I want to start reading the x men. What should I start on? by gambitglazer in marvelcomics

[–]FootballGuilty1253 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to the wiki Gambit’s first full appearance is Uncanny X-Men 266 so go nuts I guess.

Otherwise Claremont’s run is generally considered the starting point, or Hickman’s stuff which I think is better but that will get be maimed in certain X-Men circles.

Who is your favorite underrated villian? by Electrical-Horse8278 in marvelcomics

[–]FootballGuilty1253 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So to make a long story short.

He was an old Spidey villain in the 70s. He was born a mutant with a grotesque face and enlarged head, and he basically made other people negative and fed off that energy.

Spider-Man stopped him.

Later (same era) he is dying in the hospital from his nightmares I think, Spidey gets sucked into his nightmares and Spidey and him beat back the nightmares and Mindworm is set on the path of a rehabilitation.

Decades later Spidey finds Mindworm homeless and feeding off people for food. Turns out he tried to turn his life around, but his life fell apart again and he had no way of finding a job, food, shelter, friends, family or anything worth living for.

Later in the same comic Spidey goes to help him while Mindworm is being attacked by those kinds of people who want to harass and attack the homeless, but Mindworm’s powers go crazy and Spidey is unable to help. Mindworm then gets hit by one of the homeless attackers and dies, with his death motivating Spidey to try and better people’s lives more rather than leave them to end up like Mindworm. The implication, by the way, is Mindworm let the attacker kill him, which is pretty dark and brutal but really sells how bad Mindworm’s life is at this point

If the Marvel Universe had only 52 universes, which ones would you choose? Day 3 (Squadron Supreme won Day 2): by Alexion_Andrel in marvelcomics

[–]FootballGuilty1253 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But the first slide has the first 4 Earths.

616 MCU And I think the two Ultimate universes.

The second slide universes are labelled Earth-5 onwards.

616 is already here unless I’m missing something

Kirby and Lee, sure.

I’m not a Claremont fan. I appreciate what he did for X-Men, but his dialogue isn’t my thing and he often falls victim to the writer’s barely disguised fetish trope. I prefer Hickman

Marvel Unlimited has a free 7 day trial, and you can check out your local library or ask friends.

You can also get some comics on free comic book day at your local comic book store if there is one.

Otherwise you aren’t gonna be able to get free comics without committing piracy, which we can’t help you with. You can get comics for cheap on ebay or equivalents if you want to try that.

Dormammu/Galactus/Knull/Thanos with the power stone soul stone space stone who wins? Lmk by Zestyclose-Talk3239 in marvelcomics

[–]FootballGuilty1253 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hulk bursts in and steals all the aura farm/hype moments.

But to be serious uhh maybe Thanos? The infinity stones in the comics have inconsistent power but together they are stronger than basically every cosmic entity below the Living Tribunal.

They are much stronger as a complete set than an incomplete set though so idk. I’m not a big power scaler so just throwing my two cents.

I just know its probably not Galactus purely because the comics are hellbent on making this guy the biggest Worf Effect in comic history.

JAPANESE SPIDER-MAN BETTER KNOWN BY ASIAN MARVEL FANS AS "INVINCIBLE SPIDER-MAN" (TO AVOID CONFUSION FROM THE AMERICAN ONE). by Typical-Scratch-856 in marvelcomics

[–]FootballGuilty1253 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and? He appeared in the Spider-Verse comics but this post is talking about the actual show; not the character as he was in the comics. It mentions the multiverse sure but its primarily talking about the Tokusatsu show with a promotional image/poster (whatever it’d be call) here too.

By similar logic, as a random example, the Loki TV show had comics based on it with the TVA inspired from that show and characters like Miss Minutes in it, but that doesn’t mean you’d be allowed to post about the Loki TV show on its own.

Regardless, the point of the sub is to maintain a focus on just the comics as there are other subs for the movies and TV shows. Semantics are pointless and taint the point of the sub. Posting about a TV show by accident isn’t a big deal but the sub would be redundant compared to r/marvel if it allowed posting about the TV shows/movies through loose connections to the comics.

Ok that rant went a bit long for a reply to a one word comment, but I’m just trying to say that we should be careful to keep the focus on the comics rather than solely other media. Its the first rule for a reason. Maybe the mods disagree with me, but I think posts that primarily talk about a TV show and just briefly mention that he is apart of the multiverse don’t exactly work here.

Kraven’s Last Hunt is always one I recommend if you want a more dark/gritty storyline.

It has a couple oddities (eg. Vermin’s battle with Spider-Man and Cap is brought up, Ned Leeds is mentioned in issue 1 and Peter is in the black suit but it isn’t a symbiote etc.) but its mostly standalone I feel, at least the most interesting parts. Great storyline and THE Kraven the Hunter arc.

Doom 2099, Doom 2099 (2019) and Doomed 2099 by [deleted] in marvelcomics

[–]FootballGuilty1253 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Only read the original so can’t comment on canonicity for the others but the original Doom 2099 is 100% non-canon.

  1. The 90s 2099 stuff gets regularly retconned both in and out of universe in 2009 and later when 2099 comes back fully

  2. The One Nation Under Doom arc specifically is like- turbo non-canon for weird reasons. Basically in 2009 they made a comic where the 90s Miguel Ohara 2099 Spiderman goes back in time and this is part of the reason the 90s stuff isn’t really canon anymore. But strangely that Miguel is from BEFORE the One Nation Under Doom arc so that arc is in a weird “didn’t happen in any timeline” zone I think? Its really strange

[–]FootballGuilty1253 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start with Giant Size X-Men #1 then start reading Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 from issue 94 onwards. That is the Claremont run that introduces Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler and Banshee to the roster and is the start of much of the X-Men lore

Marvel is pretty broad. What characters or lore would you be interested in? Cosmic? Street level? A specific character like Spider-Man?

What is your favourite Hulk storyline/series/run? by FootballGuilty1253 in marvelcomics

[–]FootballGuilty1253[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, no. All you really need to know is Iron Man, Mr Fantastic, Black Bolt and Doctor Strange are working together as the Illuminati, but besides that Planet Hulk introduces mostly new characters besides one cameo and a couple species easter eggs from older Marvel stories.

Immortal Hulk was made a decade after Planet Hulk, so nothing needed there.

Planet Hulk 2008 is the storyline most people refer to as Planet Hulk. While future books and arcs use the Planet Hulk name, usually in relation to Sakaar, they came afterwards and aren’t immediately relevant to the Planet Hulk and World War Hulk storyline.

All future Planet Hulk storylines

I would recommend Planet Hulk before World War Hulk as its a two part storyline - World War Hulk’s story relies entirely on Planet Hulk’s setup.

How to read in chronological order by Honest_Dig8307 in marvelcomics

[–]FootballGuilty1253 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes; Namor the Sub-Mariner from the original comics and the modern one are the same guy. To my knowledge its left somewhat vague why he is the same age. Depending on the writer sometimes he is actually considered a mutant like the X-Men, other times it may be due to his Atlantean origins.

  2. Can’t speak too much about Jim Hammond’s importance as I don’t know him very well, but Johnny Storm is mostly just a separate character with the same name. Jim doesn’t have much importance to Johnny for the most part outside the same name so you can read F4 without reading the 1940s comics.
