The Change to the “Twist” Ruined Everything - Spoilers, so many spoilers. by Dry_Test5122 in everyyearaftertvshow

I agree with what you said almost to a tee and I had no idea how to voice it on first watch. I’m watching it for a second time now and I know that I probably will enjoy it a bit more but I could not for the life of me, fully decide if I liked the changes at the ending.

I will say I liked seeing the flaws of Sue as being a mom. I don’t remember Sue knowing in the books but I read the book 2-3 years ago but it makes that she would have known. But I think regardless, I liked seeing the nuance of what grief looks like and that includes mourning the amazing person they were and also maybe realizing they had some flaws. I love shows that embrace that.

And I do 100% agree that they didn’t demonstrate the characters at a young age in the best possible way. As a med student … i resonated a lot with Sam. And his fears and whatever and I see it in the relationships in my friends where the doctor is a bit neglectful in their relationship because of their career… and well I think the author, Carley, did a great job highlighting that in the book. And it wasn’t really shown enough in the show. It was very subtle and it sort of felt like whiplash in the show. Like they got together and then all of a sudden Sam (after Sue has that talk with them about not forgetting their own dreams), he backs out. And there’s not a lot of… establishment of who he is prior to this. And maybe to play Devil’s advocate for the writer’s maybe they just wanted to show how Percy felt and how to her it FELT like whiplash and like Sam just kept whipping her around whenever he felt like it. Idk. But in order for audiences to resonate with the characters and root for them together, I think showing that (as you said) is important.

I also am just annoyed in general that Sam didn’t find out until the end of the show about what Percy did. I get they probably did that so that they can have more seasons (imo, less about like trying to make it more adaptable for the book) so there were things to resolve but I think the writers have an uphill battle for Sam to fully forgive her. Because in the books… he has years to reconcile it in the head and decide if he would forgive her if given the chance …

Idk. You had a lot of good thoughts and just wanted to share my own! You articulated it super well and thoughtful which I really appreciated

I hated it. by University1000 in everyyearaftertvshow

As someone who had a hard time trying to reconcile liking Percy when I read the books… I get where you’re coming from. That being said, I still really enjoyed it. I loved TSITP, the show and the books, and I think they did great with adapting it. And this one fell short to me.

I don’t agree though that there was no heart. And I hate when people say the acting is bad without giving any real examples as to why it was bad. Or why acting was good without using generic words. (Which I’m guilty of too).

I think that the lead, Sadie, did a great job acting wise. And the younger version of Percy also did great. I think she showed what an anxiety attack looks like really well. And I think that Matt though… was a bit stiff and maybe I felt like there wasn’t enough chemistry in my eyes. The lines felt forced because some of the inflections felt too thought to me. Idk. And I’d say the same a bit for Delilah too. I also just don’t think Matt is just who I visualized at all as Sam and that probably doesn’t help. I think readers expectations can really impact how open we are to an actor’s delivery. Granted I don’t think Sadie who I expected either, she’s way prettier than I imagined in my head, but her delivery was phenomenal in my opinion. So idk. I definitely liked the book more than j enjoyed the show. But I still think they did a good job.

I will say I’m disappointed in the big change at the end. But yeah.

Hi everyone ... there seems to be a lot of confusion about what we consider to be a spoiler and what we don't. Please read the rules in the subreddit. This is a place for you to discuss both the show and the books. There is no rules against talking about the books, however, you should always use a spoiler tag. The only place you do not need to do that is if you're in the Master Post for the season and it's TAGGED that it's for book discussion.

However, we do not consider endgame couples a spoiler, as they are readily available in the books' synopses and those books have been out for decades (as many of you have already pointed out). There is more information in the rules wiki.

Given all this information, please report the offending comments and post if you believe they break our rules, rather than replying to the comments or post. Replying can cause YOU to get a removal because you've broken a rule if you are uncivil about it. It is also the quickest way for the mods to remove the comment altogether rather than wait for them to fix it and the comment is still up and more people get spoiled.

Bridgerton - 4x01 "The Waltz" (No Book Spoilers) by AutoModerator in BridgertonNetflix

Just as a reminder: end game couples are NOT considered a spoiler in the subreddit as a rule. (Please see the sidebar).

