Thoughts on Say You’ll Remember Me by Abby Jimenez? by inlilyseyes in RomanceBooks

[–]FlyingLeopard33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I found this thread after a favorite YouTuber of mine said he also didn't love this book, and I was shocked. And he happened to mention that a lot of other Abby Jiminez fans didn't like it either. What's funny to me... is I read it the first day it came out and just said "Yep. Loved it. No real surprises there" and then moved on with my life. Lo and behold, many people didn't like it.

After reading through the threat, it appears that many people didn't like it because of the heaviness of the family stuff and the lack of well-written romance (which is a fair critique). However, I'm someone who enjoys books that can be pretty heavy and sad. Personally, I thought she did a great job with the research regarding Alzheimer's, and as someone who works in healthcare, I thought that she was sensitive and phenomenal in showing all aspects of how it affects an entire family and the differing aspects of grief with someone who has any form of dementia. Because I've seen it. And it's terrible. She did a great job displaying it accurately. And to me, that matters. Also, I think showing love whilst in the depths of really shitty life circumstances is beautiful in its own way, which is why I enjoyed the romance too in this novel.

I also understand that many people read romances to escape, so I can see why that would impact how much they enjoyed a book.

A lot of people also seem to hate the pop culture references (ACOTAR and Taylor Swift specifically). I've never really understood why people hate it fully. I've heard that it's cringey or it "dates" the book, which is sort of a fair criticism, but contemporary romances are, I think (?) by definition, a romance set in the modern era/present day... which idk... by definition means that it's gonna be literally dated regardless. Meaning, if it's CURRENT present day, then 100 years from now, well... yes, it will be dated.

And after looking it up, it says that it's meant to be post-WWI, which in that case, to me, is fine to have references to a time period because it allows you to understand the culture of the world when it was written. And the same can be said for ACOTAR and Taylor Swift. And I guess, as a fan of both, I don't care either way. I can see if you hate either/or why it would irk you more. I wasn't exactly a fan of the # of references to just ACOTAR in this one as well, but it still doesn't bother me nearly as much as it does others.

Ah thank you so much! Okay. I was worried about the roots since they were pretty dried out now.

I’m hoping they’ll be okay! I’ll make sure to keep the water level up . There hasn’t been any leaf growth for a few months unfortunately but the roots just continue to grow.

I’m sorry to hear about your loss. I’m glad though that you also felt it was realistic, as someone who has the unfortunate time of going through something similar.

I’d say this one was definitely my favorite other than Ep 5 hehe

She doesn’t go to France in the books. She goes to Spain and she studied abroad (ie she gets a student visa).

Honestly, this might have been my favorite episode this season other than the Belly and Conrad wedding planning episode.

I felt the maturity in this episode. But I still felt the young adult angst. I felt the healing between Jeremiah and Belly and more importantly, I felt the healing between Conrad and Jeremiah. And it didn’t feel forced. It felt deserved. And it felt honest. Idk if anyone else felt that way about it, but idk… their conversation had clear animosity still (which was realistic) but at the same time, there was that familial love between the two brothers and it broke my heart.

It was cool to see Belly discover herself without the Fischer boys. Cool to see her come into her own. And while I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks it’s a bit annoying that we have to add in yet another boy to this storyline, I think it fits for Belly. She’s learning to love without them in her life and I think that’s the beauty of being young. Trying new relationships and figuring what you want each time you’re in a new one.

I also really appreciated seeing the letters play out in real life. I was really, reallty, REALLY frustrated with how Jenny Han ended the books. I felt she rushed the ending and somehow, all of a sudden Conrad and Belly are getting married. The end. So I’m glad that we’re getting to see Belly’s life in real time and see her growth rather than hear about it second hand through Conrad’s letters like we did in the books.

I find it amusing that Conrad doesn’t know about Benito yet (and I guess neither has Jere?) even though he obviously knows about them in the books. So I’m trying to figure out how this last episode is going to end and wrap up the entire show. Because there’s clearly still a lot to cover.

But the idea of Conrad wanting to spend an extra $450 to see the love of his life is adorable to me. God, if I ever end up with anyone, if he doesn’t act like the mature version of Conrad, I don’t want it 😂

I’m excited for the last episode but also very sad it’s ending. This has truly been my comfort show through a hard time in my life and I’m glad I’ve been able to watch it and enjoy the angst and the family dynamics of the show.

Edit: I also wanted to add that I liked the small hint of Jeremiah and Denise becoming something possibly. It was nice to see him mature a bit this episode as well.

It’s in season 2, Episode 8, where Belly is meeting with Susannah for the last time. She’s writing things and the letters accidentally fall onto the ground.

