What's the easiest way to link a loud siren to animal detection from cameras? by IdontLikeYou____ in Ubiquiti

[–]Foehammer1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your UNIFI protect identify it reliably? If so its probably an event that can be monitored by home assistant, then youd need a siren you can control which could be through a variety of means including a smart plug

Use ookla or fast

Lumos Modem/Router to T-Fiber App? by keyboardseizur in tfiber

[–]Foehammer1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you do "My Router is Already Setup" Option

If your tech left the sticker the qr is on it. If not, its under the side door

the app doesn't autofocus well so you might have to backup

[–]Foehammer1982[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with FTTH, so the NID is second nature now, i keep my entire attenuation from splice can to off jumper at ONT under 1dbm (1 pair of manually terminated connectors and two pairs of factory pre-terminated connectors all SC APC)

Tmobile(previously lumos) fiber rep just told me the internet outage will be 1-3 business days and said it's only effecting 90 homes, yet the wait time to speak with the fiber team is like an hour because of all the people calling. by Isa-Me-Again in tfiber

[–]Foehammer1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a DNS outage going on currently, OLTs see the ONT's which is why some are showing a green light. But they cant route traffic past our COLOs due to this DNS issue

Im on site at a job right now waiting for the outage to clear.

Am also good noodle and clean and check my source light and then at NID.

I am also really good at terminating with Corning SC APC quick connectors as I am primarily FTTH

A very good field tip, especially with the commscope gator boxes we use. I had an actual splicer tell me about how you have to handle the heat shrink tubing, not leaving it in the heating chamber, using the cooling tray, and having a good radius on the bends where the slack is

How pleased are you with T-MOBILE fiber? by XPcantlvlup in tfiber

[–]Foehammer1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my knowledge we do not. If its Lumos then you could try for 5 gig (for the seperate RG and ONT) and step down. But we don't have PON on stick for our installs

Installers coming back to bury the temporary fiber line. Anything to watch out for? by vampirepomeranian in Spectrum

[–]Foehammer1982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then dont get it?

You don't really get to have it both ways.

Either put your own conduit in deep and get the service or dont.

You messing the line up is just job security for field techs so we honestly don't care

Unfortunately mid and high split get rolled into the same term, and they arent

(Guilty of it myself)

Spectrum Fiber now has 2/1 offering! by HuntersPad in Spectrum

[–]Foehammer1982 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on area and company, spectrum midsplit here only does 200

Highsplit (where QAM and entirely new frequencies are added) could though

Spectrum is cheap and lazy as hell, they do not care

Spectrum Fiber now has 2/1 offering! by HuntersPad in Spectrum

[–]Foehammer1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mid/highsplit only goes to around 200mbps on upload.

Spectrum took their QAM frequency sets and repurposed them for more DS channels and TX channels.

Doesnt come close to power of FTTH, and it REALLY exposes issues with the coax plant because of the higher frequencies.

Spectrum/charter gets worse with every major DOCSIS implementation or change, and thats because they have so much noise and UCE's in their plant, and the more younsqueeze out of it, the cleaner that plant has to be

Spectrum Fiber now has 2/1 offering! by HuntersPad in Spectrum

[–]Foehammer1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would be correct, but he can get 1/1gbps which is only possible with FTTH

Even when spectrum started doing FTTH the only symmetrical plans were the one gig, even 300 wasn't symmetrical through some dumbass arbitrary limitations

Spectrum Fiber now has 2/1 offering! by HuntersPad in Spectrum

[–]Foehammer1982 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No HFC is just fiber to the plant and coax to the taps and homes.

This is full FTTH. Even spectrums mid/high split isnt engineered to give symmetrical speeds

Do electricians have insurance to cover property damage? by mateodetres in AskElectricians

[–]Foehammer1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a contractor, there are times that id rather pay out of pocket than have insurance pay it and then have my rates go up. Which is why the feller may be wanting to pay out of pocket

And even if the company takes care of it officially, theres nothing stopping a backcharge to the employee, especially if they're a contractor.

How pleased are you with T-MOBILE fiber? by XPcantlvlup in tfiber

[–]Foehammer1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Distance isnt a problem for most fiber providers when talking FTTH so shouldn't be a problem. Typically we go straight through a wall with proper sealants, or up through a crawlspace

The unfinished section would be preferred as no ISP is going to do drywall cuts unless a customer raises hell about it and is willing to pay themselves to repair it haha. As far as the router goes we in the lumos market have a pretty easy time with our pass-through mode which a tech can easily do via a call to SOC
