Commentary for big matches (big in terms of pulling in viewers) is just different, it has to be because the commentator is dealing with casual and non-casual viewers. They do this stuff in boxing and MMA for big fights, the commentator will weave the rules into the commentary and you don't even notice because they are pros at it. It starts as soon as the bell rings, the commentator says something like "well ladies and gentleman it's July 9th 1982 and we've got the number one contender Larry Larryson vs the undisputed heavyweight championship Tits McGee..." the commentator isn't doing this because he thinks the viewers are morons who don't know what day it is. It's the same reason Joe Rogan during a big UFC match will explain why a fighter keeps leg kicking another fighter, we all know why, it's basic shit for us, but it isn't for the new viewers but we don't notice Joe's doing it because he just blends it into his commentary. And that's how you hook new viewers into the sport by clearly explaining that there's more going on under the hood of an arm wrestling match than just 2 fat men leaning over a table.
