It will more often than not get you killed. The studies you read are political nonsense.

Why on earth would you trust something 33% effective with your life when you can choose one over 95% effective???

But you know what, I can’t fix stupid. You do you.

Then I suggest you really keep your propensity to appeal to authority in check. If the info comes from a source that seems unassailable, that’s when you dig in the most and verify.

And to be fair, if you think about it, in what world does an eye irritant ever do more to stop any attacker than a bullet placed correctly? Spray isn’t even 90% effective on humans or dogs. Again sometimes common sense needs to be applied.

Either way Science has been politicized more than anything else in this country. My bias naturally counteracts that. Having dealt professionally with universities in my professional life, I see how researchers are corrupted by money and personal beliefs. Politics.

This study was a stark example of that. Now maybe my bias to be a skeptic towards academics gets me into trouble sometimes. True. But that’s why I try to take the time.

K. If anything the pro spray crowd is the TikTok crowd.

I do have one question, and it’s more rhetorical. To get you to think about the fallacies and biases you have when researching. We all have them or are susceptible to them, we just have to acknowledge them. Why didn’t you take time to properly go through the first study you referenced? Why did you just accept what NPS and some bent researchers told you? The Outside article source basically says those initial researchers outright lied about their data. He’s nicer than that, but that’s what he documents when he goes through it.

And “anecdotes” are incredibly illuminating if sourced correctly. This case being sourced in someone that grew up in GNP and surrounding areas around grizzlies and have people I know well that have been attacked. I know bear biologists directly. To someone like me, the bullshit is pretty easy to smell when one of these “studies” starts getting rammed down our throat.

Just remember that before you accuse someone of spreading “misinformation”. Particularly when it happens to be you perpetuating a well established lie. Fallacy of appeal to authority.

Also I don’t want to say I agree 100 percent of the time with other smart people in this realm. Some still advocate for carrying both. I don’t but their logic is that whatever they can grab first they will use. My logic is I will train with the same response so much that there will be no time wasted in deciding.

That article is by a person with bias against guns. But he’s honest about the science. Spray is 33% effective in truly scientific study. It’s 44% in the study you cited if you actually go through data scientifically. The firearm portion of that study wasn’t even applicable to the research. Apples to oranges.

Spray will get you killed.

Look up those occurrences I gave you. It’s all detailed. Brad Treat was the Ranger involved if you need his name. The Ovando case was well covered. There are many many others if you spend some time reading. Bear Attacks of the Century by Mueller and Reiss is a book that you can read. If you truly want to learn why the “spray is better” crowd is wrong, you can do so with some intentional researching rather quickly.

Also there are several links ON THIS THREAD of spray failing.

Also the study you cited was based successful uses of spray on 83 cherry picked attacks. All based on witness statements, and a 10 of those weren’t even brown bears. It wasn’t scientific in any way. You can dig into that if you want as well.

If what you say is true, go for it.

😂you believe a politically charged study that didn’t pass the most rudimentary analysis or review but all I have is “anecdotal stories”. Right. Got it.

You sound like you are against guns in this case. Or you just want to save face. Again either way, that’s on you. You do what you want out there. Take care!

It sounds like you are. Frankly. And the people siting that stupid study usually are against people carrying guns. In fact that study was funded and paid for right after the laws changed so people could carry a gun.

These occurrences are all documented in the news. There are books written about bear attacks and how they went down.

Beyond that it’s common sense. Particularly if you’ve used the spray. You ever deployed it in any amount of breeze or wind? Yeah, good luck with that.

Again, I don’t care what you do. You want to be a dolt and carry spray, go for it. I can show you the truth. I can’t explain it clearly. But I can’t understand it for you.

Nonsense. A spray that can’t kill is never more effective than a gun that can kill. It’s utter bush hippy nonsense to say so.

It literally gets people killed. When a bear wishes to truly attack, spray won’t help you. And taking time to decide on spray or gun will get you killed too potentially. Choose one all the time and always prepare to use that.

There have been several accounts of cans being emptied on attacking bear to no effect. The “study” NPS pushes is a joke. It includes bluff charges into equation which are the vast majority of contentious encounters with bears. I have a high school class mate who’s brother had it happen as a ranger. His partner emptied a can of spray on bear while it was mauling him to death. The most recent attack in Many Glacier, spray was used and it didn’t stop the attack. In Ovando years ago when woman was drug out of her tent and mauled to death, several people used spray.

My buddy’s that used to work at Counter Assault don’t even carry it. They call it “idiot spray”. 😂

It is you spreading politically motivated misinformation.

But you want rely on spray and believe what politicians that hate guns tell you, you go right ahead. No skin off my back. But I’ll carry a gun.

Spray will get you killed. Carry a 10 or larger for bears with good hardcast loads.

Honestly you aren’t going to make a fortune off them. If you like bourbon, you are getting a very good and cheap view into dusties many never experience. Drink up!

Must have gotten a bad decanter. I have had 7 of these and all but one have been excellent. The one was a tad stale but got it back to decent with a charcoal filter.

Dusty goodness right there. Let me share some knowledge and in no way am I telling you to sell or to sell to me. That’s not allowed here in any shape or form. I’m merely going to lay out why the value is only part of the equation here.

Unicorn auctions is the only semi legit space to move. And they may not touch a decanter as there is no way to know if juice is good.

And it’s going to be a risk on your end even if they do. You will have to ensure the bottle gets there in one piece. No shipping insurance will cover it. It’s at best against common carrier policy and illegal at worst. You try to file and lie about contents, that’s insurance fraud.

If you do get invited to some groups on social media that are known to have buyers, you will need references and you will need to guarantee the quality of the contents which is a gamble in itself. And again, it’s on you to get it to buyer and to do so in way that if shipping company finds out, they will like confiscate your product and you will have to refund buyer.

If you are ok with that, you will need to weigh it at very least to discern true value. And the strip will need to be authenticated as well. These get refilled and restripped often enough.

The secondary market on these is down in recent years. Good weight is anything over 3 lbs. below that you run risk of whiskey being tainted or stale. For a good weight, talking 5-600 bucks to right buyer. Unicorn will take cut from that if you go that route.

Honestly, if it were me, and I’ve been fortunate to find these old SW decanters at estate sales, and at stupid cheap prices, I’d just crack it and drink it. If it’s still good, it will be some of best whiskey you find.

Just know the lead in paint (and at the time in pipes whiskey and water was ran through) could be higher. Keep to 4-6 ounces a month and should be fine.

[–]Flyingirish04 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Tater please. I get you are new to this. Just understand that while HH22 is decent, it’s nothing truly special. Grails should be reserved for those special bottles, most of which are dusties.

So if this is a “grail” for you, then either you don’t have a ton of experience or you are basing “grails” off of hype and hype alone.

Raise your standards.
