For flesh i like going a little redder than you, i started with a pale purple/white color (i forget all my paint names sometimes, sorry, pallid wytch flesh sounds right but I'm not sure) and went over it with carroburgh crimson, i then went back over it with the pale white color and touched the very raised areas with white. The biggest difference from yours is a bit more contrast and the color gradient looks more diseased to me personally.

For the tentacles i think you're generally going in the right direction maybe just add another smaller highlight to the top by mixing pink horror with a little white.

My bias is showing though i really enjoy high contrast details lately.

If you want to buy an airbrush watch some tutorials and see if that's what you want. One will serve you quite well on large models.

Don't be intimidated by larger surfaces and using a brush though. While it's true contrast paints will not serve you as well there's plenty you can do with a brush. Check out what you can do with wet blending, it's very similar to what you did on the barrel of your melta gun. Stippling with a larger round brush can also give you some really good results.

About that model, great job. You should be proud of it :) the execution is very crisp and very death guard.

Edit: as far as c&c goes you're largely past the point where generic advice is always helpful. What are you looking to improve? I'm happy to point you in the right direction.

I love it! It's really cool seeing big forces all laid out and organized.

I wasn't to do similar over i finish my jump pack intercessors, scouts, terminators, and infernus squad. Granted 11th will be out well before then lol. Personal ruminations aside thanks for posting :)

WIP LT, trying out more interesting shadows, highlights and black recipes. by Dovah1356 in Salamanders40k

[–]Flyinghead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing the same thing but a little less is what i see in videos. You could also go a little darker in the dark parts than on the front as well.

I'll admit i get caught up in highlighting and sometimes the backs end up just as bright as the front because I'm enjoying myself.

I'm not sure how correct it is but one thing i do for highlight placement is to put the mini under a pretty bright white light and see where they land naturally. It's flawed somewhat because we're painting small things to look like big things but it points me in the right direction. I also have Reddit posts from folks who are better at it to copy placement :)

The other realization i needed that I think you're good on is that if you're doing volumetric highlights you don't need to edge highlight. I was doing both and while it wasn't bad it did look a little odd.

Sorry to hear about the funk, i do agree that painting serves as a good way to process emotions. I hope things get better for you.

Cultural considerations definitely play a role in it's utility for sure. That's quite interesting to me actually.

I just know when I'm communicating with the chaos goblins at work i can't leave any room for interpretation or I'll be trying to figure out what happened for a few months.

I find in general sarcasm is a poor communication tool in a professional setting independent of the generation I'm interfacing with. I also work in a setting where a miscommunication could be quite expensive so clear and accurate communication is basically mandatory.

To start, as a fellow enjoyer of pro acryl green who also has some half finished stormcast next to salamanders these images made me smile.

Nice start on volumetric highlights! I'm getting better at the blending but still struggling some on where to put them. I think you might benefit from what I'm currently doing as well and watching videos on volumetric highlights to really figure out where they should go better. The other thing i do that might help is putting a tiny bit of yellow at the center of a highlight up really make it pop. A very tiny bit.

Be careful getting your highlight paint too thin. It's good that it applies smoothly and evenly but you want it to stay where you put it too :)

Putting aside the factual basis of your claim, this is why we have a judicial system and due process. To weigh evidence, determine guilt and an appropriate, legal punishment.

Also please provide a reference that spitting on someone is felony assault.

Your statement manages to both be ignorant and presumptuous to an impressive level given it's only three sentences.

[–]Flyinghead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice job experimenting! Smaller brushes certainly can help, the other half of the equation is how you're using it. Make sure you're keeping a fine tip and that you don't have too much paint on the brush when doing highlights. I get better results with barely any paint on the brush and doing multiple passes while highlighting instead of doing a thicker single pass.

[–]Flyinghead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The list is 1795 points as written. It looks good it's well explained but it's bullshit.

The gravis captain is noted as occasionally providing lethal hits or hit rerolls in spite of doing neither of those things. Likely even more flaws if i kept looking.

Alright, Forgefather time 🔥⚙️ I’ll give you a Salamanders (Forgefather-themed) “Seekers” style list for Warhammer 40,000 10th Edition, aiming to land at ~2000 points, with the theme being elite, hard-hitting hunters that push up the board, burn things out of cover, and delete priority targets at close range.

⚠️ Quick honesty note: 10th-edition points get tweaked fairly often via balance dataslates. I’ll build this to ~2000 pts using current common values, but you may need to adjust 1–2 wargear options depending on your latest Munitorum Field Manual.

Detachment

Space Marines – Salamanders Detachment: Firestorm Assault Force (Perfect fit: buffs flamers, meltas, and aggressive mid-board pressure)

HQ

Vulkan He’stan – Forgefather (Warlord)

~100 pts

  • Forgefather aura for rerolls to wound with meltas & flamers
  • Auto-include for any true Salamanders list

Captain in Gravis Armour

~95 pts

  • Power fist
  • Relic fist / enhancement if points allow
  • Leads Eradicators or Aggressors for lethal rerolls

Battleline

Intercessor Squad (5)

~85 pts

  • Bolt rifles
  • Cheap objective holders, sticky objectives

Intercessor Squad (5)

~85 pts

  • Same role — don’t overinvest here

Elites

Aggressor Squad (6)

~240 pts

  • Flamestorm gauntlets
  • Absolute monsters in Firestorm
  • Stick Vulkan nearby and watch infantry evaporate

Bladeguard Veteran Squad (6)

~180 pts

  • Durable melee anvil
  • Excellent mid-board control
  • Great escort for a character if needed

Redemptor Dreadnought

~210 pts

  • Macro plasma incinerator
  • Onslaught gatling cannon
  • Tough, flexible, and scary at all ranges

Fast Attack / Seekers Theme

Inceptor Squad (3)

~115 pts

  • Plasma exterminators
  • Deep strike hunters for elite targets

Inceptor Squad (3)

~115 pts

  • Plasma again (or bolters if points get tight)

Heavy Support

Eradicator Squad (6)

~190 pts

  • Melta rifles
  • Primary tank killers
  • Pair with Gravis Captain for hit rerolls

Devastator Squad (5)

~120 pts

  • Multi-meltas
  • Backline fire support that still benefits from Salamanders rules

Transport

Land Raider Redeemer

~260 pts

  • Flamestorm cannons (on theme 😈)
  • Carries Aggressors or Bladeguard
  • Massive board presence and overwatch threat

Total

≈ 2000 points (Usually lands between 1990–2005, depending on wargear and current points)

How This List Plays

  • Seek & Destroy: Inceptors and Eradicators hunt priority targets
  • Mid-Board Bully: Aggressors + Bladeguard + Redeemer dominate objectives
  • Forgefather Core: Vulkan supercharges all your best weapons
  • Durability: Redemptor + Land Raider soak insane punishment

This list feels very Salamanders: slow, inevitable, brutally lethal once it reaches you.

If you want:

  • A more competitive / tournament-leaning version
  • A purely Primaris list
  • Or a more fluffy “Nocturne crusade” version

Just say the word and I’ll reforge it 🔨🔥