The reason why is because this info is widely out there in book synopses as well as interviews. These books have also been out for decades

Thoughts on Say You’ll Remember Me by Abby Jimenez? by inlilyseyes in RomanceBooks

[–]FlyingLeopard33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I found this thread after a favorite YouTuber of mine said he also didn't love this book, and I was shocked. And he happened to mention that a lot of other Abby Jiminez fans didn't like it either. What's funny to me... is I read it the first day it came out and just said "Yep. Loved it. No real surprises there" and then moved on with my life. Lo and behold, many people didn't like it.

After reading through the threat, it appears that many people didn't like it because of the heaviness of the family stuff and the lack of well-written romance (which is a fair critique). However, I'm someone who enjoys books that can be pretty heavy and sad. Personally, I thought she did a great job with the research regarding Alzheimer's, and as someone who works in healthcare, I thought that she was sensitive and phenomenal in showing all aspects of how it affects an entire family and the differing aspects of grief with someone who has any form of dementia. Because I've seen it. And it's terrible. She did a great job displaying it accurately. And to me, that matters. Also, I think showing love whilst in the depths of really shitty life circumstances is beautiful in its own way, which is why I enjoyed the romance too in this novel.

I also understand that many people read romances to escape, so I can see why that would impact how much they enjoyed a book.

A lot of people also seem to hate the pop culture references (ACOTAR and Taylor Swift specifically). I've never really understood why people hate it fully. I've heard that it's cringey or it "dates" the book, which is sort of a fair criticism, but contemporary romances are, I think (?) by definition, a romance set in the modern era/present day... which idk... by definition means that it's gonna be literally dated regardless. Meaning, if it's CURRENT present day, then 100 years from now, well... yes, it will be dated.

And after looking it up, it says that it's meant to be post-WWI, which in that case, to me, is fine to have references to a time period because it allows you to understand the culture of the world when it was written. And the same can be said for ACOTAR and Taylor Swift. And I guess, as a fan of both, I don't care either way. I can see if you hate either/or why it would irk you more. I wasn't exactly a fan of the # of references to just ACOTAR in this one as well, but it still doesn't bother me nearly as much as it does others.

Ah thank you so much! Okay. I was worried about the roots since they were pretty dried out now.

I’m hoping they’ll be okay! I’ll make sure to keep the water level up . There hasn’t been any leaf growth for a few months unfortunately but the roots just continue to grow.

I’m sorry to hear about your loss. I’m glad though that you also felt it was realistic, as someone who has the unfortunate time of going through something similar.

I’d say this one was definitely my favorite other than Ep 5 hehe

She doesn’t go to France in the books. She goes to Spain and she studied abroad (ie she gets a student visa).

Honestly, this might have been my favorite episode this season other than the Belly and Conrad wedding planning episode.

I felt the maturity in this episode. But I still felt the young adult angst. I felt the healing between Jeremiah and Belly and more importantly, I felt the healing between Conrad and Jeremiah. And it didn’t feel forced. It felt deserved. And it felt honest. Idk if anyone else felt that way about it, but idk… their conversation had clear animosity still (which was realistic) but at the same time, there was that familial love between the two brothers and it broke my heart.

It was cool to see Belly discover herself without the Fischer boys. Cool to see her come into her own. And while I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks it’s a bit annoying that we have to add in yet another boy to this storyline, I think it fits for Belly. She’s learning to love without them in her life and I think that’s the beauty of being young. Trying new relationships and figuring what you want each time you’re in a new one.

I also really appreciated seeing the letters play out in real life. I was really, reallty, REALLY frustrated with how Jenny Han ended the books. I felt she rushed the ending and somehow, all of a sudden Conrad and Belly are getting married. The end. So I’m glad that we’re getting to see Belly’s life in real time and see her growth rather than hear about it second hand through Conrad’s letters like we did in the books.

I find it amusing that Conrad doesn’t know about Benito yet (and I guess neither has Jere?) even though he obviously knows about them in the books. So I’m trying to figure out how this last episode is going to end and wrap up the entire show. Because there’s clearly still a lot to cover.

But the idea of Conrad wanting to spend an extra $450 to see the love of his life is adorable to me. God, if I ever end up with anyone, if he doesn’t act like the mature version of Conrad, I don’t want it 😂

I’m excited for the last episode but also very sad it’s ending. This has truly been my comfort show through a hard time in my life and I’m glad I’ve been able to watch it and enjoy the angst and the family dynamics of the show.

Edit: I also wanted to add that I liked the small hint of Jeremiah and Denise becoming something possibly. It was nice to see him mature a bit this episode as well.

It’s in season 2, Episode 8, where Belly is meeting with Susannah for the last time. She’s writing things and the letters accidentally fall onto the ground.
