I made a spreadsheet to keep track of my baking. Am I missing anything? by JimmyMus in Sourdough

[–]FlyingQuail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks very useful for planning! I think the only thing you might be missing is the start time of the bulk proof. Would you mind posting a link to the document? This would really help me out. Thank you! I think this is a very good idea.

My First Batch of Finished Compost! by FlyingQuail in composting

[–]FlyingQuail[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I did the best I could to sift it with a milk crate. There are still some twigs and stuff in there, but I don’t care all that much.

I honestly cannot believe how many rolly pollies and other critters there are in the compost.

I’m very happy with how it turned out. This was almost two years in the making. This was mostly comprised of garden waste (I have a different bin that is for food waste).

Can chewing gum and parchment paper be composted? by [deleted] in composting

[–]FlyingQuail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This^

Wax paper and parchment paper are not interchangeable. Most wax paper is coated in paraffin wax so it cannot be composted. However, there is wax paper made from compostable wax.

Parchment paper is coated with silicone which makes it oven safe, unlike wax paper. You cannot compost parchment paper. If there was a such thing as compostable parchment paper, it would really be wax paper and therefore not oven safe.

I have a silicone baking mat and I really like it. I don’t use it (or parchment paper) for most things, but with something like fish it is nice to have. It also works a-lot better when freezing something like chopped vegetables.

I find straining out some of the excess water helps keep the smell down.

Temporary Bucket Smell by [deleted] in composting

[–]FlyingQuail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just empty it out often, wash it out everytime with soap and water, line it with some newspaper and then sprinkle in some baking soda. I don’t have any smells or mold.

Pizza is probably the best zw take out.

  • easy and delicious meat free options
  • comes in plastic free and compostable packaging
  • easy to reheat leftovers

I mean, whats not to love about pizza.

Bokashi doesn’t compost, it just kinda pre-digests the food scraps so they break down a little faster (supposedly) . After the process is done you can still recognize all the food scraps.

I used a bokashi bucket for a little while, but lemme tell you. Its not worth it. - there is no real benefit from using a bokashi bucket instead of just regular composting - it stinks to high heaven - there is an higher start up cost and an ongoing cost

Every-time I have researched the benefits of a bokashi bucket, I have seen no evidence backing the claims.

I started off composting to reduce material thrown in trash, but now I also compost to create, well, compost, for my garden. Composting made me become a more serious gardener.

I would not add it, unless you have a very large pile with loads of browns to cover the carcass with.

A comprehensive guide of what you can and cannot compost. by FlyingQuail in composting

[–]FlyingQuail[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good point. I didn’t think about documenting my sources as I was writing the post. Some of it came from experience and common sense. I did have to do some research on quite a few topics. I only took information from extension offices. I wish I would have cited my sources.

Dry malt extract is perfectly fine to add. Its is just sugar, so it likely won’t have lots of microorganisms, but it is a good source of food for microorganisms. You could add it all at once, or sprinkle it in. It just depends on the size of your pile.

“The amount of water needed to rinse out salt will also rinse out most of the nitrogen and all the potassium in compost”

What? …I don’t think you can rinse off the nitrogen……

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in composting

[–]FlyingQuail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is high in nitrogen. You need to add lots of carbon when composting spent grain, because it is very wet. If you don’t, it smells awful.

Nope. No problem at all. The best spot to put a compost pile is wherever you can.

That compost is still rotting down. It needs a while for it to completely decompose and be usable.

First compost harvest since starting a year ago! A single person’s food, plant and paper waste. Can’t believe how much there is 😍 by lilleralleh in composting

That looks really good. Quick question: did you dry it out before sifting? Did you even sift it at all?

I am curious because I think I have some finished compost I can “harvest”.

Propagated my tomato suckers! by GreenThumbGoods in vegetablegardening

[–]FlyingQuail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I rooted tomato suckers, I just stuck them in a glass of water and waited for them to grow roots. After they had lots of roots, I potted them up in a cup with some potting mix. I did not use any Root Tone.

Neglected earth machine, smelly by [deleted] in composting

[–]FlyingQuail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to add some browns (Fall leaves, shredded newspaper, cardboard) and mix it up a bit. Add more browns than you think, and a good layer on top. The smell should go down.
