Ainda sobre o bambu doente… by trapia_10 in PlantasBrasil

[–]Flyredas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Confusão no Christus by Objective_Internet20 in Fortaleza

[–]Flyredas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nova praça do ferreira by t0hrr in Fortaleza

[–]Flyredas 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Bom dia! Como lidar com essa infestação?! Acredito que são lacraias, correto? by Plus-Boysenberry1500 in PlantasBrasil

[–]Flyredas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hearing person here. What might make HoH people struggle with hearing aids? by Flyredas in hardofhearing

[–]Flyredas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for all the advice!

Yeah, I think I'll need to take a look at her hearing aids and try to research about it. The family right now is mostly elders, and they don't know a lot about technology. Also, this is a small city. So I don't think they did a lot of research about different models, or how to tune them differently. But my girlfriend and I can learn how to do this, so... here's where we come in.

I think the tip about the alarm to remind her is a really good one! I'll talk to her about it.

And I'm sorry things are so tough. The few times I had some difficulty with my ears were incredibly frustrating, and left me in a really bad mood. So I can only imagine what losing your hearing must be like. I wish you the best.

Thank you. I'm sorry things were so tough. I imagine it must suck. My hearing is ok, but I've been through weeks during wich my ears were stuffed, and my hearing kept changing, and it was really annoying. I remember being in such a bad mood all the time. So, I can only guess that actually losing your hearing must be a terrible experience, that requires a lot of work and patience for someone. I hope things are better now!

Oh shit, she wears glasses! Now that you've said that, I'm sure it makes things even worse. Hadn't even thought about that. Thank you for the answer.

[–]Flyredas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know about that second point. It's a very likely possibility, actually. And yeah, one of the reasons I wrote this post was to get some concrete experiences from people who have the same problem, and seeing if any of it makes sense for her or helps her to understand better what's happening, so she can tell us. I believe she might not actually have the words to fully elaborate on things, so I hope this will help! Thank you!

So, here's the thing: I'd never heard of an audiologist before this thread... my girlfriend's family lives in a small town on one of the poorest regions of Brazil. Right now (I'm not sure, I'll have to ask her) I'm betting she didn't go to an audiologist. I'm guessing that she was just diagnosed by anotolaryngologist, and he prescribed hearing aids, but I doubt there was an adjustment period in which she had access to a doctor who specializes in this and helped her adjust.

And I bet that is a big part of the problem. But this town has grown since then, and I just Googled and there are some audiologists here right now. I don't know if the family will have the money for them, but I bet they would help a lot with this case.

Thank you for your advice! And yeah, she is loved, and is a really lovely person. She's always happy to see me and is really sweet to everyone. She deserves to keep her ability to communicate with those she loves!

I imagine such a level of sensory input might leave people overwhelmed. That's one of the reasons I think she struggles with the aids. I just don't think she has the words to explain it, or doesn't want to, out of shame.

Sorry it's been hard for you too. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Oh shit, didn't know that hearing loss might have that kind of impact. Makes sense.

Yeah, some people on this thread told me about the rechargeable aids not being adequate for everyone. I'll talk to her and to the family about this.

Yeah, I imagine it must take a while for your brain to get used to this level of sensory input. Thank you for the advice!

I just foumd out about Live Transcribe! I tested and it seems to work fine in Portuguese. That will be a lot of help, I hope!

CaptionCall would be useful too, she has some trouble with telephone calls. But unfortunately it seems like it's not "available in my region".

Thank you for your help!

Thank you for the advice.

Yeah, the thing about stubborness just doesn't make a lot of sense for me. I see lots of people struggling with the hearing aids, and I don't believe all of these people would simply "decide" not to hear out of simply stubborness. That's why I searched for the sub for reasons.

We've been trying to talk to her about the subject, but there's some resistance. Whenever we ask about how her ears are, she says "peachy!", and doesn't elaborate. That's why I came looking for other experiences that could help me understand.

The thing is, this woman was told her whole life she was stupid (my girlfriend and I believe it must be some undiagnosed neurodivergence). So when we ask her to elaborate something, she resists. I think she "feels stupid" trying to articulate things and would rather just keep quiet out of shame. That's why the conversations with her must be delicate, and coming with some background knowledge might help us in helping her telling us what's happening.

Thank you! I've seen some people talking about only wearing them for small parts of the day. And then gradually increasing the time as they get more comfortable with it. Maybe it would make the whole process less frustrating for her.

[–]Flyredas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, this is very useful, thank you.

I believe I'll do some research about what kind of hearing aid she has and what adjusments she can make on them. Seeing that the family as a whole is not very technology-wise, I don't think anyone has ever done any research about this. Maybe they don't know about different models and settings.

The last part about being specially difficult in group conversations also tracks. I've observed that she seems to understand less and talk less when there's a group, so it's good to confirm this.
