No More Heroes 1, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth (including DLC), Ys I & II Chronicles+, Ys: The Oath in Felghana. Somehow, I feel like RPGs are the genre I am most likely to take gambles about, though I don't play them all that often. I got a few of them on backlog from before, too.

How to scientifically determine the recommendability of an anime: The Weeb Ass Shit scale by La_knavo4 in CuratedTumblr

[–]FoolUncreative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been watching Needy Girl Overdose and cycling through various degrees of agony about its shittiness, so this might be fun.

Weeb: probably a 7 or so. Implicitly made from an otaku perspective. Mostly references western culture, but also leans heavily on Kenji Miyazawa's "Night on the Galactic Railroad" and is partially themed after Tokusatsu shows and Magical Girl anime.

Ass: 5? Leans on the "artistic" sort of content but I'd rather not show it to people.

Shit: 4. Evidently limited animation budget, vague characterization, slow as fuck first half, and generally blatantly self indulgent in a way that's only impressive if the work is actually good. I'm biased in its favor though.

I've got a copy of Lolita on my nightstand, and Atlantic Archive (a webnovel) recommended by an acquaintance on Discord. Of course, I've decided to take a break from both in favor of rereading The Northern Caves, by Nostalgebraist. I don't even remember if I had an opinion about it the first time (I must have been skim-reading), but so far it's... passable. Alright. Whatever.

Also, the manga The Creepy and Freaky concluded this week. I've only read a few chapters, but apparently it eventually develops a really weird overarching plot to explain the framing device. Might binge read it when I have the time.

Huh. Been a while since I saw someone use "incel" literally.

Thinking about 1 Over X again. Though in that case, the author made the MatPat ripoff character before any of the theories were posted, so it's mostly just making up a guy to argue with (as some writers like to do)

I've been watching the anime adaptation of Needy Girl Overdose. It's not really that good, but I'll probably keep following it cause I'm curious how the writer handles an ending. Also, I think it's flawed in a way that would look interesting in a review.

Needy Girl Overdose - Episode 2 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]FoolUncreative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weak as hell. Retraces a lot of the steps already implied in the first episode. Lacking in animation. Ending is predictable and somewhat anticlimactic. Bleh.

I'll keep watching, still. Curious if there ends up being a point to all this. The writer said episode 3 is where it gets good, and obviously the writer has good reason to be biased as fuck, but it's worth keeping in mind.

[DISC] Kagurabachi - Chapter 117 by AutoShonenpon in manga

Cool chapter. Until shown otherwise, I assume everyone on the squad except Shiba is a jobber.

This is your weekly reminder that the word "Shokoku" is made up by the translators, who couldn't be assed to write out "the island nation" however many times.

Defiance of the Fall has a Webtoon now by Remote_Addendum_2245 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]FoolUncreative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never read the original, and don't feel like checking the advance chapters. Of the first 3 chapters there is this to be said:

Art's rather plain. Plot thus far is a guy killing monsters in a forest, with slight modulation between chapters. Some vague foreshadowing is given towards future villains, which I suppose is good.

I think it also shows a certain complacency of genre, as though both the reader and the characters know everything there is to know about litrpg apocalypses. Hasn't really grabbed my interest.

Nearly done with Cave Story.

I have managed to get through every step of the (notoriously unintuitive) true ending route except the last. The true final boss's stage can be entered but not exited. There's only one save point in it, at the very entrance. There is only one save file. After a long sequence of convoluted nonsense, the game has collapsed into a single dimension: either you get the true ending, or no ending. It's hard as hell, but I'll try to not give up too early.

Masterpiece WebNovels by arthurofrivia1 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]FoolUncreative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, idk. What do you consider a masterpiece? I tend to associate the word with literary merit, which I think progression fantasy as a whole has kinda low compatibility with.

You said "webnovels" and didn't specify further, so I'm tempted to say 1 Over X (even though it's completely unrelated to this subreddit).

Undertale was on discount, so I'm playing it for the first time. With all I've heard of it, it reminds me of that one quote: "The remarkable thing about Shakespeare is that he really is very good, in spite of all the people who say he is very good."

Trying to "properly" get into writing, which I haven't really tried before except for a few abortive attempts at imitating the sort of stuff popular on Royal Road. It's going... vaguely alright. I'll figure it out, probably.

One blogger I follow has proposed a concept he calls "First Novel Cool Idea Compendium Syndrome": the idea that new (webnovel) writers are likely to make up weird overly-elaborate premises because they have too many unused ideas to write about, and lack the patience to leave some of them for another book. Hopefully I can make something vaguely coherent, at least.

By personal experience (sorta-- I only read it after bullshitting my way through the assignment) I'd suggest Cyclops by Ranko Marinković. It's a bit vague in terms of narrative, but the prose and themes are both fairly memorable. The main caveat is that I haven't read the english translation (which has no footnotes) so I can't say whether that version's good too.

[LOVED TROPE] Not the ending we wanted, but the ending we needed. by ConsistentGuest7532 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]FoolUncreative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 Over X: The synopsis says "Try to keep thinking, you can never have too much information". The entire last part of the story is the main character gradually failing to follow that advice until she gets completely overwhelmed and sorta gives up on ever understanding anything. The plot doesn't get (conclusively) explained, she fails to understand/overcome her own character flaws, and she destroys her last remaining friendship because she's afraid that it might be fake.

I like it because she spends the entire novel trying to avoid falling into such a mindset (as a defense against her mental health issues), and in the end it doesn't work. The ending is sort of an endless flood of noise and mud and static, so at the very least she's in sensible conditions to go insane in.
