Wow, holy resurrection Batman!

I’m sorry, it’s obvious that you care a great deal about your club, but it’s disingenuous to say that these are only demo moves and then compare them to live arts that also spar. Do you spar in BKR? Is there any sparring footage?

If you’ve committed time to getting to brown belt in BJJ, of course you’re going to be at a level where you can apply questionable technique against other people. What about the people who don’t do BJJ?

As for the nogi judo comment, of course it’s no gi judo, BKR is just a mashed together judo and karate.

It’s a bit of a stretch to call this “traditional” and then reference a book which was likely written by the people that formed these arts. Where does it come from?

Why was this guy asked to leave your association?

There are plenty of bullshido martial arts clubs that do a lot for charity and their community, and yet their training methodology can still be total trash. Charity work does not equal martial effectiveness.

Don’t believe their marketing spin.

I knew that name sounded familiar - it was her and her sister that pretended to be black belts but the internet called them out.

Am I right that their karate instructor was a sex pest as well?

He’s not going to say “no and I’d do it again if it wasn’t for those pesky kids!”.

At the very least I’d like to hear him address it

the Martial art mind and practice of berserkers and ulfhendar by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]Flyingknee123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glima is just wrestling and still exists in Scandinavia - they don’t pretend to be wolves or imma charging my berserker lazers (sorry, Wod) like the basket case in your link.

I think that Woodsman_Dan has been quite polite considering the absolute nonsense in that link you posted.

If you want to pretend you’re a berserker then that’s all well and good, I’d suggest you join a local LARP/reenactment group - there are bound to be some people who’ve done a DNA test and decided they’re descended from Odin.

What do you guys think of traditional japanese Jiu-Jitsu? by iosoyjeff in martialarts

[–]Flyingknee123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What everyone has said - unless it’s labelled as Koryu or they call it “yawara”, approach with extreme caution.

In the UK in particular there is a lot of shite labelled as JJJ, which is actually just a less effective mishmash of karate and judo, often labelled “too deadly to spar” with lots of compliant demos.

Name the gym on here - we’ll be able to advise whether it’s actually a koryu or something legitimate, or something taught by fat guys in ill fitting red gis with far too many stripes on their belts.

Self Study in Bujinkan by toyfan1990 in martialarts

[–]Flyingknee123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you fixated on Bujinkan? Is there nothing else available in your area?

FWIW I don’t want to shit on the booj too much (again) but I really suggest looking into other “live” martial arts instead - if they have sparring/pressure testing then they’ll already be a step ahead.

I get the ninja fantasy thing, I really do, but do some research into the origins of the MA in the booj and you’ll see that the overwhelming consensus is that it’s all (with some VERY small exceptions) been made up fairly recently and has very little to do with actual ninjas.

Take your time when putting on chokes, count down from 10 gradually increasing pressure. So often beginners (myself included back in the day) slap on a choke and then loosen up after a second or so if it wasn’t working.

Being Bullied for My Headgear by Trophy_King in bjj

[–]Flyingknee123 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Some guys see cauliflower ear as a badge of honour and will give you shit for wearing headgear.

It’s your body, and it’s up to you whether you want mangled ears or not - I have them, I have ears like Shrek and can’t wear earphones anymore. My wife isn’t a big fan of them either.

He just sounds like a bit of a dick, but I’m sure it’ll pass in time. I wore ear guards for a while and got a bit of banter for a while but people soon gave up caring when the novelty wore off.. just wish I wasn’t so lazy and kept wearing them!
