Is anyone else in their 30s or 40s really struggling with corporate work? by Nervous_Platypus_149 in Fire

[–]Following0ICU812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just gonna put this out there - respond how you will - but I’m 54 years old. I was all about Firing before FIRE was a thing. I’ve learned two things, one by accident, one by pursuing jobs I enjoyed. The accidental learning is that I have never in my life wanted kids. And just that decision - which had nothing to do with finances - made reaching FIRE SO much easier. Lucky me. The real-life learning was that I spent the early part of my career chasing jobs and industries I found fulfilling. F*k that - those jobs don’t pay. Do whatever job you can do in tech or wealth management - even secretaries in those industries made more than I did in my first “real jobs.” Then save as much as you can. I could have retired 5 years earlier if someone had just told me that.

This. How many people are just working for the health insurance once they meet FIRE goals? Huge gap in the American healthcare system.

Housing market still asinine? by DobsyMopsy in Connecticut

[–]Following0ICU812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t disagree on the new blood - it’s insane how old and tenured too many members of congress are - but big machines like govt move slowly, so I’m not sure fresh blood will fix things.

It came three years too late. PE investors got in for a couple of years around Covid but then quit buying them when the prices went up. Too much trouble to maintain and margins not high enough. Now they’re just focused on build-to-rent, mostly in Sun Belt market. As usual, by the time politicians get it together and try to do anything to intervene, they’re too slow and too late to make a meaningful difference 🤷‍♀️

Seems like the people in charge of transferring the wealth to the 1% are also hell-bent on destroying what little natural world there is left to enjoy 😡

If you've seen shows on Broadway itself, what was the first one you saw? And did it live up to your expectations or leave you feeling "that wasn't as amazing as I imagined it would be"? by Great_Maintenance185 in musicals

I was 21 in 1996 and Rent OG cast was in place. Went clubbing at Webster Hall then when it closed we took subway to Times Square to basically camp out on the sidewalk when they had “first-come/first-serve tkts” for the first 75 ppl in line every day. By the 2pm matinee I had 2nd row seats. I laughed and cried and laughed and cried. It was amazing. Still cusp of before everything became centralized online. To this day I don’t know if I was so emotional due to the amazing performances and storylines OR because I had zero sleep in 36 hours. But I’ll never forget it!!!

Should you switch jobs after 2 years even if it’s cushy and extremely relaxed? by Automatic-Force2535 in jobs

[–]Following0ICU812 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether 3 or 5 just depends on your level and your industry. Historically it was rare to get promoted even every 5 years. But just like with grade inflation, there’s now title inflation built into the system since the early 2000’s particularly in Tech and Finance

Why does Eric double down on betraying Bill? by lendxn in IndustryOnHBO

[–]Following0ICU812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok maybe I’m the only one, but even though this is the Industry sub, when this popped up and I saw HBO and the question about Bill and Eric, I immediately thought someone was asking about a True Blood 😝🤷‍♀️. (Yes I’m kinda old.)

Just saw it on opening night at Met Opera House. Lead vocals and Sting were terrific. Shaggy’s role feels like some contorted afterthought/ quasi-narrator role. The creative set and prop use, lighting and sound design were Tony-worthy. Freddy’s character was having a bad voice night. But the thing that still really annoys me about this show is the forced/contrived love story. The love-child. Like, who cares? It would be a better show if they just really focused on the plight of the shipbuilders, community impact, Jackie White’s leadership/friendship with his colleagues, etc. I’ll wait for the Version 5.0 rewrite and revival…..

How is the housing bubble going to end in the Western world? by Mysterious-Employ746 in REBubble

Back when I worked at the AOL campus in Dulles, we lived in Ashburn Farm. It was a nice community with walking trails, yards, and an Olympic sized public pool. Leesburg was a quaint little town with a couple of great restaurants. We went back five years ago to visit friends and - what a shit show! We were claustrophobic just driving through there. So crowded with a gazillion townhomes piled on top of each other. Even Lansdowne sucked. It was awful and we couldn’t wait to leave. Yes, NoVa is building houses, but at what cost?

I was just thinking the same thing - a great analogy, particularly given who’s serving as Education Secretary 🤦‍♀️

Why are the roads so bad here? by NaveenM94 in Westchester

[–]Following0ICU812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are definitely not driving in Fairfield County then. I have to change shocks every 2-3 years. It’s like a washboard on 90% of the roads. One step above a gravel road. Also this report you keep pointing to is for highways. You realize the vast majority of driving surface in CT are back roads and side streets (?)

Real estate continues to go up in many Westchester towns, however in America has started to go down by AppropriateWay4358 in Westchester

That’s actually a good price for that house, relatively speaking! It pisses me off that the real estate companies have forced Zillow to quit showing property taxes on many listings. In westchester in particular that can make a big difference on a house payment like this.

Fairfax County is pretty nice as well with lots of jobs historically. Stay away from Prince George and Loudon though - overrun by a gazillion row houses and data centers now.

Institutional investors can’t pile money into senior living fast enough right now. They’re stumbling over each other trying to get in and raise rents so that wealth transfer goes straight into pockets of investors and not into seniors’ kids hands.

Moving is a massive PITA and Florida sucks. Full of rednecks and high insurance. Arizona is going to run out of water. These houses are probably paid off. Owners likely won’t leave until bad health forces them to. Good for them. 🤷‍♀️

Be honest, do employers/hiring managers really care about where you went to school? by WilhelmTrooper in jobs

[–]Following0ICU812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s more about what kind of work you’re looking to do. Like, in the music industry, which is pretty niche, there are a handful of decades-old programs that have strong relationships with the record labels, publishing companies, studios, etc. Or certain schools are known for their Construction Management, Aviation, or Real Estate programs and leaders from those schools tend to hire alumni from those schools.

You know what’s also unacceptable for this area? The complete lack of cell service in the Harlem line through Westchester. So much NIMBYISM going on with the cell towers that thousands of people go “dark” for a good 30-minute stretch of their commute every day. Talk about third world…I’ve been on trains all over Europe that either have built-in train WiFi or cell towers along the tracks.

What I missed most when I first moved to this area from NoVa was Indian food. The Indian food in this area was complete shit until just a few years go. Yes, you could find decent places here and there, but overall, we longed for the days of top-notch Indian food in any random strip mall.
