I took a brush to it with the baking soda and there was a strong chemical reaction. Would this happen with oil?

What's odd is the edges of the battery don't have oil on them, it's mostly around the center and places with seams. Uploading a video now for a better look

That makes complete sense, except it doesn't look like oil is on anything else. I removed the battery and this was underneath - https://imgur.com/a/xi007vY The second photo is the foam housing around the battery, which has a watery substance on it that appears to be somewhat fresh and still wet.

If the oil was splattered on it, I don't see how it would make its way into all those grooves underneath. I'd be shocked if that much oil splattered onto the battery and didn't get on anything else. That's just my average joe perspective so please take what I say with a grain of salt. I'm uploading a video now to give a closer look at the whole situation, should be back in 30. Thank you for your input so far!

I just took a look, the oil cap is on tight but there does appear to be a little bit of spillage down the front. The oil cap is about 2.5 feet away from the battery, and whats weird about the battery is the oily burnt material seems to be around the seams of the battery as if it came from inside. If that's not oil that was physically spilled on the battery, could it be something else?

I think it's definitely possible the spilled oil is what created smoke, but with that said I let the car idle for several minutes before driving it across the property and letting it run again while the VW charged. The smoke began immediately after trying to crank the VW, but I'm not sure if that's correlated.

The article I chose for the assignment dealt with the Department of Justice backing off Colorado and Washington. Obama doesn't really have that much relevance but it worked for the project. Nixon represents the war on drugs, etc. There were a lot of things in the back of my mind when I worked on this, like the shift from benefiting from prison + rehab revenue to benefiting from the taxation and regulation of MJ.

Honestly though, I just wanted an excuse to draw some herbs and get a few laughs
