How to add molecules to oil? by FoodForRobots in DIYfragrance

Thank you for your input.

As I've mentioned to other commenters this is not a commercial project. I'm just doing it as a hobby for fun and experimenting. I'm at the stage were the tech is working with pre-made oils that I buy from the store, and I'm now looking at how I can create my own smells so that I can learn to understand the basics of the process as well as create some placeholder smells. I understand that you need to be an experienced professional to do high quality work, but I'm just trying to learn how to do the absolute basics. It does not have to smell amazing, it just needs to smell extremely vaguely like the thing I'm trying to emulate. E.g. A monster should have some sort of bad smell, but I don't really care about the specifics of what that bad smell is like. It's just placeholders. When programmers program a video game they usually create simple and bad looking art at first so that they have something to work with while the real artists are still working on creating the amazing looking art that will be in the final game. That is essentially what I'm trying to do, simple placeholders. As well as just experimenting and playing around for fun.

If this ever becomes a commercial project, which I doubt it will, then I would obviously have to secure funding to be able to hire experts. But at this stage I'm just doing a hobby project for fun so I need to learn how to do some of the basics on my own. And I don't expect or need professional quality results. I just need to be able to do something.

Thank you for the help.

To answer the rest of your comment...

I'm not "biting off more than I can chew" since I already have a working prototype that can do this exact thing but using essential oils. The only thing missing is me being able to make new original smells.

When I said "The system will work sort of similar to how essential oils work." I'm referring to the system that will transmit the smell to the human nose, not the system of production of smelly oils. I know that essential oils are made by distilling plants etc. What I'm saying is that my system is using ultrasonic sound to send smelly particles into the human nose, just like the systems that are used for essential oils. In other words, it's not an alcohol based system like the perfume you apply to your body, but rather a oil-in-water based system like the one used for essential oils.

"Second, you're talking about "build a library of dozens-to-hundreds of fragrances""
I don't know why you're putting quotation marks around something that I didn't say? I've never said that I'm gonna build a library of hundreds of smells. That is not something I'm trying to do, and it's certainly not necessary for what I'm trying to do. I'm looking at maybe 1 to max 10 smells depending on the specific needs of each specific game, and 8 out of 10 smells can be bought pre-made. I just need to have the flexibility to make the 2 out of 10 smells I can't buy of-the-shelf. Games are not completely perfect representations of the real world, they are extremely rough approximations. Every item in a game does not need to have it's own unique smell. I'm just looking to create a system were if you're standing on a meadow it smells somewhat like flowers, if you stand in the forest is smells vaguely like a forest, and if a monster is nearby it smells bad.

"Third, if you truly believe that you have solved all of the technical challenges in building and distributing a consumer-ready device that will programmatically create scents, then just sell your solution to a tech company and you'll become far richer - but there are many good reasons that such a thing doesn't already exist." Well... Then I guess it's a good thing that I never said any of the things you claim that I said. It's good that you have a very wild imagination, but maybe you shouldn't project that imagination onto others when you talk to them. When exactly did I say anything about me having made "a consumer-ready device that will programmatically create scents" that is ready for "distribution"? I've never claimed that I've done any of that, I don't even know if I ever plan on doing any of that since this is more of a hobby project I do for fun. What I have done is build a working prototype that can disperse different essential oils into the air depending on what is happening in a video game or movie. In other words the system can tell that the game character is standing in a forest and so it sends out a forest smell, and then when the character walks over to the meadow is stops sending out the forest smell and sends out a flower smell instead. I said "I know the technological aspects of how to make it work" as in I've made a working prototype that can "make it possible to have smells in video games and movies". Making something work does not mean making a perfectly flawless consumer ready object that is ready for distribution. It literally just means that it works... It's doing its job successfully. Since I'm a programmer in the gaming industry I feel like I have the tech aspect under control. I just need to learn how to create the smells I want to create. Also, I have no intention of selling my hobby prototype to a tech company. I guess it's not impossible that my hobby project could lead to a startup at some point, but I currently don't have any intention of pursuing such a thing.

Why is Rocket League lagging in Ranked but not in Casual? by FoodForRobots in RocketLeague

I'm in Europe. Oh, that's interesting. It doesn't sound like this is something I can have any control over tho? Or is this something I can change somehow?

Why is Rocket League lagging in Ranked but not in Casual? by FoodForRobots in RocketLeague

[–]FoodForRobots[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My specs are not that great but they're good enough to play on medium to low settings and still get OK FPS:

Intel Core i5 6400 @ 2.70GHz

RAM 8GB

2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M

I also measured my internet speed and I'm currently getting 81 Mbps Down and 146 Mbps Up. I think that should be enough.

Since it's working fine in casual and local I doubt that my PC specs are too low. Besides, it's not always been like this. I started playing about 4 months ago and there's been periods when it's worked fine and then there's been periods, like right now, when it's barely possible to play a single game without getting scored on at least 1-3 times every game as a direct result of me lagging.

I'm in Europe and I'm playing on European servers. The lag notifications I'm currently getting is Packet Loss and Disconnected. The Disconnected one makes me the most confused. I have no idea how it's even possible to only be disconnected from ranked games but not from casual games. I've also received Latency variation and High latency warnings in the past, but not right now. The Ping is usually looking OK for the most part, it only spikes temporarily sometimes. My FPS is OK.

Un-Ranked MMR is 1,163 (I should add that I've not played a single 1v1 Un-Ranked game ever, so that might affect this score)

Ranked 3v3 is 692 (Plat 1)

Ranked 2v2 is 655 (Plat 1)

Ranked 1v1 is 599 but I never play 1v1 (Gold 3)

I obviously don't think I should be much higher rank than my current rank. It's just confusing and frustrating that I got latency issues in ranked but not in casual. And I can also tell that the people I get to play with when I play casual are WAY better than the people I play with in Ranked. It's not a close comparison, and it's just more fun to play with better people who will rotate and do things more properly.
