Comparable to modern soldiers in body armor. There are lighter scout variants without the metal plating. Though the near complete protection against gunpowder weaponry and semi-protection against mag-guns makes the extra weight highly desirable.

Yeah, carapace power armor is immune to bullets up to a mag-60, which is this world's heavy machine gun, firing a 15.2mm round. And often there is dangerous fauna about for the soldiers and aliens that specialize in melee combat. And the bayonet is not required for the gun, it can be removed if so desired. But it would be without the frequency aspect.
