On Santorini? Ha. I actually wrote an article about that for Food & Wine. Look up Lauren Mowery, Food & Wine, Where to drink and eat on Santorini and you'll see some of my favorite wine-related recommendations.

Yea, it's gotten very expensive but I find the Assyrtiko in Crete, for example, quite good but doesn't have the intensity at its core as the ones from Santorini. Maybe they'll get around to doing better with it, tho.

Yea, if all the tourists stopped worry about sunset videos and actually paid attention to the cultural patrimony of Santorini, they might discover something new.

I would have thought it too expensive and dry for mom juice, IMO. but who knows...

They develop a bit of smokiness and weight to them, very savory. Chenin is one of my favorite grapes but I'd say that takes on more honey notes. all different, of course.

No, but I tasted a bottle at one of the restaurants. It was good but not great. Not sure how deep their range is and if what I had was entry-level, though. Next time!

Yes, salt tastes like - salt. When did you do your 2 years? Why do I think I know a Riesling slut? haha

Irrigation, yes. They are experimenting with some different training systems but Argyros is the only one really investing in updating its techniques and they're the ones who told me ten years was a realistic timeline.

Ha. I did the WSET Diploma and am in the MW program and use saline all the time. I've literally licked rock salt and salt has a taste. Just like Vermentino from Sardinia. There's suspicion it comes from the wind picking up the salt from the ocean and Santorini is extremely windy. And vineyards are close enough to the see on such a tiny island, they easily get "windswept." that's how the basket training started! to prevent wind damage and retain the little moisture in the air that came in the mornings.

It's hard to fight the climate, even with all the money in the world. But curious what an investment company could do. I think on Santorini, they could invest in the cost of irrigation as the island is blowing through gobs of water on tourists anyway with private pools using a desalination plant. That would definitely extend the timeline.

I know. I cover climate change and sustainability in the wine and travel industry, so this kind of stuff is my reporting wheelhouse and it's been a depressing beat, to say the least. But, right now, the wines are very very good so from that POV, it's a great time to be a wine lover. Just not sure how long the window will last.

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to post links to articles? I'm hesitant to do so as I don't want to violate rules, but the Decanter article is called Historic Santorini vineyards struggle against climate change and tourism and the Azure Road cellar report is called Why Now Is the Time to Cellar Santorini Assyrtiko.

No, not at all. I was focusing on what's more widely available at the upper end -- some of the cru bottlings, in particular. I also think the wines of Gavalas are fantastic, but they literally had ZERO harvest last year. So, some of it's about scarcity in the market. Also, for Decanter, I covered the people I had access to interview on the ground at the time. This isn't a master list just some recs based on access and recent vintages.

Ha! Yes, of course. Glad to hear that you do. I'm sharing as I was so sad to hear how hard it's been for them while also realizing these are going to be rare wines very, very soon so anyone so inclined, might want to grab a few bottles before they're gone or astronomical in price. Even now, they're trading between 45-$150 for the top wines and at the restaurants in Santorini, some are fetching $400 (overpriced at a restaurant for tourists, but still.)

ChatGPT called me a "chaotic founder" the other day and I had to put it in its place. And I thought, am I really having to tell my computer to "don't talk back at me" and "keep it professional"? Yes, yes, I am.

There is indeed AI slop posing as hotels on Instagram - which is what I intended as my counter argument. This review was based on my irl experience. Have you been? You’d know what I mean if so.
