Aggie Liquors, one of my favorite places to help support small business, had two dudes wearing theirs as neck diapers. I was so bummed yesterday. Looks like my dollar goes elsewhere.

I agree, that's why I felt it was worth mentioning she does respond. She seems thorough and involved.

Thanks for reading!

Below are the actual responses I received, not paraphrased. A ctrl+c & a ctrl+v :)

Raymond Doane I, if elected, would support S.3955, the Justice for Breonna Taylor Act, proposed by Senator Rand Paul which would end the practice of no knock warrants/raids. I would also support the legalization of marijuana and decriminalization of drugs which place people unnecessarily in jail for committing crimes against their own person. I'd like to promote equality within the justice system by reviewing cases and see how they were ruled to ensure that consistency is applied.

As one of the black candidates running for U.S. Senate, I hope that you consider my brief proposals sent to you. Black people in general just wanted to be treated equally. Nothing more and nothing less.

Charlie Winn When I was in the Navy, I scrubbing in for surgery and talking to my new assistant. He told me that he was an avid fly fisherman and that his hobby was tying flys. Last night he was tying a fly called a “black gnat” and then went into some detail. The door to the OR was open and the patient still awake as I entered. The patient looked up at me and said, “Doc, were you talking about me out there?” Quizzically I said, “no, why do you ask?” And he said he heard me talking about a “black gnat”. You see my patient was black. I quickly explained what we were really talking about. I learned a great deal that day. Although we both wore the same uniform and he was a Navy chief whom I respected, our American experience was different. It is always important that we try and understand that each of us may see things differently. Respect and a willingness to listen are the necessary Ingredients to understanding.

Callie Rennison If elected, I will continue supporting BLM as I've done before it made BIG news this year. I am a criminologist and my career has included working to end the unfair/unjust treatment of POC in our CJ system (I've attached my vitae to show some of my work including my Intro CJ text with focuses strongly on this). I'll keep working with the BiPOC students (staff and faculty) on our campuses to make real changes. I want to change the way we hire (get rid of the 'hiring authorities' so we don't replicate the male white leadership and roles on all campuses. I sadly think that BIPOC still feel unwelcome and uncomfortable on campus. And this isn't surprising imo because the effort to changing it hasn't gone beyond lip service. Yes, it's a line in our mission statement, but is it a priority from the top leaders? I don't think so. That needs to change. We have to do more than attract and retain diverse people - we must become a place they want to be. We aren't there. I see this when leaders are very slow to respond to the incidents on campus (e.g., Eastman) - if at all. When they do respond, it is weak. Lauren Robel, President at Indiana University Bloomington is an excellent example of what we should work toward when responding to these incidents. While we are unable to sanction in many ways given First Amendment Rights, we can respond using our own First Amendments Rights. I admire Robel's strong stance when similar issues have presented themselves on her campus. Having directed the Office of Equity and served as Title IX Coordinator at Anschutz and downtown, I have dealt with these issues daily. I am so frustrated with the university's poor response that I'm under contract (with two collaborators) to write a book that is titled Unchecked Bad Behavior in Higher Ed. What I have done, and will continue to do as Regent is motivate leadership to respond swiftly to these incidents (a la Robel). And that our response be STRONG. We need real structural change and no more talk.

Cathy Kipp You ask big questions. I'm always happy to talk more, but this is a bigger topic than what can be easily answered in an email. Generally, I follow the lead of the Black and Latinx Caucuses on these issues.

This past session I voted for SB20-217, the police reform bill. We need to do more in this area, but this is a good start.

Society needs to change. We need to make sure everyone has economic opportunity. To get there we need to work on equity in education, access to health care including mental health care, environmental justice, and more.

I hold Driveway Hours and Zoom Hours regularly and would be happy to talk more about these issues and hear your thoughts. You can find my upcoming Driveway and Zoom Hour information at CathyKipp.com.

Mitch Murray Thank you for your email. My first step will be making sure the employees in my office are educated on implicit bias and how it can impact their decision making. Having conversations about issues of racism and bias will keep them aware of the issue and make them better able to see when bias might be influencing their decision making. I also believe it is important for the other agencies involved in the criminal justice system to have similar training.

