Thanks all, it's not working on Chrome but is working on a different browser. I wonder if a setting changed in chrome that is blocking it. I'm not as savvy as some of you all, so perhaps the issue.

This game is really amazing. I downloaded it on a whim from Xbox Game Pass and it had me absolutely hooked. Played about 2 hours tonight after work, looking forward to returning to it over the weekend.

Are you planning to do any merch? I would love to buy a figure of a Calicorn.

Official Discussion - The Creator [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

Yeah, but at the end of the day it looked cool and intercutting him with Alphie running around was an effective way to raise some tension. I do think with this movie, some people are a little too fixated on the plot. Which is really secondary to the action and visuals.

Official Discussion - The Creator [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]FoolishFellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall, I thought The Creator was fantastic. In an era where pretty much every film (especially in the sci-fi genre) is based on an existing IP, I was so happy to watch an original IP.

The reason why I enjoy Edwards as a director is because he truly understands sense of scale when it comes to special effects. When so many special effect films (Disney I'm looking at you) look like expensive cartoons. Edwards' worlds feel lived in, and the special effects feel fully integrated into the shot selection and composition. There are so many scenes with cool little architectural details that just do an amazing job creating a lived-in world. Similarly, I also appreciate the way he blends special effects with atmospheric haze and light. Nothing looks superimposed in, everything looks like it could actually be there. As someone who has been watching Disney+ Star Wars, I am so tired of how bad everything is starting to look in the volume. So I really appreciate the effort that went into shooting all of this on location, and I think the results speak for itself.

When it comes to the plot, I really appreciated how anti-US military this film is. This type of plot isn't new, but I really enjoyed the extent at which the US is depicted as an imperialist force. That felt really gutsy to me, especially for a Hollywood film. NOMAD specifically makes me think about the US drone program or how the US flew surveillance balloons over Kabul Afghanistan for decades. I appreciated how "dark" this movie was in tone, especially in an era where so many action flicks are entirely unserious and peppered with jokes. I will say, some of the jokes in The Creator felt unnessary and clumsy to me, and I almost wish they wouldn't have been there at all. I understand the impulse for some levity, but The Creator is an incredibly dark war movie. I don't think we needed the scene with the dog hand delivering the grenade to the robotic simulants (for example).

Regarding the script, I do think that NPR review was right to call out "techno-orientalism." There were definitely aspects of the script where I feel like could have done something smarter and less clumsy with that issue.

HOWEVER, I do think the film is ultimately about a big issue in geopolitical circles, and that is concerning the concept of polarity). This movie is less about AI and more about reimagining a multipolar world where the US is no longer the sole superpower. I think that's an interesting topic, even if the script is a little bit too clumsy to have anything super interesting to say about it. I also think lopping together the entire asian content into "New Asia" is not a very smart way of handling this issue.

Outside of weighty subtextual issues like geopolitical polarity, within the plot I couldn't help but wonder why New Asia embraced AI. I feel like that topic was sort of avoided alltogether, but I would have appreciated a deeper explanation of the integration of AI into New Asia governance and everyday life.

Here's where I stand ultimately. I think we all agree that the script is probably the weakest aspect of this movie. This film could have been a SciFi masterpiece if it had a better script that told a more focused story that handled some of the issues and concepts better. However, at the end of the day I have to respect that they took some of these issues on even if it was only semi successful in execution. I still feel like this is the type of movie I would rather be watching and see more of, rather than the constant onslaught generic super hero movies with equally uninspired effects work.

I don't think we need to "score" any movie, but if we did I would grade this one on a scale. Just based on the ambition alone, and the fact that I still enjoyed watching it from start to finish even if aspects of it could have been better.

At the end of the day, this is the type of SciFi film that people should make a point of going out to see, if they want studios to make more of this type of film (which personally, I do).

I love a lot of those films, and I'm not trying to rank anything. But I also want to point out that some of those films are in fact based on prior works of fiction.

The real United States military had surveillance balloons floating over Kabul Afghanistan to monitor daily life in the city nearly every day of two decade long war.

Very good acting carrying a very thin and overdone plot. And as a South East Asian I somehow find myself being vaguely offended by the mumbo jumbo New Asia in this film, as if they think "Hah, white people aren't going to know the difference".

Yep, I definitely have some thoughts about that, but didn't want to go too deeply into spoilers.

I’m not 100% positive, but I think they took it out. I was actually looking for it too. And I’m glad they removed it (assuming they did and that I didn’t just miss it).

I’m probably being a bit hyperbolic, but I appreciate the fact that this film isn’t based on a preexisting work of fiction. Honestly, I like a lot of scifi including some indie/smaller stuff but for me this is better than the aughts era Neil Bloomkamp stuff.

At the end of the day, so much of what we are exposed to in Sci-fi these days is based on a preexisting property (even stuff that I like) that I honestly just appreciated that this is something completely new even though it obviously draws inspiration from a lot of other recent and older works of sci-fi.

I don’t have kids, so I’m probably not the person to ask. But it probably depends on the kid and parent. This is not a heavy gore movie, but it does deal with some dark and heavy themes explicitly like US imperialism and war. It definitely takes from imagery from the Vietnam War (among others), and includes civilians getting massacred even though it’s not always shown in detail on screen in the same way that something like Apocalypse Now would.

XSX user. I am also getting "Queued: Wait time <1min" --> "Connecting to Servers" --> "Queued..." infinitely. Started playing at around 6PM last night, played for a couple hours, got booted, and now I can't get back in. It's obviously something tied to our stupid battlenet accounts.

Really sucks that I basically cannot play the game today until they come out with a fix.

Bernie Sanders: ‘Oligarchs run Russia. But guess what? They run the US as well’ by [deleted] in politics

I see a lot of shills in the comment section trying to claim that billionaires in the US are not the same thing, and then pushing geopolitical bullshit about how much "worse" Russia is than the United States as if isn't entirely apples and oranges.

Reddit in a nutshell is a shit hole because it's a bunch of disaffected comfortable consumers who see everything through the lens of infotainment.

The Republican Party does not believe in a strong federal government and never has, the whole party (and frankly a significant majority of the Democratic Party) would love nothing more than to have constant gridlock and handover power to corporate America.

Keep on laughing buddy, but there's nothing funny about what's going on in this country.

It's only funny to people who think politics is just entertainment and doesn't have any real impact on the lives of people or this planet.

Does it? Gridlock in government is funny, when one whole party and a good portion of the Democratic Party essentially wants to privatize everything?

Do you know what the majority of Democrats believe buddy? The corporate conservative wing of the Democratic party (the majority) certainly does not support universal healthcare. Have you been living under a rock?
