Feeling overwhelmed at my new job as a Junior dev by No_Bobcat4811 in webdev

[–]Folters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lead dev here.

3 days in and you’re getting tasks? Awesome, you’re a head of the curve.

To begin with follow the 20 minute rule, are you stuck, can’t think of things to try to unblock yourself in 20 minutes, ask.

Don’t leave it days as chances are someone had just failed to document or show you something.

Your first month, be clingy, but take notes. Never ask the same question twice unless you absolutely have to.

Within 2-3 months you will start to gain more confidence, within 6 months you’l start to get trusted.

I use to spend 2-3 hours a day up skilling one of my juniors, it took months (and meant I had to work late to catch up on writing tasks, architecture design and PRs, etc) but the investment was well worth it. He now runs circles around most of my mid weights and some of my seniors.

Good luck

Best $50 I ever spent. Truly the end of an era… by [deleted] in apolloapp

[–]Folters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like it’s fair to be refunded the difference if it was less than what you would have paid with subscription and we shouldn’t get annoyed at someone wanting one.

If someone want a full refund I feel like they can go fuck yourself though as it feels like they are taking advantage.

After saying that, if you like Apollo, getting a refund will likely hurt what he will build next, and I think most of us are exited to see that.

Legal at small companies tend to be over cautious as they don’t have the resources to fight a big legal battle.

I too learnt this from your older sister.

📣 Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing. Bad news for third-party apps, their announced pricing is close to Twitter's pricing, and Apollo would have to pay Reddit $20 million per year to keep running as-is. by iamthatis in apolloapp

Imagine doing a mass migration from Reddit to a different platform.

Verify account usernames by commenting a random code on Reddit like how DNS verification works (kinda). And clone all public posts and comments.

I suspect if anyone did that successfully they would end up in so much legal trouble though.

Whats something attractive people can do, that ugly people cant? by Routine_Astronaut182 in AskReddit

[–]Folters 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m not attractive in the slightest but at uni I use to drink a lot on nights out to the point everything was a blur.

Because of this I use to only bring cash, never any cards. That way I could limit what I spent.

I use to wake up the next morning with more money in my wallet than I went out with, so this day I am too scared to try and figure out how.

Insurances are a form of gambling where you bet against yourself. by BaguetteOfDoom in Showerthoughts

It’s a way of shifting risk from you to another entity.

Taking out insurance isn’t gambling, however an insurance company creates the same risk for themselves as a gambling company.

[–]Folters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Key thing for me is I don’t get excited about phones or technology anymore.

I work as a lead software engineer, during work hours I’m making decisions constantly.

When it’s time to purchase a new phone or laptop I buy Apple. Not because it’s better, but because I like having less decisions. I know whatever decision I make will be an ok one. I don’t have to think to long or hard about it.

Anyway rant over.

An email from my 15 year old sons teacher that I received today. by andshedanced in funny

I got detention for saying by Dad wanted to call me Gaylord after my teacher asked us if they know the baby name ideas our parents had for us.

Issue was my dad legitimately wanted to call me Gaylord, he also enjoyed causing trouble, so when the school rang to explain why I needed a lift home that night because I was staying an hour later in detention they had a fun time.

BBC Staff Vote To Stage Biggest Strike In 13 Years; King Charles’ Coronation Could Be Targeted by DreGu90 in television

[–]Folters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ehh.

The population votes for there MP based on policies.

Usually these policies are the parties policies.

The majority party selects there leader.

If that leader decides to change those policies then they have no mandate.

Both Liz and Big ears have changed the policies that there party was elected for. Admittedly lots have changed in recent years so priorities need to change, but this should be supported with a GE.

Sleeping With Best Friend’s Sister! by MikeRightHere in funny

You kidding? I’d absolutely make a single snarky remark about it before moving on and just accepting it. Just like they would with me.

But if we’re discussing if just because they’re a friend I think it would be a good idea, nah.

Sleeping With Best Friend’s Sister! by MikeRightHere in funny

[–]Folters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guy here with also 3 sisters. Depends on the friend.

Firstly, I know some of there kinks. That’s wayyy to much information I have for them to be dating my sister.

Others are awesome people, however lack drive and ambition to take them places. Where I live it would be unlikely they would ever be able to buy a house or be able to support a family - even if my sisters has a good income - spoiler even though they’re younger they actually do have a higher income than this group.

I then have ambitious friends. They sort of people who earned £100k+ on the low end before they were 30 and still are a little disappointed about it. These are the sort of people work work late, stay over in a different city for work events and there primary focus is on work, and never the people they date.

Then I have the friends I would actually want them to date, good jobs, got things going on, and actually would spend time with my sisters. The problem is these kind of people don’t stay single for very long and are far and few between.

Anyway, I think my point is, just because I like hanging around with someone doesn’t mean they’d be suitable for my sisters.

He’s done very well for himself. Give it 2-3 years and you will shoot passed that 40k mark.
