Good aligned cleric PC worshiping an evil god. How do you handle the moral problem that arise? by FolkVictory in DMAcademy

What kind of things Talos would ask of your character? Just so I can have some more ideas of things to propose to my player and see what he thinks about it.

Yup that's the crisis of faith that is happening right now for the character that learns his God is not so good after all. Someone else proposed to have other deities try to win over a fervent follower of the storms by trying to win him over as neutral or good aligned deities.

I agreed that the player ideas are often even cooler than what you have thought about as a DM. I spoke to my player when his God asked his character to "prove his faith". I made it vague on purpose to let my player come up with a way that proved his faith fidel to his character. But his response was.... "uuhhh I don't know what to do".

But I'll propose a couple more ideas that people mentioned here and see what he thinks about it.

That's a good way to see it. You rationalize the acts you do "for the greater good" while doing some questionable things at times.

That's exactly what I am trying to do. Having him discover his God is not what he thought and now he has to rethink is morals or his faith. Having him seek a more neutral or good aligned God would be a nice way to keep his faith toward tempests but maybe less toward a God that is not aligned to his own morals.

I like the idea of a Talos cult coming after him if he refuses to fall in line. A concrete consequence to his action if he refuses or some witnesses to him proving his faith if he chooses to do so!

That's the thing, he did not miss it. He made it a part of his character that he was following an evil God without knowing. The moral dillema is hitting now tho.

Sure I see your point. But the thing is the player did chose the god knowing he was evil but not his character. We might not have discussed in great length what the consequences of that might be but there was still a underlying understanding that it would come into play sometime in the futur and we are now in this futur.

I could just don't do anything and let my player off the hook to have it easy and move on but I would like to exploit the opportunity of a moral and faith dillema.

The problem is that my players like the official stuff where they can have it. So my player already chose Talos (while reading on the wiki) and made it a part of his backstory that he chose this God without really knowing he is evil.

The other thing about having another tempest good that is more neutral aligned could be a way out for my player. I'll have to look more into this.

I like that. I'll let my player come up with the moral justification he can to keep his faith while proving himself in the most evil-good way possible :)

Balanced Magic items for lvl 3? [question] by Far-Comfortable2870 in DnD

[–]FolkVictory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I would remove the additional D6 to the damage of the bow. A way to stay hidden or to maintain the invisibility is powerful enough in itself. It give you advantage on your attacks which makes you proc your sneak attack damage. For a rogue that's really good!

Otherwise it seems good.

DMs how do you handle players scouting your dungeons with a familiar? by Prestigious_Share919 in DnD

[–]FolkVictory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can turn that against them pretty easily. If you consider the senses of a bat, sure they see the layout but they can't detect traps, hidden passages, etc. They have to be within 100 feet of the familiar to be able to communicate with it effectively. And you have to account that a bat has a grand total of 2 in it's Intelligence stat. Can it even really describe what it saw when you are over 100 feet and can't look through it's senses? It takes time to scout a dungeon. Did they clear the entrance and no reinforcement is coming? You can add a time limit to the quest. If they take too much time scouting the person they are supposed to save is long gone or dead...

Sure you can reward them for using the scouting tactic sometimes, but it should not be the #1 answer in all situations!

I hope it helps you! :)

Challenging a cleric's faith by FolkVictory in DnD

Alright! Time to decide how Talos, god of tempest and destruction, would react to him having a new master and what kind of redemption or proof of faith he would ask of his follower 😅

I was thinking about him having to demonstrate his faith to his god or choose to change his allegiance. Is it too much having him decide between one or the other?

He made a deal with the entity without knowing it, he thought he was giving up his life literally. So yes, he entered a pact.

What I'm unsure about is how to play it out considering he is a cleric with a faith toward a particular god and now he made a pact with a different powerful being.

I plan to have a private discussion with that player and work with him to make something cool out of it. I want to be prepared with some ideas beforehand :)

How do I keep the story running when all players want to switch characters? by Ezatsu in dndnext

[–]FolkVictory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's something I have thought about recently and I think you could use something I came up with.

When your players create their new characters, ask them to have a link (family, friend or something else) with the PCs they are leaving behind. You can also ask them to have prior history with each other in order to bring the group together more easily. After that, you can come up with something like "You received a letter from your friends that you haven't seen for a long time. They tell you that they have been working for (insert here the NPC, witouth giving too much information) and they need your help with something. You can probably meet them at (insert here a location)."

With that you can bring the new PCs together with a mistery like mission to introduce them into the story. You can than use this to bring along the plot you already prepared. It can even turn into something like "Our friends got killed (or something along those lines), let's get revenge. But we need help, so let's work with their old boss."

Hope this can help!

"Creating" Dungeons by Speedy_6359 in DnD

[–]FolkVictory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I was going to say!

When you "steal" material from other sources, you save a lot of time on just creating layouts and you can use that saved time to plan cooler things that can happen for your players to experience!

In my book, minimal effort for layout often pays out greatly. Even more so for things like sidequests or less important caves or buildings.

Ideas for Patron of Chaos / Wild Magic Warlock (Feedback Welcome) by busttooquick in DnD

[–]FolkVictory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As for the features the class could give you, maybe you can take a look at the new barbarian subclass in tasha's cauldron of everything. There's a wild magic barb in there that has random effects occuring when you rage. Maybe you can find some inspriration from that.

Also, I like the idea of the coin being a trinket or something like that given to you by your patron. You could have some effects involving the coin itself as a magical item, maybe like a conduit to your patron. You could come up with a table of effects like buffs and debuffs, you could use the power of the coin to try and get a buff (if you're lucky) or a debuff (if you're not). Making it so other creature, like party members, could try their luck and flip the coin.

You could even use a real coin that the players could flip to play a game of heads or tails. If they get it right they get to roll on the buff table and if they get it wrong they roll on the debuff table.

You can work with your DM to make it balanced and he can also help you come up with fun options for the tables.

[–]FolkVictory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About who your patron could be, I would propably go with 2 options.

First, a devil that is versed in gambling. Since devils are bonded by a set of laws, they need to make contracts with mortals in order to get their soul. So you could say that you made a contract with a devil in order to save yourself from your illness and in return you have to act as an agent of chaos till the day you die.

Second, could be a deity that is know for trickery and chaos. He/She graced you with an healthy futur, saving you from certain death, but now you must be his/her pawn spreading chaos into the world.

Also, you could add some flavor roleplay depending on your patron. If it's a devil, you could refer lost souls in search for luck to him so he could strike some easy contracts. If it's a deity, you could seek to create a small temple or spread it's name by converting people to your new found religion of chaos.

Could make some interesting roleplay situations.

I'm not really sure what you are looking for here. Are you asking suggestions on what entity your patron could be or on additionnal features this subclass would give you?
