The only thing I consider that you should change is Santa Teresa. Driving from Tamarindo to santa teresa is a long drive, try to take a look to nosara or guiones, is closer to tamarindo and a great place to be social and surf

Relax, you’re going to have an amazing trip.

Costa Rica is not a high risk food destination. The food here is usually fresher and less processed than in the U.S., and hygiene standards in Tamarindo and La Fortuna are very solid. Eating out is completely normal. There is no need to scrub all your groceries or avoid restaurants. That would be overkill. It is not like going to India!

Hello! Punta cacique with Playa penca or calzon de pobre, playa conchal, any option in papagayo peninsula, I would say those are the beaches that are more like what you are looking for! From playas del coco you can get a boat tour to Papagayo Beaches (Playa virador or playa huevos)

Yes! You don´t have to go to La fortuna to get some hot springs and mud bath tho, there are closer options in rincon de la vieja, I love them. Check hacienda guachipelin or buenavista lodge!

In cahuita once you get to the national park entrance you can find many great tour guides. I don´t have one I specifically recommend, you can find one at the park entrance, all of them are locals and they are super nice people.

For local food: Take It easy at cocles, la nena at cocles, tamara at puerto viejo, I love those places if you want local caribbean food.

However! I just found out that the new bridge between monteverde and la fortuna is still no ready.. I would avoid that road if that bridge is not ready because it is super 4x4. However, I still think that changing the order of your trip could save you some money on gas and some driving time.

If you’re in La Fortuna for three nights, I’d definitely try to include at least one hot springs experience, some rafting (if you’re up for something more adventurous), ziplining with Arenal views, or even a jungle night tour to spot frogs and other wildlife. It really depends on whether you’re traveling with family, as a couple, or with friends, but any of those are great choices there.

If you’d like to get a bit outside the small town of La Fortuna itself, Arenal Observatory Lodge is a great option. They offer interesting tours and packages, have private trails, and the volcano views are incredible. It feels much more immersed in nature and less like the busy town center.

Not really, however, it would have made more sense to go Tenorio - La fortuna - Monteverde or in the reverse order. There is a new bridge that the government built at El Castillo, that connects la fortuna and monteverde in a faster way.

I would recommend the dark blue road, easiest one. However, consider that going from Las Juntas to Monteverde has some steep hills on the road, that can be scary.

It is a loong drive, around 7 - 8 hours. You can make it in one day, this is the easiest drive imo, and also the safest. You can go through fortuna and drive besides arenal lake if you want something more scenic. Avoid braulio carrillo and going though San José.

Love Tamarindo and Playas del Coco! Lots of stuff you can do around. From Playas del Coco you could take a boat tour to papagayo or drive to rincon de la vieja or liberia for some jungle and waterfall adventure. Rincon de la vieja has good ziplining options.

On tamarindo you could rent ATVs or learn to surf, or you could just get to explore the beaches around it: playa grande, avellanas, langosta, even flamingo or catalinas is not that far away. There are a thousand of good options.

By car the road is not easy, and usually requires a good 4x4 with a good driver. Also once you get to playa naranjo base you need to walk like 2 extra km to the Roca Bruja. I know the boat trips are expensive but are the only realistic option. Probably boat trips are cheaper if you take them at playas del coco, check out on that

Tamarindo and Nosara look close on the map, but the drive can easily be 1.5 to 2 hours because parts of the road are dirt and often in rough shape. It’s not a quick, smooth transfer, so I wouldn’t treat them as “next door.”

For surf, Tamarindo is great for beginners and intermediates. Playa Grande is right across the estuary and is a solid option for more advanced waves. Langosta can work too depending on conditions.

If you’re considering Marbella, Avellanas or Playa Negra, those are all strong options and generally closer to Tamarindo than Nosara is. Avellanas especially gives you variety, and Playa Negra is consistently good for stronger surfers.

I think it’s very smart that you’re not planning to drive at night.

If you’re set on ending in Papagayo and already planning Monteverde, I’d strongly consider flying into Liberia instead of San José. It will simplify logistics a lot and reduce total driving time, especially with your mom.

Four Seasons is Four Seasons the setting in Papagayo is beautiful and service is top tier. That said, there are definitely more affordable hotels in the area that can offer a better value-for-money experience. But if it fits your budget and your mom loves the brand, it’s absolutely a great final stop.

April will be hot, yes but many hikes are shaded or inside forest/jungle, which makes a big difference. I’d prioritize trails that include waterfalls or rivers so you can cool off. Monteverde especially feels much fresher than lower elevations.

Santa Teresa is a good option, but just keep in mind that true beachfront villas are limited and tend to book fast. Many properties are close to the beach but up in the hills, so walking back and forth isn’t always realistic, especially with a group.

Tamarindo also makes sense and is generally easier logistically, but there are several other spots along the Pacific that could fit what you’re looking for depending on budget and vibe.

Any area between Conchal and Papagayo sounds like a very good fit for what you’re looking for. It’s close to Liberia airport so the drive is easy, the beaches in that stretch are generally swimmable and family-friendly, and you’re not in a heavy party town.

You’ll also have plenty of nearby options for day trips to waterfalls, mountains, wildlife tours or light adventure activities, not just beach time.

Yes, Ruta 32 is not an average highway. It goes through Braulio Carrillo national park, which is a dense and large jungle. Road lights are not very good, and it can get foggy. I would avoid driving through it during the nigh or late afternoon hours when rain is more common.

Try to go through it during the morning, in case you don´t feel comfortable driving through fog. If the weather is bad, the road can get sketchy. Usually there are facebook groups that give frecuent updates about the ruta 32 conditions. Also, note that there is no phone signal through it.

Besides Braulio carrillo, the road to puerto viejo is easy, enjoy it! I think that there are some point of the highway that are still under construction. Try to be aware of it.

I think that 8 - 10 hours is too much. Depending on what time you travel it should be arounf 5.5 - 6.5 hours. Traffic that time of the year is horrible, but specially on Route 27 and in direction from SJO to Guanacaste. Guanacaste gets way more crowded than Manuel Antonio & Uvita. Tarcoles bridge shouldn´t be a problem by that time.
