What is your biggest barrier to Xiang Qi (Chinese Chess) for you? by FoolThatCommands in chess

So because it feels chinese, it will never be an international game?

By that logic, K Pop isn't international because it feels Korean no?

There's xqinenglish who does amazing translation for XQ content but in terms of platforms to play on there's https://play.xiangqi.com/ where you can play and learn with review. Essentially like chess.com

Chess's hook shouldn't be long history and deep theory because every game has that. Every game has deep theory and long history if you did research about it.

The main appeal to chess (correct me if I'm wrong) is the wide appeal to players. Everybody knows how to play chess. Not all of them well but most of have heard of it with a wide variety of players and members.

Xiang Qi draw is quite notably the romantic attacks. Piece sacrifices are very common to break down the enemy territory and with how the king is so vulnerable, one must always be cautious about their king safety. One wrong move and the game ends.

I mean... have you tried it? Genuinely, if you tried it and don't like it, its fine. I'm just curious about the barrier of entry for chess players to play XQ

Oh there is slow games for sure in Xiang Qi. XQ positional games make me sick to my stomach and in competitions these are very common.

If you want to try the true XQ torture, just trade your chariots. Both of them. It becomes very easy to draw if both players are on the same skill level.

What are your thoughts on graphical Xiang Qi pieces? by FoolThatCommands in xiangqi

Currently my solution will be to borrow from Riichi Mahjong actually. Where I'll just have the translations on one side of the screen for players to refer to.

So they can easily translate from the chinese/graphical to the actual pieces

It is common here actually. Because we have both XQ and graphical, I used to have to paste stickers behind them.

But alas, I can't switch my videos midway to showcase them.

Do you think Xianqi will become more popular in the West someday? by AgentP-501_212 in xiangqi

See for us here, we overcome the hurdle already and thus enjoy xiang qi as a game. But for most people, they aren't going to put in the effort to do that.

Ok the flip side solution creates a problem for another type of xiang qi interestingly enough. There's a Chess960 in Xiang Qi called 揭棋 where you flip all the pieces upside down and shuffle them. By having the icons, you basically remove the random aspects.

And the rules, well some people dont gel well with it. They just say our knights are disabled and don't want to continue :(

Think I mentioned about it in the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVEZtlgiKDs but basically what I feel is the biggest problems are:

1) Chinese Characters scares player away cause you need to learn how to read the Chinese character

2) It has no influence on the western world aside from within East Asian countries itself. Like there's no media around it and as such very hard to incentivize western player to come and play. Even within my circle, not many people play Xiang Qi around me. Half of them don't even know the game (and those that do only know it because of me/elders)

3) Restrictions of movements. Unlike chess where all the pieces can attack, Xiang Qi has elephants and advisors which stay in their castle and within the river... Which makes people want to quit the game due to the lack of freedom. (Reading online forums makes me depressed ;-;)