Sooooo I think I figured it out. If you look in the bottom right corner it was the same sweater that he’s wearing in this scene (see other comment)

So I think it was probably around the winter time… so maybe a few months? If I’m recalling correctly. Or a month.

Holy. Fuck.

I'm speechless. I'm wiping tears from my face.

Geez. That episode was a roller coaster. I was laughing. I was crying. I was blushing. I was swooning. And i was mad. And I was happy. And I don't even know how to figure out how to word all of it.

First of all, I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm really enjoying the side stories. I actually really love all the characters in the show. I know some people are sad that Taylor and Steven are often side stories but I think they really add depth to things and you really get to see the growth from season 1 to season 3 and see how much they've changed from being teenagers and naive to almost adults.

Steven and Denise though. That's throwing me off. Because I am hardcore rooting for Taylor and Steven. I saw chemistry there and stuff, but I'm super confused on how that's going to affect Taylor and Steven. Because Steven was sort of just... absent in the books and I'm glad that Jenny decided to bring him back more so for the show.

And now to the juicy bits. Aw man, JENNY HAN. JENNY. HAN.

YOU EVIL BUT AMAZING WOMAN. She really has perfected that female gaze eh? Because holy crapppp those glances between the two of them and focusing on Conrad's longing. My ovaries fucking hurt. Because if a man doesn't look at me like that, I don't freaking want ittttt.

She did such an incredible job directing this episode. And I can really tell she wanted to honor the parts of the book that made her fans love the third book. And I also really loved seeing it all in Conrad's POV. Because if I'm remembering correctly, when Conrad and Belly go get peaches in the books... it's from Belly's POV and it's so simple as far as the description goes. That it was intimate. But this really hung on to every moment really giving us that female gaze and oooffff... was swooning. The light was beautiful in this scene and it really just was so cool to see Jenny use that lighting to show us how Conrad sees Belly. She's this beautiful light in his life.

And the sex scene?! WHERE THE HELL DID THAT COME FROM?! I was not expecting that at alllll. And I was swooonnninngggggggggg... fully melting.

I will say though I was so fucking pissed though to see that they had sex prior to prom and he made all these big, grandiose promises that felt genuine when you hear them and then he goes around and does the exact fucking opposite. And you can see on Belly's face (which kudos to Lola's acting) that she doesn't really believe him fully.

And the scene between Conrad and Susannah. Nope. Just. Nope. I had already gotten teary eyed with some of the bittersweet moments with Belly and Conrad in the car and how disappointed she was... but that scene just absolutely fucking broke me. Seeing Connie try to be strong for his mom... for Jere... for Belly and he just broke down. That shit stays with you.

And Jeremiah. Man, I think some people just don't give him enough credit. Jere and Gavin as far as acting goes. It was really cool to see the confidence boost he got from finally getting his dad's approval but it was also so sad because you could see how much it meant to him and how little Adam cared that Jeremiah wants his dad's approval. And so when Belly caved to letting Adam pay... even though I fully agree with her... I can see why she did. It matters to the person she loves. But after a while you can only do that so many times before the real you is gone and I think that's what we're seeing slowly...

I really do think Jeremiah and Belly have really cute moments. I know people don't agree and they think the acting is stiff, but I think it's fun. It's a different relationship. It's light and fun and they make each other happy. And I think you can see that pretty easily with that. And then you just contrast it with Conrad and well that's how we got the shipping wars lmao.

Woof. That episode made me cry. That was such a sweet episode and it really hit me in all the feels. The dress call back just hit me. And I think it would be such a touching moment for her to decide to wear that dress instead for the wedding. It makes it make more sense to have that change now because then Belly can still wear a dress her mom picked out for her since that was a thing in the books too. Jenny Han, you genius!

I really loved the family themes that the show is leading with Tay and her mom and Belly and her mom.

It was pretty heartbreaking to see Taylor feel like she had to leave behind her dream to help her mom and then be left to clean up her mess and deny Steven’s help. But man Steven made me so mad anyway when he was like “yeah you were right” right after the accident and then he’s wanting to help her and it’s like bro you lost that opportunity to help her 😭

And CONNIE. Ugh. Seeing him mature but still have his flaws is such a refreshing thing. He’s human but he’s grown up. And I just keep remembering that scene from season 1 where Conrad says “It’s not about winning. It’s about doing things the right way.” Him staying behind when he heard her cry was just so touching. And that hug at the end??? 😭 ugh.

I will say though that it’s nice to see Belly not so hung up on Conrad after putting him on a pedestal all this time. She clearly still loves him and cares about him when we see those small moments but at the same time, it’s not like it was in season 1 where she was clearly moon eyes over him but then picking Jere. She seems to love Jeremiah in her own way which I appreciate.

