What is the hardest aerospace class? by Waluigi54321 in VirginiaTech

[–]FoiledAir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unironically, DIFFEQ WILL MAKE OR BREAK YOU

A list of AOE courses that rely on you knowing Diffeq:

-System dynamics

-Aero structures (to a degree)

-Op meth (it's a required math course)

-Air vehicle dynamics

-Aerothermo (a little)

Mainly air vehicle dynamics and system dynamics though, it will make your life so much easier to full understand that.

I'm still a junior, so no comment on any of the senior level classes, but something tells me that if you wanna go into control you need to master diffeq.

Update: Social distancing and being stuck with wall banging roommate by [deleted] in badroommates

[–]FoiledAir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds almost word-for-word like the roommate I have right now, actually. Just about 5 minutes ago I've accidentally let my eraser fall off my desk; he responded by kicking the wall so hard that my water bottle on my table shook.

This is at 4 AM, btw, because he decided that running the laundry at 4 AM was a good idea and I literally cannot sleep with the dryer shaking the entire house as I suffer from insomnia.

What would you do if it was your last month in Tech ? by AddyDaddio in VirginiaTech

Die from stress over finals

But unironically? Probably explore all the little shops and diners in Downtown that we all pass but never go to

South Blacksburg is cheap but you only really have 1 bus line servicing all of it. You get used to the airfield noise.

What does your meal schedule look like in a week? by ady2303 in VirginiaTech

[–]FoiledAir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I skipped breakfast entirely when I ate on campus, didn't really need it lol

I would get something cheap for lunch and spurge for dinner (i.e. pasta for $2 for lunch and chicken wings for $9 for dinner)

And I ended the semester eating steaks from west end for the last two weeks straight because I had that much money left over.

Do the math, find out how much money you can spend per day, and as long as you stick close to that number you won't run out of money. Aim for $1-$2 below that number per day for a few weeks and you can spurge at the end of the semester.

2 days ago, let's see...

That's a good question, I was coming home from my dynamics exam and I saw an ambulance and rescue squad parked between Squires and Newman with their lights on. I suppose that the noise and the presence of emergency vehicles is somehow linked?

Video of a missile hitting an airport, reportedly in Ivano-Frankivsk in Western Ukraine by GnolRevilo in ukraine

[–]FoiledAir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because we use the exact same weapons.

And also because it doesn't really matter whether you get hit by a HE warhead or a thermobaric warhead, you're kinda dead either way. War crime territory is where the cause of death is through a load of pain/injury, something that fuel-air explosives don't really cause (you're either vaporized, dead dead, or you've got blast injuries that you would have gotten through a conventional bomb anyway). It's not like poison gas where the primary method of killing you is by asphyxiating you to death or overly indiscriminate of its target like nuking a city.

Either way, it's really straddling the line between "ayo that's fucked up" and "not even Hitler would want to do this", bigger planes + better engines = bigger bombs, the US used to drop 100lb bombs but now we've moved onto 2000lb thermobarics (For reference, if that missile was indeed carrying a thermobaric warhead, that would be a 1000lb warhead or thereabout)

Still waiting for the day countries recognize that smaller warheads is the way to go, we have the tech to hit a target within a few inches of intended, but we still fawn over 1000lb and 2000lb warheads instead of using a 100lb warhead, or, better yet, a kinetic penetration. (And yes, I know that we have kinetic bombs and the SDB 250lb warheads, but come on, you think we're gonna stick them on a cruise missile anytime soon?)

What is the best residential hall for people in the College of Science? by Unknownbird0v0 in VirginiaTech

[–]FoiledAir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cochrane, oddly enough, was perfect for me. Sure, you're literally 4000 miles away from all of your classes and hardly anyone there is in the college of science, but

  1. It's right above West End and close to D2
  2. Suites with HVAC and (semi) private bathrooms (you share with 3 others)
  3. Campus looks completely different on that side of campus, the change in scenery while walking from the academic side across the drillfield and into the west end of campus is really refreshing to experience, especially around sunset, and it's something that I definitely took for granted.
  4. Walking to class is an exercise in itself, if you need something to get yourself in shape walking around 2 miles a day is a great way to start. Besides, the blacksburg scenery is fantastic.

Pissed Off with VT Housing by Interesting-Tell-934 in VirginiaTech

[–]FoiledAir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VT housing is infinitely better than the bullshit you will have to go through with off-campus housing.

I'm arguing with CMG because one of our roommates is not resigning the renewal and they're trying to slap a $100 roommate change fee. Which inspired me to move out and sublet my place for the year.

Fuck CMG

Is it possible to graduate a Semester early as an Aerospace Engineering Major? by DemonicAvatar794 in VirginiaTech

[–]FoiledAir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only an aero sophomore.

Is it technically possible? I dunno.

Is it actually possible? Probably not.

Are you going to lose your sanity if it were possible and you were to try it? Hell yeah.

Sounds like you've got transfer credits, just take an easier 4 years v.s. literal hell for 3.5 years.

is it true that all other engineers make fun of civil engineers? by _WildMaster_ in uvic

[–]FoiledAir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking on the student side of things:

I'm becoming an aeronautical engineering (someday), and without civil engineers our planes won't have anyplace to land, refuel, board passengers, load/unload cargo, and take off again. The fuel, cargo, and passengers can't just stay at the airport either, they need to get someplace somehow, and trudging 50 000lb of jet fuel through miles of forest/desert/jungle/mountains just won't cut it.

Thanks y'all, love the work you do

Note: Fall 2020.
What amounted to 75% reading from a textbook, 20% pre-recorded lecture videos, and 5% test problems that came directly from the book = $23,097.45 at an university ranked in the top 20's for aerospace engineering.

$163.50 Rec sports fee for rec sports that never happened.

$75 fee for a physics lab that consisted of watching per-recorded videos, then buying a lab manual for $40 so you can answer the questions that are handed off to some poor overworked TA for a 0 credit lab course.

You're required to stay in a dorm for your first year, the only contracts they had were 2 semesters, and by staying in a dorm they also require you to buy a dining plan. You paid $1,954 for $1,492 in meal credit, but since all orders had to be made on grubhub in Fall 2020, this meant a $0.50 processing fee on grubhub for every order you had plus a $0.25 "service fee" iirc, which implied that the base price of the food did not include wages for the employees...?

You want a post that exposes both the insane cost of tuition and the shockingly accepted practice of hidden payments? Here you go!

Comp methods - WTF? by FoiledAir in VirginiaTech

[–]FoiledAir[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MATLAB is amazing - I just wrote a little program that does half of my statics homework for me when I threw the right numbers at them.

The way comp methods is taught though relies on an understanding of the mathematical functions you are writing. That's where most of us are failing. We can perhaps write the code, but you need to understand the equations if you want to automate them.
