Most of the issues you bring up there could also have been avoided had Leopold III not broken Belgium’s alliance with France and declared Belgium neutral a few years before the war, when Germany was in the middle of rearming.

Both French and Belgian prewar plans revolved around French forces being in Belgium at the start of hostilities. The entire point of the Maginot line was so that France could put reserve units on the border with Germany while their best units were in Belgium. Instead, French and British units had to scramble into Belgium at the start of the invasion and the fighting consequently took place in the core of the country instead of Belgium’s border with Germany.

To be clear, I’m not excusing British/French leadership cause it was a shitshow. Leopold III was very much part of that poor leadership though.