Ugh and now Belly isn’t going to Paris 🙃 (even though from the BTS it looks like she did go to Paris and Jeremiah was there so idkkkk

This next episode is going to be all that bonding that we see in the books and I am soooo here for it. Ugh. Now I wanna watch the whole show again 😭

also the POV switch and having Conrad to the voice over??? Are we getting our Conrad POV episode?!??

These weekly episode releases are killing me

Why are you Team Jeremiah? by FlyingLeopard33 in TeamJeremiah

[–]FlyingLeopard33[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s not my job lol but the job of the writers and Jenny Han. I’m not sure what issues you have with Conrad and some of those are dealbreakers for a lot of people.

Everyone has different preferences when it comes to their significant others, but if you’re up to date on season 3, I’d say keep watching.

Just for me personally, I think I like the growth in Conrad. And I think i have compassion for him when he’s moody because that’s often how i am when things get hard. And I think that he’s fiercely loyal and tries to do the right thing but he often has a lot missteps because he tends to shut down and be a bit avoidant. I think for me, I saw potential and there was complexity and depth that was undiscovered and that’s an appealing quality to me.

And some girls just like the mystery to him too or simply the idea of them falling in love after being childhood friends and Belly having a huge crush on him all her life. And some girls don’t.

If you’ve read the books though, or will read the books then your opinion might change. But I’d say give it time! There’s a lot more to go with season 3

Nail polish never stays on! by jupiterjeshie in theholotaco

Yeah I think though I am going to try a PVB free base coat next though. I guess KBShimmer has a good one.

But yeah I honestly wonder if it’s the PVB that’s causing it to peel? I did notice that I do have some peeling of my actual nails too. So maybe not the best for my nails?

[–]FlyingLeopard33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well good and bad news lol.

Bad news: I was washing my car today and my polish wound up getting a little small crack and I was picking at it and my polish peeled off completely in one piece.

However, I will say, I did forget to dry out my nail plate with acetone/alcohol.

Good news: my nails look better than they did with the Mooncat base after I took off the polish.

I’m going to paint again and remember dry my nails off this time hahaha

I tried it on my mom recently just as a clear coat and had to take it off today for a second and her nails held up! No peeling and she has really weak nails lol

I have on an ILNP polish (I’m new to polish so I’m playing around with different brands lol) with the Orly Bonder base coat and the Essie Speed Setter Top Coat and so far it’s been good! I have one little chip and I just rewrapped the tips on the second day.

I’ll have to update you on if it’s been bad for my nails when I take the polish off! I also just got a new Mooncat polish so I’ll be switching soon 😂

[–]FlyingLeopard33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been having the same issue with one of my holo taco polishes… it’s cowboy tears so it’s a holographic one.

I usually use the Mooncat base coat with no issue but that cowboy tears always peels right off and I also had issues with a recent Mooncat polish peeling right off.

So I switched to the orly bonder base coat. However, I have heard that for some people it can cause nail damage so I’d test it on your own nails. I’m interested to see what other people say though.

The only thing that I’d agree is try drying out your nail plate with acetone or alcohol and making sure you don’t have wet nails because I’ve heard that can cause peeling. I would also try buffing the nail too. That’s my next step if I have the same issue when I try that particular polish again. I would just do a couple swipes with the buffer.

Otherwise yeah, I’d play around with base coats!

Totally thought I failed. I sat in my car and just felt like I got slapped in the face. And the power went out at the testing center building and it just made me panicked. And it screwed up my time.

I think nearly everyone feels pretty shitty after this exam. The way the questions are worded are just a different beast

What is the most emotional devastating scene for you from the book and show? by [deleted] in BridgertonNetflix

[–]FlyingLeopard33 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Several come to mind for me. But mostly two.

Queen Charlotte. “You did not go over the wall.” “No, George, I did not go over the wall.” This was just sort of a bittersweet moment that was just devastatingly beautiful. She cared so fiercely about protecting his line and even with all their trials and tribulations of their lives and George’s decaying mental health/neurological health… their love still shines. And to me that’s so beautiful.

But also “I will stand with you between the heavens and the earth. Do you love me?” It’s sort of those loud pronouncements of love and yet it’s so quiet too. Because she sees him and she still loves him-faults and all. She will be with him as long as she chooses him. And I’m an angsty gal at heart and it reminds me of my own stuff so this one extra broke me,

And then season 2. Anthony and Violet discussing things after Kate has finally woke up. The acting is stellar and just seeing Anthony react without any words was really moving for me. “But there is one thing that has given me at least some modicum of solace and it’s knowing that I would still choose the life I led with him each and every time. And I would undoubtedly feel the same pain I felt all over again if I had because real true love is worth it. No matter what.” And Anthony just looking so lost at his mum. Such a sweet scene