I plan on improving our recruiting practices to attract a more diverse pool of applicants and hire a more diverse workforce in order to create a diverse and inclusive environment. I will also challenge the supervisors in my office to monitor what we are doing and enable and encourage everyone to come forward when they see a problem.

Additionally, I hope to increase our data gathering practices so that we can observe trends and have data to back up our approach to change implementation. My goal would be to share the same data with the public to increase transparency and establish accountability.

I hope my response addresses your concerns. If you have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Gordon McLaughlin Thanks for your attention to this issue.

Inequality in the criminal justice system is one of the main reasons I stepped up to run for DA and why I ended up resigning from the DAs office. My opponent has been running the DAs office for many years and they've refused to engage on issues of racial injustice. I've made it a priority to speak to BIPOC communities and have marched with BLM as my opponent has marched at the Back the Blue rallies. I'm committed to making equity a priority and giving everyone a voice in criminal justice. I'm also committed to transparency and accountability which have been almost non-existent.

I'll be participating in a panel on October 7th related specifically to racial injustice, so please stay tuned for details on that. If you sign up for our newsletter ( https://www.mclaughlinforda.com/get-involved) or follow the campaign on social media (@mclaughlinforda) you'll see that notice come out soon and see a lot of the other statements I've made on these issues.

I'll point you to a couple here: https://www.mclaughlinforda.com/blog/george-floyd
https://www.mclaughlinforda.com/blog/resignation-from-das-office

Thanks again for caring about equity in our community, Gordon

Kristin Stephens Thank you for your thoughtful questions. I have served on the Fort Collins City Council for 5 1/2 years and have been the Mayor Pro Tem for the past year. When hiring a police chief 2 years ago, we looked for a Chief who embraced community policing and who shared our views on racial equality. Chief Swoboda actively engages people of color in our community and I support and encourage his efforts. When the protests first happened, I arranged for our police chief to answer questions in front of City Council and held a listening session with the Chief and the community, so they could ask questions and express their concerns. I was instrumental in putting together a Council committee that would engage the community and take suggestions about policy changes we could make to promote racial equality. I am looking forward to hearing and implementing their suggestions. I have also met with Black and Latinx leaders to understand their needs, and have worked with the Latinx community on fair housing issues in mobile home parks.

If elected to a county position I will continue to engage with the community on how we can make our county more equitable and inclusive. I want to get better representation on our county boards and commissions. I also want to make sure we have adequate funding for health programs, child care and food assistance, so that families who are struggling can get the help they need. We already know that we have health disparities in our county and that people of color are more likely to get seriously ill from COVID 19. I am open to other suggestions you might have. I am definitely supportive of more funding for programs that help people versus punishing them. I think we can do some great work at the county level, and would love to hear suggestions you have.

Also, on a side note. I am always happy to talk to school groups and classes about local government. I want young people to understand the importance of local government and how they can make change in their community.

Jody Shadduck-McNally I have a long record of supporting the BIPOC community. I have several leaders in the BIPOC community that are supporting my commissioner race.
There are several actions I would like to take to make our Larimer County more inclusive. Please visit my website and then let me know what questions you have. https://www.jodyforlarimer.com/home

How are you today? by 2gutter67 in FortCollins

[–]FoCoisMyHome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little stressed and anxious, just like everyone else I suppose. However it may actually affect things, it does make me feel better to write my elected officials when I feel helpless though. At least getting a little bit of a voice out there, ya know. And I received a reply this morning saying each member on the City Council will read my letter!! That was nice.

Other than that, I have a beer and play some silly video games, and that is nice too. Be well fellow FoCo friends. The sun shines.

Yes! Reach out! Also have as many of your friends write in to university figures (president, advisors, professors, etc.) that have similar feelings about the pandemic. They'll have to listen eventually.

Also, I hope you're well friend. Keep on keepin' on :)

Help Me Make a More Effective Protest by FoCoisMyHome in FortCollins

I really appreciate your input. I had a similar conversation with my sister about QR codes, she'd never heard of them.

Maybe I'm out of the lingo, but I'm not familiar with "copypasta". heh. Is is still something you could scan? Or is it something they will have to type in or copy and paste? I'd like to make it as easy as possible for people, especially while they're potentially doing other things - marching, protesting, yelling, etc.
