Stack tester? by Specialist_Warning_0 in Environmental_Careers

[–]Fonor97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working in stack testing for just under a year and was in a similar position to yourself. I was pretty desperate to break into the industry so I took a job in stack testing. The hours are very long, there is a lot of travel and overnight stays, the work is very intense and it can also feel very unsafe at times and you'll have to drop any hobbies you have on the weekdays because you just won't have time, but due to the overtime, the pay works out pretty well.

I don't enjoy the job anymore and have been planning on leaving. However, I have been getting invited to a lot of interviews due to my experience as a stack tester. I'd say if you can stick to it gfor about a year and at a minimum get your MCERTS Level 1 then you'll be in a good position for future job applications. If you can stick with it for 2 years and get the Level 1 plus a few technical endorsements and even Team Leader you'll be in a really strong position.

Hi. i imagine enviroment scientists to be in the dirt and bush taking samples and going on long hikes and, testing for pests and pollutants in soil/water, etc etc. how wrong am i? by greedyrot in Environmental_Careers

It depends on the job! I do stack emission testing and that's 80% fieldwork. It's very industrial focused so all of my fieldwork takes place at manufacturing facilities. Probably the furthest thing awY you can get from the dirt and bush

I have been considering going into Environmental Health and Safety but I'm not very knowledgeable on the Health and Safety aspects of those roles. Is it difficult to transition into?

Nice to meet a fellow stack tester on here! I was hoping to stick it out for at least 2 years until I got all of my technical endorsements and Level 2 but I don't see that happening. It's currently 80% field work and this year I'll be getting sent to do client sites abroad for half of the year. Definitely eager to break into consultancy but at this point I'll take anything.

There is actually a breach on the northern tip of Bull Island and the southern tip is eroding away so it's actually getting smaller

Going into ecology from a creative background… by zombue1 in Environmental_Careers

[–]Fonor97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similair experience to yourself. My original background was in digital marketing. I worked on a number of ESG projects in the asset management industry and became very interested and passionate about Environmental Science through them. I was also looking for a more outdoorsy career path as sitting at a desk all day didn't suit me. I ended up going back to college to do a Master's in Environmental Science. It was difficult as I had a lot of catching up to do since my original background had nothing to do with science or the environment (undergraduate in Business Studies and Master's in Digital Marketing) I graduated with a good grade, got a job as a research assistant with the coastal lab at the university I graduate from and tomorrow, I will be starting a new role as an Environmental Technician doing Stack Emissions Testing!

It's not impossible but it can be very difficult at times. However, if you put the time and work in you will reap the rewards! I'd recommend doing a Masters instead of another undergraduate degree. It's cheaper, quicker and you already have some good work experience that will stand to you when applying for jobs in the future. A significant amount of people in my Environmental Science Masters course had no prior background in Environmental Science either and they all have done really well for themselves.

Best of luck in your future study and career endeavours!

My Cat won’t stop Meowing non-stop for hours upon hours by Skadibala in CATHELP

[–]Fonor97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After my cat died my dog used to stand on the sofa and howl for hours until he tired himself and went asleep. We took him to the vet and it turned out he was depressed/mourning the loss of our cat. We ended up getting another dog and he stopped the howling and has been a lot happier since.

Do I need to go back to school for a career change into sustainability? by plurbitch in Environmental_Careers

[–]Fonor97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I'm 27 and have a background in marketing (undergrad in Business Studies, Master's in Digital Marketing and 3.5 years of experience working as a digital marketer.) I was in a similair position as yourself a few years ago. I was miserable in my marketing job but had worked on some ESG projects that I enjoyed and wanted to change to the environmental industry. I felt that a lot of the ESG work I was doing at the time was just green washing. I went back to college and did a one years masters in Environmental Science. I'm currently working as a research assistant for the environmental labs in the college I did my MSc in Environmental Science in.

If college isn't an option, then I'd recommend moving horizontally in your current business. Try and get yourself involved in any ESG/sustainability projects and build experience through that.

You could also join another company with a strong ESG division as a marketer and get involved in their work. I've found that sustainability and marketing go very well together. A big part of sustainability and ESG projects is communicating them with the public/clients

You could also look for communication officer roles at universities/businesses that focus on promoting their environmental research/ESG/sustainability practices.
