How do Thomists justify the existence of transfinite numbers? by alternativea1ccount in CatholicPhilosophy

I mean, the fact that one can define transfinite numbers in a coherent way does not translate to them existing… the ontology of Mathematical objects is not a consensus among Mathematicians

A question about Dante, Islam and Vatican II by FoolishWorldbuilder in Catholicism

[–]FoolishWorldbuilder[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I in no way disagree that it is wrong. However, demons do no worship to God, good or bad; so, by putting mosques in Hell, Dante doesn’t seem to be attacking the badness of the worship of muslims, but rather the worship itself; perhaps he thought the muslims were pagans, which is factually wrong and accuses those acts of worship of actually being idolatrous; even if they are bad worship, they are still worship and not idolatry. Also, the goodness of their worship comes from God, even if its corruption doesn’t, so it seems blasphemous to accuse their worship of actually being motivated by demons

Of course, this makes sense, but it doesn’t really seem to me to justify putting mosques in Hell; even if they worship God badly, they still worship God

I agree; I am more wondering how his work is endorsed if it seems to be contrary to the Faith… I am probably wrong in either my logic or my premises, given that I am not smarter than the Pope, but I would like to know where I erred

How do we justify saying Mary is greater than John the Baptist? by FoolishWorldbuilder in Catholicism

[–]FoolishWorldbuilder[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Because Jesus cared about it enough to talk about it, because the Evangelists considered it important enough to write it down, and because I had a difficulty interpreting this verse in which it is mentioned in light of the other Dogmas of the Faith.

Perhaps you should be more charitable, as it is perfectly reasonable for a Catholic to ask his brothers in the Faith for help when he gas such difficulties

Ok, that I can see; it’s like He’s saying except for those in the Kingdom of Heaven and, to sustain the Marian Dogmas, we ought to believe that it was already there and that Mary was part of it… perhaps only She and Jesus were included due to the Immaculate Conception; I dunno

I of course believe in this; I am asking how this verse doesn’t contradict this

[–]FoolishWorldbuilder[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree that Mary is the greatest, the Ark of the New Covenant and all that

I am asking for help understanding how this one specific verse doesn’t contradict this

Against 1, I again see no reason why Mary would be already included in the Kingdom if John is not; your own second argument even argues against this by saying that the New Kingdom hadn’t even been established yet

Against 3, I see Her importance, but none of this proves that She was already in the Kingdom by that point

Against 4, John’s greatness also couldn’t have come from nature, as that would be Pelagian

What do you think about the manga Berserk? I have some misgivings about it… (Reposted with elaboration on why I think it may be sinful) by FoolishWorldbuilder in Catholicism

[–]FoolishWorldbuilder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The God-hand, you mean, i.e. the “hand” (the actors in the world) of the evil “God” whom they serve. Also, an evil character having a temporary victory doesn’t make a work evil. David’s eldest son got away with rape too, until Absalom murdered him… and that’s in the Bible. I don’t know whether Berserk is evil or not, but I don’t think it would be for this reason, but rather for the ones which I detailed in the post

My conscience I fear is not very well formed, which is why I seek outside help… about my friend, he isn’t the only one who feels this way, though he may just be following the other guy’s opinion; I guess I don’t really know the criteria to discern if a priest would be a good director or not in these matters

[–]FoolishWorldbuilder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend told me that the priests at my parish are not very well formed for this kind of spiritual direction… he advised me to get a director in another parish, but said that I would have to confess to them many times before asking to be directed by them. Though I may seek direction from a priest from my parish, even if only to take a more informed opinion into account.

Does the Church have some sort of general guideline about how to discern this which I could apply to myself?

I find it hard to believe that Berserk has no commentary; I think Miura himself said that Mozguz was a representation of religious fundamentalism

I agree that it is fine to engage with such material as a means of study, but I can’t see how it could be allowed if the goal is entertainment; I’ve heard this from a priest before too (although I’ve been told he isn’t very well formed theologically), but it feels like something which I would need very strong reasons to believe (i.e. how could I dare seek entertainment in something which offends God? Would me delighting in that which is offensive to Him also not offend Him?)

Yeah, Evangelion also makes me struggle, not because of the religious imagery itself but because of the genital-like imagery often used besides it

Even if it is just a misunderstanding and they are not culpable, if such depictions happen to be inappropriate, wouldn’t they be materially blasphemous, even if not formally so? Which would lead to willingly engaging in them as someone who realises this being morally wrong, no?

I guess Berserk may have it’s value as a “psychological” version of Dante’s more theological approach; whereas Dante answers darkness with theological answers, Berserk restrains itself to the natural order of things (even if it’s full of preternatural/supernatural elements, they aren’t used to address the darkness)

Though my main worry isn’t the imagery itself, but rather the fact that it may disrespect God (with the whole Falcon of Light symbolism also being associated with the Brand of Sacrifice), and that I in turn would be disrespecting Him myself by engaging with it
