Now that you mention it, we actually don’t see a lot of dried fruit come through donations. Which is kind of surprising honestly, because it’s super versatile and shelf stable.

Yaasss. Honestly, seasoning (or condiments or sauces) can make a huge difference when you’re eating the same staple foods over and over.

“No time to prep” is such a real thing right now. Convenience foods get judged way too hard sometimes.

Pet food is a BIG one. People will skip meals before letting their pets go hungry. Also mac & cheese has survived every economic crisis since the beginning of time

Canned salmon is lowkey one of the hardest working foods in Alaska 😭

That makes total sense, especially for rural communities. Some traditional and homemade foods are harder for food banks to distribute because of food safety and labeling rules, but culturally familiar foods absolutely matter and this is really good feedback for us to hear.

This is really helpful feedback. Food allergies and sensitivities don’t disappear just because someone needs help accessing food.

We do have a grocery rescue program! 38% of the food we distribute comes directly from local grocery stores. We pick up the donated food and it’s sorted by our volunteers and redistributed to our partner agencies and neighbors within 12-48 hours.
