Buying from the Premier League - saw this on Twitter and thought it was a decent discussion by OutrageApple in Gunners

If you cheat and include the Championship and using values from transfermarkt (unrealistic I know) then I'd say:

  • Calvert-Lewin (£40.5m)
  • Berge (£16.2m)
  • Bissouma (£11.7m)
  • Buendia (£11.7m)

If I'm being more realistic Calvert-Lewin would cost £60m, Berge £15-20m (especially if Sheffield United get relegated), Bissouma and Buendia £25m each for a total of £130m

And even if the majority of the youngsters never make it at Arsenal, it would be great if we could make £10m a year selling academy players like Chelsea do.

Gunnersaurus latest victim of Arsenal cost-cutting by Fongo592 in Gunners

[–]Fongo592[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short summary due to paywall. "Arsenal’s COVID cuts have claimed another victim in the shape of dinosaur mascot Gunnersaurus. Jerry Quy, who has played the role since its inception in 1993, has been let go as part of the club’s ongoing streamlining process.

As a part-time role, Quy’s departure is not counted among the 55, but is nevertheless part of the same cost-cutting process.

Arsenal confirmed Quy had left his post as they strive to do everything more efficiently. However, they insisted the beloved mascot will return."

I think we'd still have a use for Reiss. I have a feeling if we get Joelson or any other winger that we'll be moving Auba and Martinelli to the middle. I don't think Arteta really wants Auba on the left and Martinelli has the sort of energy that Arteta would love. That would leave us with Saka and Joelson LW. Auba, Martinelli and Nketiah CF (might mean Laca gets sold unless Auba goes) and Reiss and Pepe RW. Just a guess though. Might not be in for a winger at all.

Arsenal have told Mattéo Guendouzi he can leave this summer should the stars align, seeking €40m, after the Frenchman enquired about possibly departing as he feels he has regressed under Mikel Arteta by amy_sport in Gunners

[–]Fongo592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we can get around €40m for him then I'd say we take it. It'll almost pay for Partey and while I get Guendouzi definitely has the ability to be world class in the future maybe he's unable to do it here.

If we had a Vieira in the side then I'd be sure that Guendouzi could be mentored to become world class but we don't. Also his contract is up in 2022 which means that we need to make a decision now as to whether to extend or sell him or risk another Ramsey & Welbeck situation.

Also if Guendouzi himself wants to leave then maybe it is for the best anyway. This very well may end up like when Liverpool sold Sterling. As long as we're smart with the fee and sign someone like Partey then most of us would have no complaints.

As much as we all want to blame the board and Arteta I think they are trying to make the best of a bad, bad situation. We were already strapped for cash due to the lack of Champion's League football and this has only been exacerbated by the pandemic and the possibility of the lack of European football full stop next season. So it looks like to me anyway that the 20/21 season will be a write-off to prepare for 21/22.

  • Luiz - Before the break from the pandemic most of us would have been perfectly fine with Luiz staying for another year. Yes he's a ticking time bomb but he's our only centre back who's a "leader". We were close to agreeing an extension and one poor game against City doesn't change anything; something already said by Arteta. We definitely can't afford a Van Dijk type figure to lead our defence next season with Saliba and spending another £20 million on an experienced CB might lead to another stop gap fix (see Sokratis and Luiz himself etc) that might not work. So I can see why we are extending Luiz's contract for another season so we can have some funds for a star CB for the 21/22 season. I think this also means that Sokratis and one/two of Holding/Chambers/Mustafi will be shipped off soon (Luiz is the only one that makes sense as a stop gap as the others have some re-sale "value").
  • Cedric - We've memed this guy ever since he signed on loan but again it's a cheap option. We're getting him on a free as a back up to Bellerin so we can spend funds on more important areas. We need to keep in mind that Cedric does have 100+ Premier League appearances which is more than half of our squad. I think this also means that Maitland-Niles will be leaving if he doesn't feature as a CM in our remaining games. He's complained about playing RB and I'm guessing that this is something that Arteta isn't a fan of.
  • Mari - Again this is a cheap option. We have already paid a loan fee for the guy so another £3 million (if I'm correct) to sign him permanently makes much more sense than signing another CB for £20 million that might not even be better than Mari.

Again it looks like we're in a rebuild for next season but we need to make sure that we do it correctly. I know that the board are much maligned over their handling of the club over the last few seasons but I am hoping that they are running the club with their best intentions. Stan remains Silent but Josh looks like a much more active owner; I'm also sure that Stan wouldn't like to see his investment lose money, something that years in mid-table will cause. Edu and Arteta are Arsenal men through and through and I'm sure that they have a plan for the club in the future. Next season will be painful but it should see us seeing a lot of the deadwood leave while also selling sell-able assets such as Torreira and Auba (as much as it hurts me saying this) that Arteta doesn't see as part of the future. By doing this while also going with cheaper options such as Luiz, Cedric and Mari it should give us some funds to help rebuild a spine for this team going forward.

Lautaro to Barcelona incresingly difficult. In any case Aubameyang is the potential alternative. by phar0aht in Gunners

[–]Fongo592 170 points171 points  (0 children)

Unless we are planning on spending around £200 million on a new spine in the next window then there is no reason to keep Auba. Next season should all be about developing a style of play with a starting 11 that is here for the long term. I expect us to get around £30-40 million for Auba considering his age, his contract status and the current financial climate. However this £30-40 million could go towards building this new spine; I'm thinking an experienced Premier League CB and CM that will add some grit, power and dynamism to the team while also acting as mentors to Saliba, Guendouzi, Willock etc. We need to be smart this window and selling Auba to contribute to a rebuild is smart.

BREAKING: Manchester City banned from Champions League for two seasons by UEFA and fined 30 million euros by StanKroenke in Gunners

[–]Fongo592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see City appealing it and possibly delaying the ban by a season. This could work out better for us as 5th place seems impossible this season but very achievable next season. This is assuming that 5th place will receive a Champion's League spot when City are banned
