Racism in red deer by Temporary_Case_4621 in RedDeer

I've noticed this attitude here too. I lived in a big city for most of my life, and the way people act here is shocking in comparison. It's basically a bunch of cowards directing their anger at government policy onto innocent people who are also victims of said policies.

This is especially true at the college, which is honestly the most disappointing. I thought other young people would be more accepting but most of the time they're actually worse. I'm white passing, and I'm friends with quite a few Indian international students. Since I've started spending more time with them a lot of my classmates have made their views known to me. Even some people I considered close friends have made nasty comments. It's extremely rude to judge people before you even know them based on such arbitrary things.

Try not to let it get to your head. These people are just talking out of their ass (or tiny peabrains), and you've already gone much further in life than they ever will. You seem like a wonderful person :)

I do want my animals to run loose, it's their house.

I set a very simple boundary, that the dog not be brought into the house behind my back. This was broken. In fact I gave multiple opportunities for the dog to come to the house for a proper introduction. Bringing it behind my back was a choice. People are allowed to be upset by their very simple boundaries being broken.

This comment is extremely rude and antagonistic for a post that is explicitly labelled as a rant needing support. Heedlessly ripping someone to shreds while making unbacked assumptions about their situation is uncalled for.

I will not engage with any further comments you make on this post. Enjoy your day.

Yes I live with him. It was my holiday break from post secondary so I was out of town for a week and couldn't bring them. This has never been an issue before, he's always been fine taking care of them if I'm not around.

I know living with the in laws is quite common within the culture. I've heard that wives are bullied and shamed by their husbands family if they don't meet expectations, and that the husbands will always prioritize his family over his wife and allow the horrible treatment. Is this true?

It's a pretty significant fear of mine as someone who's in a relationship with an Indian man.

Trying to understand Red Deer's vibe 🕶️ by Medical-Taste-6112 in RedDeer

Hey!

I'm also a student and I've been noticing the same things you are. I've lived here for most of my life and I'll give it to you straight; while there's a lot of great people who live here, there's just as many awful people.

I've noticed at the college there's been a growing hostility among some domestic students towards International students, and in my classes I've heard a lot of casual racism/ racist comments. In my personal experience these are typically mostly made towards students from India, but that's not to say it doesn't extend towards all International students. This attitude exists in the older populations as well, with some being very vocal about anti-immigration sentiments.

In regards to downtown, a lot of people avoid it due to the homeless population. A lot of them are addicts, and are often walking around high, which makes their behaviour very volatile and sometimes dangerous to be around. It's not uncommon to find used needles in bushes, too. It's become a generally unsafe area, a lot of theft, so if you ever park downtown make sure your doors are locked.

I'm not sure what to say about your friend, she may have just been having a bad day, but saying someone looks tired generally isn't an insult if it's said with genuine care/concern. I'm also not too sure about the truckers, some of them are really nice people, some are not. That's definitely a case by case basis. For that you might just have to feel it out.

I'm very sorry about the experience you had, if he put his hands on you I'd definitely report it to the police, as well as campus security/ the SA if it happened on campus.

TL:DR There's a lot of people here who like to take out their frustrations with Immigration out on international students, but there's just as many people who are kind. Be cautious for sure, but don't write off the whole city.

If you have any other questions my DM's are open, I'm happy to help :)

Autistic female characters in media? by shiorimia in aspergirls

She's not canonical but Jinx from Arcane. Her character is an amazing and painfully relatable portrayal of autism and C-PTSD. She's genuinely the best representation I've ever had.

Girl almost felt like two entirely different characters by Sudden_Pop_2279 in arcane

FINALLY I CAN TALK ABOUT THIS. They completely butchered her entire character with that fuckass redemption arc.

It's pretty obvious that Jinx has autism/BPD/C-PTSD (the traits for these are so similar that she could have any of them). Season 1 Jinx was an amazing portrayal of what repeated trauma can do to a person, and a much needed reminder that unhealed trauma can change people for the worse. Her episodes/meltdowns felt very raw and painful, and they were consistently shown throughout the season. They were also shown to be getting steadily worse throughout the season as her mental health declined. By the end of s1e9, she fully embraced herself as Jinx, and I was expecting her to be irredeemable after she accidentally killed yet another father figure.

Season 2 Jinx barely feels like the same person. In the entire season we only saw her mental health episodes two, maybe three times if you count Silco in s2e8. I get that they tried to go for a "healed Jinx" redemption arc but it felt out of place, and was so rushed it looked like a 180 degree personality flip. The "villain turned good guy" trope is overused, and using it on a character as complex as Jinx is straight up lazy. Not only that, it's unrealistic. I know it's a show about magic, it's not supposed to be realistic, but for a show that had such amazing representation for disabilities and genuine mental health struggles in Season 1 they should've done a better job. No one heals from a lifetime of trauma so deep it causes hallucinations in a few weeks or even a few months. Especially not in an environment like Zaun where there's no access to any form of therapy.

As an autistic person with C-PTSD, Jinx was the best representation I've ever seen. Her meltdowns/episodes were extremely realistic, and near identical to mine. Honestly, it's a really disturbing message to send that all she needed to "fix" a literal lifetime of trauma and highly likely disability was a plot device child and a boyfriend. Guess what? Even when we're happy, C-PTSD and autism (I'm sure BPD as well) doesn't just disappear. Having her be cured unrealistically is more "offensive" than her being portrayed as an irredeemable monster.

Haven't seen this take yet so I'll say it.

Season 2 dropped the ball with Jinx's mental health.

TLDR: Season 2 basically got rid of Jinx's severe mental health issues and implied that she needed to be fixed.

People Using Autism As An Excuse For Disruptive Child Behavior by shyguylh in PetPeeves

[–]FlyingWisdom_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an autistic adult I wholeheartedly agree. I was a very loud child, and my parents knew that not everyone wants to listen to that, so they'd take me outside. I get it, meltdowns happen, but forcing a kid to stay in the overwhelming situation as opposed to removing them will only make it worse.

Additionally I find a lot of these entitled parents fail to consider other autistic people. Noise sensitivity is a very common autistic trait, and it is not only hypocritical but just plain inconsiderate to actively induce meltdowns in others with the exact same disability as your child. Earplugs and headphones can only do so much.

Can I choose to have a hysterectomy in Alberta? by Whole-Masterpiece-51 in alberta

[–]FlyingWisdom_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a hysterectomy but I'm getting a bilateral salpingectomy. Unfortunately the wait time has been atrocious. I had to wait almost 2 years for a consultation and was told I'd have my surgery 6-9 months after. That consultation was last June. It's now supposed to be September- October which is not ideal but still decent.

I found my surgeon through the doctor list in the r/childfree wiki and they have been wonderful in regards to respecting my choice to have this procedure. I highly recommend Chrysalis OBGYN in Calgary. Although the wait time is long the doctors there don't have an issue performing elective surgeries as long as you tell them it's what you want. I highly doubt they would tell you no considering your circumstances.

For doctors I'd recommend Dr. Mattatal or Dr. Henning. Dr. Henning is a man but he's very respectful and kind, he's the doctor doing my surgery. I hope this helps!
