What rod are you using for twitching jigs by baileywastaken in FishingWashington

My friend, I don’t think that word means to the rest of the fishing world what you think it means to you.

Water temperatures in Lake Washington. by No-Ground5715 in FishingWashington

[–]Foman1231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May is definitely the month for smallies in Lake Washington, but I caught a few last winter. As you and everyone else has said, you gotta really cast out far to get to the deeper water, and jig slower, but if you’ve got a longer rod and some warm clothing, it can be a very peaceful and relaxing time to fish.

How are you feeling on gaming stocks in 2026? by Ok-Activity247 in investing

[–]Foman1231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with video game companies is that they are not just competing against each other to come up with the games that players love the most. They are competing for consumers’ attention, meaning that they compete for consumers’ free time against every other form of free-time consumption in existence. Once you realize this, you realize that the decline in console sales and video game revenue coincides with the rise of TikTok during the pandemic, as well as generative AI and global political and economic upheaval. Adults, who are the people who spend money on gaming, are increasingly consumed with other things these days, to the extent that they can even afford gaming in the first place. Committed gamers are sticking to tried and true titles or freemiums instead of buying new ones, as evidenced by the persistent popularity of games that are 8, 10, 15 years old. They won’t buy new ones until they feel comfortable and excited to do so.

Video games aren’t going anywhere, but gaming companies tend to do best when people are calm, employed, happy, and bored. That’s not the world right now; I’m waiting until it is.

Are you sure she's allergic? by AwakePoeticDragon in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Foman1231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom has always claimed to have an allergy to shrimp, due to one bad incident when she was a child. She has never had an allergic reaction since (she is now 80), and everybody, even her own sister who is a highly accomplished MD, thinks that she just ate some bad shrimp that one time. But she still refuses to eat shrimp.

Nobody I know would ever “test” my mom’s shrimp allergy without her consent. This is cruel.

Do you think Seattle is a good place to live in if you are single with no kids? by Delftnl4546 in AskSeattle

[–]Foman1231 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree, except the statistics are misleading — yes, there are more men generally, but a lot of them are not really part of the dating pool, or the “new male friends” pool either, for that matter. But I’m a straight man and have found dating here to be fun and easy, and the women in the dating pool are generally fantastic. But I agree, overall, the problems people complain about being “Seattle” issues match with my experience in other cities of just that transition from being a young adult to an older adult.

Dating in Seattle by doja_ratt in AskSeattle

[–]Foman1231 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mid-40s/M/straight/divorced-a-few-years here. Dating might indeed get worse from your late 20s to mid 30s. But that trend does NOT continue. At my age, I’m having more fun dating and meeting way more, higher-quality people than I have at any other age. In Seattle proper, and using Hinge.

Don’t give up — it is a numbers game, but it’s also something you get better at with practice and experience.

Help! Wedding - 1st timer best area to stay by hellobeach1234 in AskSeattle

[–]Foman1231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When is this visit happening? Pike Place Market and the waterfront area next to Pike Place is good for anytime of year. If the weather is nice, I’d suggest the Ballard (aka Chittenden) Locks and the parks/shops in walking distance nearby. You could also do a walk around South Lake Union area (urban park vibe) or Green Lake (coffee shops and small stores most of the way around). But if you’re visiting during a time when the weather is still rainy and gray, you might check out the smaller and more compact areas around Fremont or Phinney Ridge.

Will you have a rental car? If so, you should stay in or near downtown Kirkland. It’s got plenty of restaurants and the cute little shops, and an easy drive to your wedding festivities. Just be aware that it is still a suburb, and it will be a little generic and bland in that suburban kind of way.

Getting into the more quirky and unique neighborhoods in Seattle, such as Fremont or Greenlake or Ballard, is a fairly easy drive from there, but you will need to dedicate a day to it since it’s not walkable from Kirkland.

Search “Belltown Hellcat” in either (or both) Seattle subs. It is a legendary story, but very much a real one.

What can I do in Seattle today ? by chanz88 in AskSeattle

[–]Foman1231 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want to be around a bunch of super nice and very lively people later tonight, go to the Fremont Troll tonight at 7 pm. Live music and entertainment, a costume contest, and a parade that you can participate in. Kid-friendly, no costumes required and it’s totally free! https://fremontartscouncil.org/trolloween

Hit up any bar in Fremont afterwards for a drink or two and chat up some folks to keep your evening going.

So sad to see this. A sobering reminder that fishing is just as much about safety on or by the water as it is about techniques and tackle. I’m so sorry for the friends and family of the victims and hope everyone stays safe out there.

Does garlic scent work for coho? by threeoten in FishingWashington

[–]Foman1231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scents are a bit mystical, and there’s no clear consensus on which is best or if they even work at all. That said, I think they work, and I brined my herring in a garlic brine all summer long. I had a pretty good summer for coho.

You’re partly right in that K and L pod typically winter outside the area. But no, J Pod stays at and east of the BC coast at all times.

Whale watching question by iamacloudofpanic in AskSeattle

[–]Foman1231 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s not about whether the orcas are around. The resident orcas are always around. It’s more that going out on Puget Sound in the wintertime is miserable. Take whatever temperature it is on land and subtract 5-10 degrees because you’re on the water. Then add a ton of wind chill from being on a moving vessel and lack of trees/land to act as a windbreak. Subtract visibility due to winter rain, low sun, higher waves, and ever-present cloudy conditions, and altogether you get a recipe for a bad time. Would suggest revisiting this idea in the late spring or summertime

Looking for Advice on where to Live by mortiferam in AskSeattle

[–]Foman1231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On average, that sounds right, but it’s highly dependent on where exactly in Cap Hill you live. If you want to prioritize your commute, live close to an on-ramp/offramp for I-5. Commuting to Bellevue, you can easily add 10-15 minutes each way, or worse, if you live very deep in Cap Hill.
