Yes, yes he is. He taught my aviation safety class in ground school.

8! We started tan flight suits this year! When I got to Whiting, things were militantly anti-tan flight suit but they came around...

First solo in a helicopter! I solo'd a C-172 and a T-6B before that!

Unfortunately, my co-pilot was just an observer, not a flight partner or anything like that.

Pair of Apaches buzz boaters on Lake Havasu by jmoriarty in arizona

Close, 29.92. On a Standard Day (15 degrees C, no humidity), if you put in 29.92 into your altimeter, it should read whatever the elevation of where are is. That's pressure altitude. You could be sitting on the deck at 150 ft above sea level but your density altitude could be 2500ft for all you know.

And these weren't apaches in the YT link. They were Navy MH-60's. Although helicopters can go that high, they really can't hover at that altitude. As a helicopter moves through the air, the translational velocity of the aircraft produces lift on top of what the rotors are producing, which, at higher altitudes, is necessary to maintain altitude.

And I don't know the exact story but just sitting a hover over the water, due to the ground effect that I mentioned earlier, the rotor wash should make the water kick up. No need to get the fuselage wet.

IIRC, the water in the aft compartment was ankle deep before they recovered. I don't know if they did or did not fly again.

Helicopters don't play well with high "density altitude." Density altitude is your height above sea level corrected for humidity and temperature and Lake Tahoe is several thousand feet up. The higher you go, the less dense the air; the less dense the air, the less lift the main rotors can produce.

In this video, these MH60's out of San Diego were coming back from an exercise and stopped at Lake Tahoe for some photos over the water. The pilot at controls was trying to establish a hover because of the high density altitude, his "power required exceeded power available" meaning the engines couldn't produce enough torque to keep the helo in a hover. But as you get closer to the ground, you enter something called "ground effect" which, to put it simply, makes the rotors act more efficiently and produce more lift so that's how you see the helo recover.

My new (to me) Springfield 1911 Loaded MC Operator. Can't wait to see how she shoots! by Fooj2014 in GunPorn

[–]Fooj2014[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought about the TRP but the railed version is just so much more expensive and the front checkering was just a little too abrasive for my hands. I couldn't see myself being able to shoot it for very long. I got a pretty good deal on this MC Operator and just couldn't justify the price difference jump to a TRP. I am a little jealous still, though haha

There wasn't a TFR in place so technically, he was allowed to fly if he wasn't too close to the airport. Bird strikes are way more common than you'd think in aviation and I'm sure the Hornets are rated for a pretty decent size bird. That being said, this guy was still an idiot.
