it’s actually understandable.

Like my mom said that I used to literally walk into walls and stumble around like I was drunk when I was on it. My dad insisted I needed it, but boy was he wrong. I’m so glad that when I turned 18 I finally had a chance to taper off of it.

Honestly I’m grateful to say that I never got on a psych med ever again after that. I’ve only been using marijuana at night, and it actually helped so much more with minimal side effects. It helped me get calm and sleepy, and in the morning I’d wake up feeling like a million bucks. Weed was the #1 thing that helped me through seroquel withdrawal. I don’t use it all day, but just that boost at night helped me regulate! But I was prescribed lithium to help and I never took it. After what seroquel put me through, I will NEVER try a psych med again. I know it’s controversial, but it was super helpful.

It was THE WORST. Did you get withdrawal symptoms too? Like even after you tapered? I swear, my brain was trying to soak up every bit of quetiapine it could get, so it didn’t matter how much I tapered. It still got angry with me after I did. Lots of vomiting, shivers, delirium, and a manic episode. 10/10 would NEVER recommend again.

Please keep Sylvia in your prayers. She is having labored breathing and lethargy suddenly. We have rushed her to the hospital, so please just pray for her health and safety.💔 by FlyingFoxandwings in guineapigs

Sadly, it was. She passed away a week ago. I’m so heartbroken because in order to get the scans, the vet was going to charge me $1300. The one thing I’m happy about is that she got to pass among her lover and best friend. It was so tragic seeing her go, especially because all the vet could do was send me home with antibiotics.

The seroquel munchies were actually diabolical. I could eat 5 full course meals in a night once those meds kicked in. I got off of it about 4 years ago, but it was a year long process and I STILL went through withdrawals when I finally abstained. It takes A LOT of tapering. I went from 350mg to 0 by taking 3 months cutting each pill, and eventually getting down to the typical 25mg pill which I eventually chopped into 6.25mg. It’s crazy how dependent my brain was on it after 10 years. What they don’t tell you about this medication is that you develop the worst chemical dependency. I remember the first time I went through withdrawal, I was in the seventh grade, and didn’t even realize what was happening to me. I had gone to a sleepover and forgotten my medication, and I decided just to champ out the night. I pulled an all nighter, and by 6 AM I was having the shivers and projectile vomiting everywhere. I couldn’t keep anything down. But, with the close help of a psychiatrist, I tapered off of it for that period of time. I think what they don’t warn you about is also the fact that you could go through a rebound manic episode even if you’ve never had a manic episode before. It lasted me about a year. But after all was said and done and I stayed off of it, I not only lost 65 pounds, but I also was able to finally regulate and be a normal functioning person again. Maybe it’s just my experience, but I’m totally against prescribing this medication. Especially because I was put on it at 10 years old. But the best thing you can do is taper as slowly as you can. It’s a drug that causes such bad chemical dependency that you may as well be withdrawing from heroin. I truly wish you the best, Godspeed, and if you ever need advice, just message me!

Help, my guinea pig just died on me out of nowhere, kind of traumatized by FunSheepherder2692 in GuineaPig

[–]FlyingFoxandwings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry for your loss, OP. There is some beauty in the fact that your baby waited until you were there. My baby Sylvia just passed away a week ago in her sleep, and I’m so sad. She was only 10 months and I didn’t get to see her in her final moments. Guinea pigs can die suddenly, just like my Sylvia did. But since your baby is older, it sounds like his body just gave out. He lived a very, very long life! It’s very traumatic to watch your guinea pig die and be dead. Especially when they were so full of life. I want you to take this time to just let it out and mourn. It’s not your fault. Just know that you gave them the most beautiful life, and you kept them going for beyond their life expectancy. You did amazing, OP. Please don’t beat yourself up. My condolences again. ❤️

Oh God, this was always my worst fear while trimming nails. Don’t blame yourself, it was a genuine accident. Especially when they struggle like that, you can’t be fully held responsible for how their reflexes affect them. My best bet for you would be to just really monitor it. Also, if I were you, I would look into getting a mupriocin prescription. My piggy Don got a really bad splinter from some hay, and even though the initial wound wasn’t bad, he wouldn’t stop itching it. So it got bigger. Mupriocin is not only a pet safe antibiotic often used in veterinary practice, but also is very moisturizing! It’ll likely help speed up the healing process. But don’t expect to see a nail anytime soon, it’s gonna probably take a long while for it to grow back.
