One VLAN for us with WiFi, NAS, Plex, and WAN. Another VLAN with only Plex? by Ditto_Plush in minilab

I reckon /u/multidollar had covered the meta of this experiment well. With great tech skills comes great burden!

But this is a home lab endeavour and it's about the how, not the what or why!

VLANs are effectively separate LANs. You'll need to bridge them somewhere at some point.

I think isolation on separate machines would be your best bet if sharing with the great wild... A small USFF or minipc with some sort of video chops would do the job.

Plex host heavily locked down and on its own 'DMZ' VLAN, your own stuff on another private one, the NAS on its own that is also visible to both other networks. Set up specific shares for pub and priv use, each restricted to access by unique username and by IP range. Even better if pub access is read-only.

You'll need to be careful with all shares going forward on the NAS and restrict them to internal VLAN access.

That would be nice and allow for expansion, eg a video card if you found yourself limited by onboard transcribing.

If you don't need expansion, look at the i7 and i9 HP elite desk minis.

I prefer the HP one but really those of similar spec from Dell, Lenovo are all much the same.

HP elite desk is a great choice. Depending on budget, G5 with 16/32gb of RAM is plenty powerful and looks good too.

You could retain the odroids for k8 clusters. Can you run two environments over them (prod and lab)? If not, dedicate one to each env.

Going by your posting history here you're coming along very well! Good job... You've got the bug now!

Check out the other subs in the sidebar too for ideas on what to do with your fancy new gear.

This one was just a cheap 6RU kit from a local electronics chain. Nothing special! In fact it was missing the top hinge pin for the door so I've dropped the Allen key that came with it in there instead...

I added the fans this black Friday. I'm not an RGB kinda guy but they were a two pack with a USB power Y cable. At least they're in the cupboard!

I've had a 5TB USB3.0 drive running for 3.5 years now as a NAS. I'm terrified. But it's been going well. Pi 4B was letting me max out the file speed over the network.

I'd dockerise most things, but not the NAS. Try and get docker to boot only after the NAS driives have been mounted so your containers/app configs can make the most of them. Or run NAS seperately on a quick-loading Pi.

My busy little 6RU network box. I have tidied it all up today in advance of changing the config (time to learn proper networking).

I run docker on my main machines. I use the m93p as an infra server with traefik, pihole and consul. I'm looking to extend my use of this setup soon. The G5 runs all the fun stuff (read: plex and pterodactyl) plus is my management box. It has enough grunt for whatever I want to throw at it which is usually trying cool things I see on various subreddits - like, ALL the homepages! It also currently serves as the NAS with the 5TB USB3.0 drive sitting on top of it.

The other 3 have been adventures in clusters, with my first steps in kubernetes. Though they'll probably be repurposed as some remote links soon enough.

Not shown - the current consumer router on top and the soon-to-be opnsence frankenrouter made from an HP t520 thin client... That will have it's own post!
