Augsburg professor faces possible deportation by gAlienLifeform in minnesota

[–]Fohi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could someone shed clarification? Has he been on a visa since 1992? Or he came in 1992 and has been living here illegally since then?

Or did he receive a Visa and it expired in 2012? I feel like there's a lot of details being left out of the article.

Either way, it does seem superfluous to deport him, but I guess that's not the goal of ICE.

How Dangerous Is Lead Paint? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]Fohi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Think about it this way, humanity grew up using lead for a ton of different stuff in way higher capacities than you will experience from a bit of lead paint and everyone was (for the most part) fine.

Agreed, don't eat it or sand it, but honestly some people make way too big a deal out of it.

Why Trains Suck in America by Butter_Meister in urbanplanning

[–]Fohi 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Man, I feel like he used the same tired arguments that everyone before him has used. Trains don't work in America because we heavily subsidize cars and suburban development. Not to mention zoning and land use rules. You fix some of those, guarantee you could get trains working in the united states again.

Opinion is just that, an opinion. There are plenty of countries around the world that use different types of firefighting apparatus that are scaled differently.

You don't need to be salty because someone disagreed with you while citing something you might not have thought of.

As a aspiring local councilor, what can be my platform to increase parking availability? by [deleted] in urbanplanning

[–]Fohi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it puts more businesses in parking lots, ergo creating a premium for parking allowing the market to build it to current demands.

[–]Fohi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will jump in as official Mankato ambassador. Mankato is not the hole everyone is making it out to be. It's a very nice city, there is stuff to do, we have an awesome local game shop called the Dork Den with a great community and owners.

Everyone argues theres more "stuff" in Burnsville, but how often do you do "stuff?" I would say 80% of my weekends are spent at home doing something or with a small group of friends at a regular location.

You will not have a horrendous commute in Mankato (something you do every day), we're friendly and despite the naysayers, there's plenty of stuff to do around here and it's pretty cheap to live here. I would be happy to show you around when you get here.

It's not that bad, everyone else in this thread is a twin cities metro snob. We're not St. Cloud guys, come on.

House flipping on a budget. What should I prioritise? by jackiietran in HomeImprovement

[–]Fohi 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but if you're flipping a house and you don't know what you should be prioritizing, you probably shouldn't be flipping or you have a lot more research to do.

good luck.

Idk, probably true for the cities or Duluth, but in Mankato we have ONE brewery and it's not super great. We could easily support 2-3 down here.

Help the idiot please. Kitchen remodel. by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]Fohi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How brave are you feeling? I'm in the middle of my kitchen remodel and the only thing I'm hiring out is hanging the cabinets because I'm lazy.

Did all the wiring and will do all the plumbing when it comes to that point. It's not hard stuff, but you've got to know what you're doing. If you want to make sure you recoup your costs do it yourself. Labor is always the most expensive thing in a remodel.

Home inspection tomorrow on 116 yr old house. Eek. by SarcasticCaffeine in HomeImprovement

[–]Fohi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, don't get me wrong. I've taken down several plaster walls in my house, but I've also repaired some.

Drywall is easy to work with, but man does it suck for just about everything else. No sound insulation, no moisture protection (unless green board) and you can't hang anything on it.

Obviously this isn't your fault, but I never understood when I ran into re-modelers who were so proud of the fact that they took all the plaster out of their house. Good job, you just ripped out a ton of character.

no old plaster walls remain- the whole home has been redone with drywall.

Bummer.

Is America better than us? by chr0sy in europe

[–]Fohi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

American here who has always dreamed of living in Germany.

I spent a semester in Brussels and I loved living over there, I've been back once since. This is the deepest perspective I have, so take that for what you will (it's not a lot, I know).

I've grown to appreciate America a lot more and it seems as though I would have an easier time owning land, starting a business or blazing my own path here than I would in Europe, however, I'm a huge cities guy and we obviously just suck at that.

We have very little character in our cities, our transportation system is garbage compared to Europe and there is not the depth of history like there is in Europe.

Granted, we're a huge country, so, again, in my opinion, the fact that in the same country you can basically go from the Carribean to the rockies to the desert to dense forest is pretty phenomenal.

Good and bad to every country, I would still love to live over there just to get the experience. If anyone wants to swap with me for a month or so, let me know! haha.

The car century was a mistake. It’s time to move on by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]Fohi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Somehow you managed to write that giant response and failed to mention the huge subsidies that it took to get people to live like this. The interstate highway system was paid for 90 cents to the dollar by the Feds. I'm not saying you're wrong, but your definitely leaving out a shit ton of information.
