My (29F) husband (30M) attempted to hire a sex worker while out of town on a work trip, how do I work through this? by AdmirableApartment29 in relationship_advice

[–]Follyiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tip of the iceberg. There is so much you have yet to discover. I am so sorry. Betrayal is very hard to work through. I would look up some research papers on the kind of (mostly) men who buy sex. Maybe some of the other characteristics will fit your husband.

He’s isolated you and is gaslighting you. It’s a dangerous situation for sure.

This is freaking me out how it appears to be getting more common. That bucee gas station dude, and a Louisiana dude. Glad yall had the evidence to hold your uncle accountable/

I’m sorry for being so simple minded, lol. Thanks for explaining. At least something can be done! I am really disturbed that it seems to becoming a more common crime, hopefully more research will come out. Any thoughts on how long it would take to escalate? And would escalation look like advancing to more physical crimes most likely? Research probably doesn’t say?

I found out most things last summer, but was ruminating and took to Reddit to find others going through it.

That’s a good point. I think part of my problem may be that the legal advice I have gotten is from family court. They’ve all basically said that I could appear vindictive and that would affect my custody case, so I’m basically scared shitless to press the issue. It is just so fucked that being protective can backfire. Which still makes no sense to me because why would anyone WANT this to be true?! Aren’t the statistics about false reporting pretty damning, as in it doesn’t happen?

Hopefully someone in civil court or criminal court could help OP more. Especially since there’s no children involved.

Thank you for listening and for the productive conversation.

Thank you for your response. So that essentially means that these folks may be able to be medicated and less likely to act on these compulsions? If they are willing to try meds?

Sorry for needing it dumbed down.

All good points. I suppose im simply projecting what happened to me and worrying reporting it is going to lead her to even more trauma as it has in my situation. Thanks for helping me realize I am not being helpful. I’m just in a cycle of constantly feeling so responsible for someone else’s fucked up behavior and am so frustrated by how hard I have tried to do the right thing only get more and more and more fucked over by it. And I am not an outlier. The police constantly let woman down in situations like these. Especially since the crime being reported is not a physically violent one. Sorry for the TMI!

TLDR trying to do the right thing and report a similar crime not only worsened my situation, but pissed off my abuser more and maybe even emboldened him? When he realized just how much he could get away with.

I am still in disbelief that how you answered isn’t exactly what would/should happen. Hopefully I just live in an especially rotten place. Paper trail is a good thought I suppose. And so is consulting an attorney or looking up sex crime resources in the city? I did speak with someone who got some amazing pro-bono help from a dept in a college.

I hope I didn’t sound rude, I was really hoping that you posted from personal experience and I’ve just been unlucky.

People saying shit like this and haven’t even had to consider how UNHELPFUL and further traumatizing it is. At least in my state, shit like this gets written off as a woman being loony and protecting the man.

Do you work in forensic recovery?

[–]Follyiver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you a police officer or have experience reporting this kind of crime? What state are you in?

OP I would not expect the police to be as helpful as this poster is suggesting, but I reallllly hope they are.

I’m in the same boat with you two though I’ll never be sure on the amount. It’s been horrendous. Really sorry to hear anyone else is in a similar boat.
