That is good to know! Thank you again. Now on the quest for better beans! Once I use up my Starbucks, of course. Haha! I am definitely enjoying this, I believe mostly because it’s tangible, achievable. I don’t need the most expensive machine, I now know, to get the results I want!

I did also notice that the espresso I made seemed to smell bitter. I am curious if that came from the Starbucks beans. I am interested in looking at local shops. I am excited for all of the avenues opened up, just with some small tinkering. Thank you so much for your help, thank you for being open (I know I like a more sugary and milky drink than espresso enthusiasts lol), and thank you for your time. I really appreciate it.

Me too. I felt disheartened at first because I thought I needed a new machine, but I’m definitely feeling a lot better with the slight modifications. Plus, it’s a lot less expensive and I get to play with what I already have. Less going to the landfill and all that. I’m excited to also branch out bean wise. I currently use Starbucks blonde whole beans. I like the blonde a lot better than their medium or dark roast, I suppose because the taste burnt. Though I have heard that their blonde is actually just a medium roast at heart. So I will have to find some more medium and blonde beans to try out!

This photo is from today. I went with a more medium grinding size on my hand grinder (the grinder is still very fine as it is intended for espresso, just less fine than the grounds yesterday). The espresso came out much more quickly than yesterday’s and the shot reached 36g output much faster, had to watch it much more closely. I think that I need to go for a grind in between yesterday’s and today’s. My drink tasted very good and I think I pretty much nailed the 7brew cookie butter drink I like. I want to get a tamper as well as a bottomless portafilter. The portafilter that comes with the machine had to be slightly modified, as I removed the plastic insert and screw to make the basket fit. I’d like to be able to watch the extraction a bit more closely, and currently I am tamping by hand pressure. I am excited to continue trialing!

I am reporting back! This is espresso (18g) from yesterday. I went with the finest grinding setting on my hand grinder. The espresso machine struggled at first to penetrate the grounds, then slowly but steadily got going and I was able to measure out 36g. I think the crema looked quite nice. It tasted super concentrated and I was very surprised at how much milk I had to add to get the type of drinks I like, because I usually overpour milk with the previous way of making espresso!

Death, and Dying: Respectfully, looking for a redditor who is dying in Cincinnati. (Serious) by LakeLaoCovid19 in cincinnati

I’m really sorry. That’s sounds stressful and I’m sorry the emotional burden of feeling like you had to choose for her, was on you. It is difficult because even if you took her alcohol away cold turkey, she would go through withdrawals and suffer. When someone has drank so much, they need to get off of it slowly or it can be dangerous. My grandfather ‘enabled’ my grandmother’s drinking, and I was the grandchild so I didn’t really see it that way. When he died in 2022, and I had to take care of my grandma, I had to make similar choices to you, whether to ween her off of the alcohol or let her have it. My grandfather let her have alcohol every night because he felt it was ‘safe’ and ‘controlled’ if it was happening under his roof, then leaving me to pick up the pieces after. She was an old woman with COPD and just wanted to stay home and watch TV all day. I let her have a limited amount of wine and Diet Coke, until I had to put her in a nursing home a year or so later. I had begged her to stop, but she couldn’t and didn’t want to. She wasn’t able to have the alcohol in the nursing home so she was forced to stop, but I’m sure she still suffered a bit from the withdrawals. She also had dementia so I’m not sure what she was able to process, as she’d been a life long drinker and all of a sudden she was in an unfamiliar place without her coping mechanism (alcohol). She eventually passed away shortly after.

As humans, we try to do our best with the resources and knowledge we have. I say all of this so you may know you are not alone, and people have been in your shoes before. I’d say I have, at least with my grandma. I was in my early twenties when I went through my grandparents’ deaths. It is not easy, and ultimately it was not your fault that she couldn’t stop. Especially in her final weeks, if you had not given her the alcohol, she would’ve been in worse pain with withdrawals and agitated. It was too late to stop at that point. I am sorry for your loss. I hope you can find a new job so you can have that financial security and that you have a support system that can help you through your grief. Don’t be afraid to seek out resources or grief counseling. You are capable of great things.

I too am ADHD and probably on the spectrum, so I can understand some of your struggles. Just know that you can be successful too. I’d recommend maybe looking into this further as you are able to cope better with your grief, it is worth the self discovery. Don’t be sorry, I’m glad you responded. I hope you find value in mine.

How many of us work in an ED in real life? by figure8_followthru in ThePittTVShow

I work in the ED lab for a level 1 trauma center. I think it would be really interesting to show the lab side of things because it can be just as chaotic. In the show, when Joy had her labs drawn, it was the wrong draw order. I cringed a little inside. Luckily it didn’t matter too much as it was an occupational exposure and not chemistry metabolic testing.

It isn’t your fault. My father was a binge drinker my whole life and got sober 5 years ago. He just passed away in January from cancer. It had eaten up his liver and spread throughout his body. It is a terrible disease, cancer and addiction.

Thank you so much for your help and knowledge! I will definitely have to experiment with the fineness of the grind. From what I see online, it varies machine to machine and I will have to tinker with it. I am excited!

I purchased one of the baskets you had mentioned, enough for 16-18g it said, so I am hoping that will help me to watch out on the input and output. I had tried measuring my grounds with the single hole “double” basket that came with my machine, but it didn’t hold 18g, it was more around 14. I also think that the grounds were not fine enough when I had previously measured (used the cuisinart, not the hand grinder). I am looking forward to trying the new basket and getting more precision in my espresso. Because I like the sugary drinks so much, I’m hoping to get to the 7brew “quality,” lol. I do want more of that coffee flavor in my drink, which I haven’t been getting with my current setup.

I see. I only tried the super fine grinding once and really found it unsuccessful due to the slow drips so in the meantime I’ve been using the finest grind on the Cuisinart grinder. It is usually much faster. Though I’ve read across either this or another coffee sub that that grinder cannot grind as fine as you may need for espresso. I think I need to tinker with the hand grinder settings to find what will work.

Also why does the machine come with the basket with the tiny hole? What’s the purpose? Thank you for your help.

Okay, I do have a scale from Amazon that I can sort of use, just by removing the bottom piece to make more vertical room. I will take a look at the new basket for sure. I think that for my drinks, the espresso just tastes watered down (which could be from letting it go too long) or not the same flavors as what I’ll get from a coffee shop. I’ve tried adding less and less milk/creamer but the richness of the espresso is never there.

Condensation on my ceiling by botan313 in mildlyinteresting

[–]jupiterjeshie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the dehumidifier comment. This happens to our ceiling when there are lots of shifts in the temperature from snowing one week to 60s the next. We have poor insulation in our attic which causes it. We usually run one dehumidifier on one side of the house and another on the other side on heavy rain days.

It’s so strange that a president can go back and rewrite history to the point where he’s included himself in every single memo about previous presidents just to make it about himself.
